WWW site ============================ http://www.next.com comp.sys.next.* newsgroups ========================== news:comp.sys.next.advocacy This is the "why NEXTSTEP is better (or worse) than anything else in the known universe" forum. It was created specifically to divert lengthy flame wars from .misc. news:comp.sys.next.announce Announcements of general interest to the NeXT community (new products, FTP submissions, user group meetings, commercial announcements etc.) This is a moderated newsgroup, meaning that you can't post to it directly. Submissions should be e-mailed to next-announce@digifix.com where the moderator (Scott Anguish) will screen them for suitability. Archives are available by ftp at ftp://ftp.stepwise.com/pub/Next_Announce_Archives Messages posted to announce should NOT be posted or crossposted to any other comp.sys.next groups. news:comp.sys.next.bugs A place to report verifiable bugs in NeXT-supplied software. Material e-mailed to Bug_NeXT@NeXT.COM is not published, so this is a place for the net community find out about problems when they're discovered. This newsgroup has a very poor signal/noise ratio--all too often bozos post stuff here that really belongs someplace else. It rarely makes sense to crosspost between this and other c.s.n.* newsgroups, but individual reports may be germane to certain non-NeXT- specific groups as well. news:comp.sys.next.hardware Discussions about NeXT-label hardware and compatible peripherals, and non-NeXT-produced hardware (e.g. Intel) that is compatible with NEXTSTEP. In most cases, questions about Intel hardware are better asked in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware. Questions about SCSI devices belong in comp.periphs.scsi. This isn't the place to buy or sell used NeXTs--that's what .marketplace is for. news:comp.sys.next.marketplace NeXT stuff for sale/wanted. Material posted here must not be crossposted to any other c.s.n.* newsgroup, but may be crossposted to misc.forsale.computers.workstation or appropriate regional newsgroups. news:comp.sys.next.misc For stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else. Anything you post here by definition doesn't belong anywhere else in c.s.n.*--i.e. no crossposting!!! news:comp.sys.next.programmer Questions and discussions of interest to NEXTSTEP programmers. This is primarily a forum for advanced technical material. Generic UNIX questions belong elsewhere (comp.unix.questions), although specific questions about NeXT's implementation or porting issues are appropriate here. Note that there are several other more "horizontal" newsgroups (comp.lang.objective-c, comp.lang.postscript, comp.os.mach, comp.protocols.tcp-ip, etc.) that may also be of interest. news:comp.sys.next.software This is a place to talk about [third party] software products that run on NEXTSTEP systems. news:comp.sys.next.sysadmin Stuff relating to NeXT system administration issues; in rare cases this will spill over into .programmer or .software. Related Newsgroups ================== news:comp.soft-sys.nextstep Like comp.sys.next.software and comp.sys.next.misc combined. Exists because NeXT is a software-only company now, and comp.soft-sys is for discussion of software systems with scope similar to NEXTSTEP. news:comp.lang.objective-c Technical talk about the Objective-C language. Implemetations discussed include NeXT, Gnu, Stepstone, etc. news:comp.object Technical talk about OOP in general. Lots of C++ discussion, but NeXT and Objective-C get quite a bit of attention. At times gets almost philosophical about objects, but then again OOP allows one to be a programmer/philosopher. (The original comp.sys.next no longer exists--do not attempt to post to it.) Exception to the crossposting restrictions: announcements of usenet RFDs or CFVs, when made by the news.announce.newgroups moderator, may be simultaneously crossposted to all c.s.n.* newsgroups. This system allows you to request online technical documents, drivers, and other software, which are then sent to you automatically. You can request documents by fax or Internet electronic mail, read them on the world-wide web, transfer them by anonymous ftp, or download them from the BBS. NeXTanswers is an automated retrieval system. Requests sent to it are answered electronically, and are not read or handled by a human being. NeXTanswers does not answer your questions or forward your requests. USING NEXTANSWERS BY E-MAIL To use NeXTanswers by Internet e-mail, send requests to nextanswers@next.com. Files are sent as NeXTmail attachments by default; you can request they be sent as ASCII text files instead. To request a file, include that file's ID number in the Subject line or the body of the message. You can request several files in a single message. You can also include commands in the Subject line or the body of the message. These commands affect the way that files you request are sent: ASCII causes the requested files to be sent as ASCII text SPLIT splits large files into 95KB chunks, using the MIME Message/Partial specification REPLY-TO address sets the e-mail address NeXTanswers uses These commands return information about the NeXTanswers system: HELP returns this help file INDEX returns the list of all available files INDEX BY DATE returns the list of files, sorted newest to oldest SEARCH keywords lists all files that contain all the keywords you list (ignoring capitalization) For example, a message with the following Subject line requests three files: Subject: 2101 2234 1109 A message with this body requests the same three files be sent as ASCII text files: 2101 2234 1109 ascii This message requests two lists of files, one for each search: Subject: SEARCH Dell SCSI SEARCH NetInfo domain NeXTanswers will reply to the address in your From: line. To use a different address either set your Reply-To: line, or use the NeXTanswers command REPLY-TO <your-address> If you have any problem with the system or suggestions for improvement, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY FAX To use NeXTanswers by fax, call (415) 780-3990 from a touch-tone phone and follow the instructions. You'll be asked for your fax number, a number to identify your fax (like your phone extension or office number), and the ID numbers of the files you want. You can also request a list of available files. When you finish entering the file numbers, end the call and the files will be faxed to you. If you have problems using this fax system, please call Technical Support at 1-800-848-6398. You cannot use the fax system outside the U.S & Canada. USING NEXTANSWERS VIA THE WORLD-WIDE WEB To use NeXTanswers via the Internet World-Wide Web connect to NeXT's web server at URL http://www.next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY ANONYMOUS FTP To use NeXTanswers by Internet anonymous FTP, connect to FTP.NEXT.COM and read the help file pub/NeXTanswers/README. If you have problems using this, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY MODEM To use NeXTanswers via modem call the NeXTanswers BBS at (415) 780-2965. Log in as the user "guest", and enter the Files section. From there you can download NeXTanswers documents. FOR MORE HELP... If you need technical support for NEXTSTEP beyond the information available from NeXTanswers, call the Support Hotline at 1-800-955-NeXT (outside the U.S. call +1-415-424-8500) to speak to a NEXTSTEP Technical Support Technician. If your site has a NeXT support contract, your site's support contact must make this call to the hotline. Otherwise, hotline support is on a pay-per-call basis. Thanks for using NeXTanswers! Generally I think I've decided I want to reply in plain text -- particularly as I've found a number of people unable to read NeXT's MIME -- so I often find myself clicking that button. The easy solution would be to reset Preferences, which I think I'll do... Best wishes, mmalc. --

Under heavy network load, the machine completely freezes. CPU and DISK load don't seem to matter (though, admittedly, I didn't go to great lengths to try and produce network load without disk load-- but considering that I can do three simultaneous quad-fat links of a large app, disk I/O is not a problem).... but as soon as I peg out the network load, the machine locks up after anywhere from 10 seconds to a couple of minutes of load. No kernel messages. No warning. No other symptoms. Machine is on a UPS-- incoming power is clean. CPU has a fun and runs cool. Machine is well-ventilated and the operating environment is good. Have tried with the CogentEM960 driver AND the DECChip21040 driver-- tried with all versions of each. Interestingly, it seems that the machine remains stable for slightly longer using what appears to be the slightly less effecient (it is older-- not as many optimizations?) CogentEM960 driver. As long as I don't peg out network load, machine remains 100% stable. anyone have a clue? thanks, b.bum

From: ians@cam-ani.co.uk (Ian Stephenson) Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.software,comp.sys.next.bugs Subject: C++ in 4.0: It's here, and it still doesn't work Date: Fri, 2 Aug 1996 11:25:52 GMT Organization: Cambridge Animation Systems Ltd Sender: news@cam-ani.co.uk Message-ID: <DvID36.ErJ@cam-ani.co.uk> There is a SERIOUS bug in the 4.0 C++ compiler on MachOS [intel - I haven't tested platforms] (I shall leave aside that ObjC++ doesn't work AT ALL on NT). Enclosed is a simple test app which demonstrates the problem. Basically if you have a derived class with an empty contructor function then it's vptr table is not initialised, so a call to a virtual member function will crash the app. While it sounds trivial, any moderatly sized body of C++ code will include MANY funcitons which meet the criteria - in fact the funtion does't have to be empty, but just small enough to be considered trivial. NeXT have known about this bug for at least two months. But have told me that they have no intention of releasing a fix to anyone except premium support customers. There are a number of known workarounds - a printf in the contructor will avoid the problem, but redirecting stdout to dev/null is hardly professional. Recommended workaround: Don't upgrade to 4.0 if you need C++ funcitonality. (I could go on to mention that it crashed once while installing 4.0 user, and twice while installind developer) $an begin 644 test.compressed M'YV0=,K,H?,"@,&#"!,J7,BPH<.'$",B!$$#QHT:-4````%"AHP9,31R'`E# MY,B3'$N"L"$#!HP9-F*XG,%19@P;-3;FE,BSI\^?0.L,#".'(X`T8=S,`=KP M#IHR9=@PG4JUJM6K6+-2#3CP19,P:\J82<.FC-:S:&7"L$&#ADF/($V2E(M2 MQ@V:*V/<C3&C(@T;-?5ZW`@#K>'#"X72(6H4J5*M3J%*14RYLN7+E,74.0-" M!X@V8=*X<?'F<QXB9>2DL5.&S!`V8>;,(6U:2.PRKV//?J,@P9@Q*U:`:%%: M,V?0HFFW.9UZ=>O<LI7GL3T'-^SHO!4H<#&EBA$C2;`4F:)C>_?OX<?KH.WB M-P@7:-ZW>4_F/9PY=]Z/><_F/9[W>>@WQAS\N>="'K]IU]X8I)7GVWXM[$>" M"@LJ@-F%&&:HX88<8L850<B-]EN'&ZK%EEL;=?112"G.U6)=,7$4$TLUK"4# M2X'5P!=A)/:8V%!%:>384EE%%I6/2":I)$0CB#8&&W60408((BR'FFJLN7;= M;&B(H%V(**2@P!X*6-E<EM`1J`(>;.Z@`!QUT#$'"B(,(4<98=`AVADBI.`F MF__U`((;9>1G)I;/;>DFG'+2.488;+"QIVE6&%&'&V/T^2>;+?BP7*67CA'F MHG'.*0)J9>GI!I]^*B!EJE,"ZJ8"?5BXY*VXYJKKK@M]^,)RU%FGVX*\5F5B M6V^M2!<();UXD@PURG@3M&O1$(,,-=EU0V',%INA8HP)F1216!DYF;?HIGM5 MDYA"*265P-Z6)GQ>ECF=O%OJH$.\U:499F]D)L"HJ5S0P:^PLNE[<)J:]E9K M`@K8D88<=-0!:6WXZJ9P'J!B^F\"`0],9\$+Y[LOQY9BVG`"M:KK\LLPQPR4 MKR4/BX;,$AV+(D=PL8A2LRB-)!->,U)+PT4J76O###+PB#-:X`9YU+B0/77D MTUC+_*1N&/>[Y9B]P2F&I&,X6+-LH_8F,<46]_=IRJ*VVL<.6==M]]UXWTTS M<XAJ.>R(>>N<;%S.`ATT"#!EM%)++]E@$5LUS:`CMX7E3574C5%=I-7G6NYY MDNP^&>645?+MG-_1=?FEZ6B:?.CI_HH)<F\OO%`%IF^TT489;M`!`AVEF?%& MI&_<,2D3HI7!`@A)U4<'&GL2:'RD(-SQAAQKA$#["R*+0#+KB6I\\I6P;[GR MPQ%/7/'%K[<N_MNA?AQRJ2,;##[J<VS<<::MLFSKYP`,X%8$`J+[S>MFEA-< MBGJV+,,%[28AR0N-8%`C&+@%!'R9P0QNX#0!\@1SXGK,YB3CP1)F*'3N(MW9 MN%2OK<G&-.1SWPL]LT*P":P.8TM#V7K3OO"AK7]K6Y_;4!8_N='-A$A,HA*7 MR,0F.O&)4(RB%*=(Q2I:\8I8S*(6M\C%+GKQBV`,HQC'2,8RFO&,:$RC&M?( #QH<` ` end

I suspect # that you are probably running out of kernel memory. Try running # vmstat (there is some option that prints amount of free memory # every so many seconds). If I am correct you would see the available # free memory go down to very small amount. # # I am surprised that you find the original Cogent driver to be # more stable. Probably you are transmitting much more data than # receiving. That driver had a serious flaw. It is Patchlevel 1... It turns out that the Network driver must be initialized before the SCSI driver or else, under heavy loads, the Cogent can cause the machine to lock up completely. This was verified with Cogent's technical support [Which, by the way, was incredibly fast and answered my question thouroughly w/followups!]. So, by moving the reference to the network driver from the "Active Drivers" to the very beginning of the "Boot Drivers" attribute in /usr/lib/Devices/System.config/Instance0.table, my machine is now 100% stable [though it now exhibits an occasionally 1-4 second 'pause'-- but that's better than locking up completely]. I suspect the original Cogent driver was only more stable in that it was less effecient and, therefore, was less likely to trigger the heavy-load lock-up. [and, yes, for the test that caused the lock up, I was sending far more traffic than receiving]. b.bum

((2-0)) I had spent not a short amount of time to inspect this problem. Now, I think that the origin of this bug may exist in the NeXT Mach kernel. If it is really so, then, as an end user, I have no way to make an appropriate wrokaround for this bug with keeping the POSIX environemnt. I will show you another suggestive test in the following. In this test, the posix environment is turned off by calling an internal function "setposix" with an argument "0" at various positions in a test program "test1.c". In POSIX environment, "setposix" seems to be called with an argument "1" in "posixcrt0.o" at start up time before main() is called. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- wisdom[9] rm a.out rm: remove a.out? y wisdom[10] ls ./ ../ GO* MEMO test.c test1.c wisdom[11] cat test1.c #include <stdio.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <fcntl.h> #include <string.h> int main(int argc, char **argv) { char msg[] = "This is a test.\n"; int n = strlen(msg); int fd; #ifdef INSERT_SETPOSIX0_I setposix(0); #endif fd = open("/tmp/AHO", O_WRONLY | O_APPEND | O_CREAT, 0600); if (fd < 0) { fprintf(stderr, "Can't open \"/tmp/AHO\".\n"); exit(1); } #ifdef INSERT_SETPOSIX0_II setposix(0); #endif if (write(fd, &msg, n) != n) { fprintf(stderr, "Can't write message.\n"); exit(1); } #ifdef INSERT_SETPOSIX0_III setposix(0); #endif close(fd); #ifdef INSERT_SETPOSIX0_IV setposix(0); #endif exit(0); } wisdom[12] cc -posix -DINSERT_SETPOSIX0_I test1.c wisdom[13] ./GO ===== Result 1 ===== This is a test. ===== Result 2 ===== This is a test. I cannot trace what is going on in the kernel. So, I gave up here. I think that something may be wrong in the NeXT Mach kernel for POSIX environment. ((3)) This is a really serious bug in NEXTSTEP. I found this bug when I was compiling a new daemon "QMAIL" for the mail transfer on my NeXT box. In the compilation of QMAIL, the POSIX environment should be used. Accoringly, due to the bug which is reported in this letter, the daemon compiled in the POSIX environment cannot append incomming emails to my mail box; all the emails were lost... This is a really serious bug of NEXTSTEP. Please fix this problem in the next release of NEXTSTEP. Can anyone confirm that POSIX support is even included in OPENSTEP/Mach? I use a simple utility that creates a named pipe using the POSIX mkfifo() which won't build under OPENSTEP/Mach using the same compiler command that I use under NS 3.3: cc -O -posix mkfifo.c -o mkfifo. The OS/Mach compiler supports the -posix flag, but linking fails because mkfifo is undefined. /usr/lib/libposix.a is missing in OS/Mach. If I copy the NS 3.3 libposix.a to /usr/lib under OS/Mach, the build of mkfifo succeeds, but, of course, the 3.3 libposix.a bugs remain :-( -- Art Isbell NeXT/MIME Mail: aisbell@ix.netcom.com Trego Systems Voice/Fax: +1 408 335 2515 CaseServ: NEXTSTEP/OpenStep Voice Mail: +1 408 335 1154 managed care solutions US Mail: Felton, CA 95018-9442

And if there is any workaround ?? I don't think this is a bug. Remember that there are an infinite number of real values, but your floating-point number must be contained in finite memory, in this case four bytes. Most floating-point numbers as stored in the computer will be rounded or truncated to the closest value that may be expressed by the computer's floating-point numbering system. The Motorola 68040 CPU represents a floating-point number in the following form: (-1)^S x 2^(E-127) x 1.F where S = a one digit binary number dictating the sign E = an eight digit binary number representing the "biased" exponent F = a twenty-three digit binary number representing the fraction In your case 69.99 is best represented using S = 0 (binary) E = 10000101 (binary) = 133 (decimal) F = 00010111111101011100001 (binary) or as stored in memory: 01000010100010111111101011100001 (binary) = 428BFAE1 (hex) Working this out, you get: (-1)^S = (-1)^0 = 1 (i.e. positive sign) 2^(E-127) = 2^(133-127) = 2^6 1.F = 1.00010111111101011100001 (binary) = = 2^0 + 2^(-4) + 2^(-6) + 2^(-7) + ... + 2^(-23) = = 1.09359371663 (decimal) and 1 x 2^6 x 1.09359371663 = 69.9899978643 which has been rounded when displayed on your screen to 69.9899979. That's probably a more complicated answer than you wanted. There isn't a more precise way to store your real number, except as a string literal (which probably isn't too useful). -- -===================================================================- Jean-Paul Samson -==- jsamson@istar.ca -==- NeXTmail welcome, no MIME -===================================================================-

The way float and double are stored by your computer is a lossy representation. There is a more precise way to store your number: use NSDecimalNumber. The Restart and Power-off buttons on the login panel cause a freeze just like the one with the S3/Intel Triton... Someone at NeXT was nice enough to respond to say that he had seen that problem too, although I think my fix is better....provide the user with a Shell script which prompts them to be certain they want to do this and just do a "shutdown -r now" (or -h for halt). Even more annoying, but still acceptable.
From: Kevin_Myers@OrcaComputer.com (Kevin L. Myers) Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.bugs Subject: Workspace improperly mounts some Mac CD-ROMs Date: 16 Aug 1996 02:20:36 GMT Organization: Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia Message-ID: <4v0ltk$7e1@solaris.cc.vt.edu> My company purchased a Macintosh clip art library, ClickArt's "Incredible 65,000 Image Pak," on CD-ROM. Several of the CDs mount fine, but over half of them do not. The CDs that mount correctly display the icon for a Macintosh format cdrom and their /etc/mtab entries are also correct. The CDs that show as empty display the standard CD-ROM icon and are listed in /etc/mtab as being cfs. Normally, we would assume the CDs were faulty, but they read correctly on Macintosh systems. Also, others have reported the same problem with independent copies of the library using different drives. What appears to be happening from the console log is that the Workspace is falsely recognizing the CDs as cdfs. Since the Workspace checks for cdfs before checking for Mac, the discs are mounted incorrectly. Unmounting and remounting the discs manually causes problems with automated mounting of _any_ disc later. Is there a preference to force the Workspace to mount CDs as Macintosh format? Is there a bugfix from Next? (I've mailed them with a bug report, but only received the automated reply.) Has anyone else had this problem and knows a workaround? Thanks in advance, Kevin -- Kevin L. Myers (Kevin_Myers@OrcaComputer.com)

If that isn't enough for such a simple programme as NXBench there is now hope anyway. A speed increase and memory reduction via compression in the window server may have been the intention, but it is definately not the result. Edit.app (and other non- openstep ported apps) is slower. It is slower on my new P133 w/64MB ram under 4.0 than it was on my P100 w/32MB. Something very wrong is going on in 4.0. I don't know what but it is killing speed and eating memory like PacMan. I hope every day that 4.1 will fix this problem. -Mont

Message-ID: <4vda6m$6cf@mars.mixi.net> NeXT finally released upgrades to PDO and EOF Server, but it appears that they are trying to kill it because: 1. I got no documentation on the server. 2. Apparently I need some database client libraries to make my EOF apps link. I figured this out not by reading documentation but by figuring out how to link stuff by looking at makefiles and then finding missing symbols that looked like Oracle client functions. I used nm to find that these symbols were not defined in the adaptor framework. 3. There is no documentation or information telling me how to get these database libraries and they don't appear to be included in the distribution. 4. I can't link in my EOF1.1 stuff with my PDO4.0 stuff because I get runtime errors. Can anyone help? Please respond via e-mail. Dave Holscher

Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.bugs Subject: I had to try it! I read this and thought, "What could I lose?" Read through it and maybe you'll like to try it as well! But please be honest. That is how it works. "MAKE-MONEY-FAST" ----- Adapted article by Jody Vining (#4 below) ---------------- Want to make a few bucks? Quick, easy and cheap? Ok ok, we have all heard this before, laughed at it, thought it was stupid, so did I. But one day, I was bored, and wanted to see if this thing really works, the now infamous newsgroup "make-money-fast" routine. And well, to my surprise, it ACTUALLY WORKED. I didn't make $50,000 like some said, but I DID make $3,200 in 1 month. Thats not bad for a $5 investment! So now try it, maybe you'll make less, maybe you'll make more, but its worth a shot right? The procedure is very simple. STEP 1. Write your name and address on 5 separate pieces of paper with the words "PLEASE ADD ME TO YOUR MAILING LIST". Fold a $1 note or money order or bank draft in each of the pieces of paper and mail them to the following five addresses: ---------------------------------------------------------- 1. Sahba Zadeh, 16115 122 Pl. NE, Bothell, WA 98011, USA 2. John England, 570 Vista Ave. Palo Alto, CA 94306, USA 3. Jeannette Bidegain, 2301 Redwood Street, #1406, Las Vegas, NV 89102,USA 4. Jody Vining, 987 Shetland Ave, Winter Springs, FL, 32708 5. Mitch Whiteley, 1026 N. 510 W. Apt. 4A, Logan, UT 84341 --------------------------------------------------------------- STEP 2. Now remove the 1st name on the list, move the other 4 names up (5 becomes 4, 4 becomes 3 etc) and put your name and address as number 5 on the list. You can do this by re-typing this article or simply editing and re-posting it in this or another newsgroup. STEP 3. Post your amended article to at least 200 new groups (there are 17 000 of them). You are now in the Mail Order Investment Business and you will start receiving $1 returns by mail within a week or two. The more newsgroups you post to, the bigger your return will be. You may want to rent a Post Office Box to handle the volume of mail you are likely to receive. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can use a pseudonym such as "The Manager" or "The Investor", but make sure your address is correct! NOW LET ME TELL YOU WHY THIS SYSTEM WORKS! Of every 200 postings I made, I received an average of 5 replies, YES - ONLY 5, each with a $1 bill enclosed. You make $5 for every 200 postings WITH YOUR NAME AT NUMBER 5. Each person who sent you $1, now also makes let's say, only 200 additional postings WITH YOUR NAME AT NUMBER 4, i.e. 1000 postings. On average therefore, 50 people will send you $1 with your name at number 4. You make $50. Your 50 new agents make 200 posting each WITH YOUR NAME AT NUMBER 3 or 10 000 postings - average return 500 at $1 each is $500. They make 200 postings each WITH YOUR NAME AT NUMBER 2 = 100 000 postings = 5 000 returns at $1 each = $5 000. Finally, 5 000 people make 200 postings each WITH YOUR NAME AT NUMBER 1 and you get a return of $50 000 before you name drops off the list. AND THAT'S IF EVERYONE DOWN THE LINE ONLY MAKES 200 POSTINGS! Total income in one cycle = $55 500. From time to time, when your name is no longer on the list, you take the latest posting that is appearing in the newsgroups, SEND OUT ANOTHER $5 TO THE NAMES THAT ARE ON THE LIST, PUT YOUR NAME IN AT NUMBER 5 AND START POSTING AGAIN. Remember, 200 postings is only a guideline. The more you post, the greater the return. Let's review the reasons why you should do this: THE ONLY COST FACTORS ARE 5 STAMPS, 5 ENVELOPES, AND 5 $1 BILLS. Anyone can afford five dollars to put into such an effortless investment with SPECTACULAR RETURNS. Some people have said to me "What happens if the scheme is 'played out' and no one sends me any money"? Big deal! So you lose $5 - but what are the chances of that happening? Do you realise how many Internet Users there are? Do you realise how many times this scheme can be utilised over and over again - with COMPLETELY NEW people participating? There are not HUNDREDS, NOT EVEN THOUSANDS, BUT HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF NEW INTERNET USERS EVERY MONTH! Remember, read the instructions carefully and play FAIRLY...that's the only way this will work. Get a printout so you can refer back to this article easily. Try to keep a list of everyone that sends you money and always keep an eye on the newsgroup postings to make sure everyone is playing fairly. You know where your name should be.

Looks like you found a genuine performance opportunity! While I was on vacation, one of the graphics wizards at NeXT looked into this one. It turned out to be due to changes in the window geometry management code that was new for OPENSTEP for Mach 4.0. The changes introduced overhead in the calculation of visible, obscured, and revealed rectangles that are done every time a window is moved, particulary when the moved window overlaps itself or other windows. As it turns out, NXBench thinks that a good graphics benchmark is to time a series of repeated overlapping window moves, so it displayed the problem nicely! The performance is reduced only for window geometry changes. Drawing speed, blitting, PS language interpretation, and other operations are not impacted by this. Fortunately, the changes to recover the lost performance were straightforward. Now, I can't comment on unannounced products, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over this one if I were you... From: (Izidor Jerebic) Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.bugs Subject: NotificationCenter's removeObserver does not work Date: 29 Aug 1996 09:06:33 GMT Organization: Select Technology Message-ID: <503mip$pn@lazar.select-tech.si> Keywords: notification center, bug, next Hi, I discovered (bugged NeXT also), that NSNotificationCenter's method removeObserver:notificationName:object: (or in 4.0 removeObserver:name:object:) does not work as documented. If I add an observer X for notification N of object O, then this observer should be removed when calling [nc removeObserver:OBS name:NAME object:OBJ] with any combination of OBS=X or OBS=nil, NAME=N or NAME=nil, OBJ=O or OBJ=nil. This works on 4.0 only when OBS=X (all combinations of NAME and OBJ work). When OBS=nil, nothing works (the observer receives notifications). On 3.3 it works only when combination of OBS, NAME, and OBJ is the precisely same as the one used for addObserver... So in my case, it works only if OBS=X, NAME=N, and OBJ=O. I can remove observer completely with [nc removeObserver:X], but this is not specific enough. The test consists of removing the observer completely with [nc removeObserver:X], adding the observer, then removing the observer with some combination of parameters, and then posting the notification N with object O. Anybody knows when this bug will vanish (or is this the way NeXT modified the OpenStep standard and in the next release the modifications will be in _documentation_) ? I didn't try it on OpenStep Solaris yet. Anybody knows how it works there? izidor Izidor Jerebic SELECT Technology email: izidor.jerebic@select-tech.si
