README

This distribution contains the November 30, 1991 port of MATLAB for
the NeXT. This port was completed by Jeff Burns from the May 25, 1982
version of MATLAB which has been running for several years on IBM PC's
at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

No warranty of any kind is provided for MATLAB by Jeff Burns or
anyone else!

INSTALLATION:

The suggested way of installing MATLAB is to put the file "matlab"
in "/usr/local/bin" and the file "matlab.hlp" in "/usr/local/lib." It
may also be desirable to edit the help file to include the location of
the MATLAB User' Guide. Of course, the executable file "matlab" can
reside almost anywhere on the file system, but the help file
"matlab.hlp" must reside either in the current directory or in
/usr/local/lib. If either of these places is not acceptable it will
be necessary to change line 32 of sys.f and recompile.

COMPILATION:

The executable file "matlab" provided in this release was compiled
using f2c from AT&T Bell Laboratories. The Makefile in the source
directory assumes the use of f2c.

SUGGESTIONS:

My intention in undertaking this port of MATLAB to the NeXT has
been to provide the features available in the May 25, 1982 version of
MATLAB to NeXT users. No attempt has been made to extend the basic
capabilities of this version of MATLAB. If anyone has any suggestions
about how to enhance the way this version of MATLAB runs on NeXT
computers please send them to me. Also, I suspect that someone else has
ported MATLAB to a UNIX machine before. If anyone knows of a newer,
or better, version of MATLAB that is still in the public domain please
let me know, and I will try to get it running on the NeXT. I am
especially interested in finding code that alleviates the inability of
this version to use mixed case file names.

As a final note, if you are a serious user of MATLAB why not write
a letter to the publisher of MatLab Pro asking them to release a
version for the NeXT. Their address is
