(-; ) OVERVIEW This GSPrintFilter package includes primarily Aladin Ghostscript, v4.03. It's application here is used as a filter, so that one can use a Non-PostScript printer with NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP. It comes bundled with many public domain fonts (PostScript and otherwise), but will fall back to using installed Postscript fonts in /NextLibrary/Fonts/outline and /LocalLibrary/Fonts/outline. HISTORY 1.11 - Added drivers: epson eps9high eps9mid ibmpro epsonc stcolor lj4dith - Added (Cludged) driver: ljet5l. This is really using the ljet4 driver, but with a lower default resolution (300DPI) to avoid occasional printer memory depletion problems. - Tried compiling against Xnext X11R6 libs, but linking fails with undefined symbols: __XErrorFunction, __XIOErrorFunction. Using nm on /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.a shows these symbols exist, but I don't know wha else to try... anyone? See the README for further details. ____ Rex A. You are able sending faxes using the PrintPanel This means, that you can fax everything you can print. receiving faxes Received faxes can be delivered to your mailbox, and a simple doubleClick will display it. receiving voice calls Received voices can be delivered to your mailbox, and a simple doubleClick will play it. using advanced voice features You are able to listen to recorded voices from a remote place, and you can leave a message for friends. Use: This software should no longer be public domain, because there are other commercial or shareware products in concurrence with smaller concepts. One can only handle telephone lines, which are used exclusive for faxes, the other only handles sending faxes. So: I expect a shareware fee of 40.00 US$ (60,- DM) for each installation Requirements: This software is built and tested with NSI3.3 and a ZyXEL modem U1496EG+. I don't know a reason, why it should not run successfully on black, yellow or green hardware. Probably other ZyXEL modems will also work. Modems produced by other companies will probably not work. Signalizing a fax call: In case of you took off the receiver and - what a surprise - a fax is coming, you are able to make a switch to persuade the modem to take the line for handling this event. Fax on demand: Some companies offer "Fax on demand" service. If you want to use it: there is a way to get such fax. Missing features: * Incoming data calls are not handled (This feature is still not requested). * Only ZyXEL modems U-1496EG+ and E2864 are supported. From: "Lionel P. Aboulkheir" <lionel@wahz.SUMERIS.COM> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: SUMERIS Ships QuantaBase 1.0 Date: 2 Nov 1996 05:05:26 GMT Organization: SUMERIS Technology Message-ID: <55ekqm$loe@news.digifix.com> New Software Release For Immediate Release For more information, please contact: Lionel Aboulkheir 612/474-6505 lionel@SUMERIS.COM SUMERIS Technology releases QuantaBase a new database access and reporting software for NEXTSTEP and OpenStep for Mach. November 1, 1996, Chanhassen, MN SUMERIS Technology, developer of the SUMERIS Accounting System, today announced the availability of QuantaBase 1.0, a new application which incorporates its latest development in database access and reporting. QuantaBase brings client/server, industrial-strength database and reporting tools to the NEXTSTEP and OpenStep community. QuantaBase supports various types of workgroup documents to be used for both data entry and to create multi-page reports using multiple databases. QuantaBase allows the creation of multi-window documents with live and dynamic database connections using drag-and-drop report graphics such as Frames, Columns, Cells, Texts, Text Fields, Images, Sounds and Table Views. Report graphics can include complex formulas mixing text and numeric expressions, database references and cross-document references. QuantaBase is multimedia capable: image or sound graphics can be created with or without database association, as well as complex RTF texts with embedded formulas. QuantaBase unique design allows sophisticated, structured documents to be created with constructs such as Master-Detail relationships and dynamic creation of fetch expressions upon simple user actions. QuantaBase scripting language enables even greater customization and provides an easy to use API to many of QuantaBase functionalities. Scripts may be attached to button or cell graphics to perform various user actions. Script functions include: * mailing functions like print, fax and e-mail functions * database functions to fetch or save records * date, numerical and text functions * general functions like AlertPanel, OpenWindow etc... QuantaBase is an excellent tool for the office. Mailings - whether by mail, fax or e-mail, or all at once- incorporating customized letters, labels and envelops are made as easy as a few clicks. Built around a client/server architecture, QuantaBase is multiuser and multi-server allowing access to multiple databases on different servers. QuantaBase may be used with various third-party database systems as well as with QuantaServer, SUMERIS relational database server, which is provided in its standard version. Commercial licenses for QuantaBase 1.0 are available at $695 per seat and $2,995 for 5 seats. Educational licenses are $295 per seat and $995 for 5 seats. It contains many new objects and fixes all problems reported since the previous release. The MiscKit may be obtained via ftp to any of the following site: ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/sources/classes/MiscKit1.8.1.s.gnutar.gz ftp://ftp.thoughtport.com/pub/next/misckit/MiscKit1.8.1.s.gnutar.gz ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-muenchen.de/pub/comp/platforms/next/Developer/objc/misckit/MiscKit1.8.1.s.gnutar.gz There are also accompanying binary packages built for various architectures available only at: ftp://ftp.thoughtport.com/pub/next/misckit/MiscKit1.8.1.b.NIHS.gnutar.gz ftp://ftp.thoughtport.com/pub/next/misckit/MiscKit1.8.1.b.NI.gnutar.gz The thoughtport.com site always has the most recent official MiscKit distribution available in /pub/next/misckit with all previous versions archived in /pub/next/misckit/old. The MiscKit is an easy to install kit consisting of Objective-C objects, Interface Builder palettes, bundles, and other useful programming resources. All the resources in the MiscKit have been donated by various Internet personalities for the benefit of other NEXTSTEP programmers. Objects include data structures (string, tree, stack, queue, priority queue, linked list), interface widgets (find panel, textfield, button and slider subclasses, clock and calendar views, icon wells, progress pie/bar), macros, other useful objects (lock file, log file, time, stopwatch, serial port, colors, subprocess, remote subprocess, file), frameworks for building complex interfaces (MiscMergeKit, MiscInspectorKit, InfoMenuKit) and even some useful example applications...plus much more! To make the MiscKit more attractive to developers, use of the MiscKit resources is absolutely free of charge, no matter how the resources are used. Redistribution of the MiscKit is also encouraged. Many developers are reluctant to use objects which are under the GNU "Copyleft". As a result, the MiscKit has its own license which allows developers to reuse the code freely, even in commercial projects. Everything possible has been done to encourage the use of the MiscKit to speed development efforts. Any developer who has generally useful objects, palettes, or other programming resources and would like to donate them to the MiscKit effort is welcome to do so. Contact Don Yacktman at don@misckit.com for information on how to prepare a MiscKit submission. By making a submission to the MiscKit, a developer can avoid the hassles of packaging up a formal distribution of their resources and in turn help add to a growing centralized pool of useful resources. The misckit mailing lists are temporarily out of order and we hope to have them up and working at a new site soon. Until then, inquiries and subscription requests should be made to don@misckit.com. If you request a subscription, be sure to specify whether you wish to be part of the development discussion or only receive MiscKit-based press releases. When the mailing lists are once again up and running, a press release will be sent out to and let everyone know about the changes in addresses and any other important details. Please note that the creation of the "misckit.com" domain does NOT mean that the MiscKit is "going commercial" in any way--it will always be free and open as it has been in the past. Nothing has changed and NO special significance should be read into the use of ".com" instead of ".org". The MiscKit has evolved from the DAYMiscKit and several objects released over the past few years by Don Yacktman and other USENET personalities. Don Yacktman Don Yacktman is an alumnus of Brigham Young University, with a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He acts as the MiscKit administrator in his spare time between various NEXTSTEP and Unix consulting projects. # # # # All trademarks mentioned belong to their respective owners. The MiscKit is in no way affiliated with Brigham Young University. Changes since version 1.8.0: V1.8.1 11/01/96 Maintenance and update release: Added MiscTreeBrowser, MiscPopUpButton, MiscSplitBrowser. Added TilingButton, DefaultController, FormField, FindMenuPalette, and HTMLText to Temp area. Fixes and enhancements to list-misc script, MiscClassDecoder, MiscTime, MiscDragViews, cnvwrap, and MiscSplitView [More details about the bug fixes and additions can be found in the MiscKit's History.rtf file.]

The "Voice of the Voter" 1996 election poll is the first example of a website application to come from the two companies. The "Voice of the Voter" application (www.kron.com) is an interactive experience, where voters can take part in a pre-election poll on the California propositions and the presidential race. Web surfers can cast ballots in a mock election and watch the tabulation change before their eyes. The system has been designed to allow participants to cast their votes one time, automatically blocking attempts at multiple ballot casting. Chronicle Broadcasting Company President and Chief Executive Officer Amy McCombs said, "The Internet has given KRON an opportunity to approach our news coverage in new and exciting ways. This joint project allows us to extend "Voice of the Voter" to a new level. By working with WebObjects software, we plan to come up with additional applications to enrich the Web experience for our users." "Voice of the Voter" is a partnership in civic journalism between KRON-TV, KQED-FM and the San Francisco Chronicle. The goal is to help voters become more informed about issues and to give voters a voice in the political process. "Combining two award-winning products, KRON's news and information and NeXT's WebObjects software, creates a powerful experience. NeXT is pleased to be working with KRON Online and we look forward to developing future web applications that will premiere on the KRON site soon," said Mitch Mandich, Vice President of Worldwide Sales for NeXT Software. "Voice of the Voter" is an exemplary use of NeXT's technology and we encourage TV viewers and web surfers alike to get out and vote and personally encounter this perfect marriage of content and technology." WebObjects Provides "Voice of the Voter" Interactivity KRON currently publishes information by hand using HTMl, CGI, and Perl. Since the information they publish is constantly changing, KRON sought a way to automate the process of putting it on the Web. KRON chose WebObjects because it allowed them to automatically generate web pages and get native access to their database. "Voice of the Voter" accesses data in an Oracle database and dynamically creates pages describing the presidential election and ballot propositions as well as the current standing of each in the poll. The WebObjects application server dynamically creates HTML which is vended by a Netscape HTTP server to a customer's browser. The user then has the option of participating in the poll. A series of questions for the presidential election and each of the propositions appears along with radio buttons from which the user chooses his/her selection. The Oracle database is then updated with the latest results, providing a dynamic experience for each new user. About KRON Online KRON Online is KRON's family of sites on the World Wide Web. KRON Online averages nearly two million hits per month. KRON is an NBC affiliate, owned by Chronicle Broadcasting Company of San Francisco. ANNOUNCES JAVAPLAN--AN ESSENTIAL SOLUTION FOR JAVA ENTERPRISE COMPUTING --Software suite takes enterprise Java development to new levels-provides foundation for long-term strategic advantage-- NEW YORK- October 29, 1996 - Lighthouse Design, Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, Inc., today announced its JavaPlan enterprise software development product that enables teams of developers and managers to immediately begin developing scalable, maintainable Java applications. JavaPlan software is scheduled to ship in December 1996. The announcement was made in conjunction with Sun's Java Computing for the Enterprise event, being held October 29-30 at the Equitable Center in New York. "This announcement underscores Sun's continued leadership in providing innovative Java development products," said Dr. Eric Schmidt, Chief Technical Officer of Sun Microsystems, Inc. "JavaPlan ensures that customers will build a solid foundation for long-term competitive advantage as they begin their migration to Java Enterprise Computing." Through an integrated suite of tools, JavaPlan facilitates the development of Java models and component designs-promoting the creation of valuable repositories whose reuse expedites the delivery and increases the quality and maintainability of custom applications. "The reality of object software is that you can't reuse what isn't designed or documented for reuse," said Carol Teasley, VP of Object Technology for FannieMae. "JavaPlan is at the core of our efforts to create a repository of business objects for use across FannieMae. We see it playing a central role in helping us achieve the benefits of component-based software-for today's applications, and those we seek to create in the future." JavaPlan provides five key components necessary for creating a repository of models, code, and business processes. These components include graphical object modeling with support for the representation and reuse of hierarchical classes, subsystems and application frameworks; fully integrated Event Trace diagrams; forward, reverse and "round trip" engineering of pre-existing Java, C++, and Objective-C source code; a flexible code browser for navigating pre-existing source trees; and, an automated mechanism for creating standards-based or customized documentation for publication to paper or the web. As a productivity tool, JavaPlan enables developers to focus on high value activities, and avoid mechanical coding or updating tasks. A code generation component automates the production of source code in Java, C++, Objective-C, and CORBA's Interface Definition Language (IDL). Reverse engineering allows developers to generate live-linked graphical representations from pre-existing source trees. Having incorporated source code into a JavaPlan model, developers can simply drag and drop class graphics from a pplication to application to reuse classes, or higher level application subsystems and frameworks. Developers trained in legacy environments will find JavaPlan's drag and drop approach to object modeling a solid entry point to Java development. A series of tightly integrated development components provide a natural transition between and among several perspectives-from system decomposition to HTML project reporting. As a management tool, applications designed in conjunction with JavaPlan yield a repository of documented components and object models, the existence of which is crucial to organizations seeking to exploit reuse as part of their information technology strategy. Design and model repositories provide an easily accessible pool of information for developers maintaining old code bases, or business managers reviewing business processes. Lighthouse Design was acquired by Sun Microsystems, Inc. in July 1996 to serve enterprises using software to create competitive business advantage. Lighthouse Design's products expedite the development and deployment of Java-based custom applications to the World Wide Web, Sun's Solaris and Microsoft's Windows NT. Target Development announces the beta 4.2 release of ReportPalette for OpenStep and the Enterprise Objects Framework (version 2.0). The ReportPalette is a collection of objects that allow you to easily add custom report writing features into your EOF applications. Unlike traditional report writers that directly access database tables, the ReportPalette reports on NSDictionary values from your Enterprise Objects. EODisplayGroups can be used to define the hierarchy of the report, and Interface Builder serves as the medium for page layout. Using the ReportPalette, keys of your EOs can be mapped directly to columns or free-form text fields on the report page. Images and formatted rich text with imbedded keys can also be added graphically. This WYSIWYG reporting tool is capable of reproducing custom forms, generating mailing labels and form letters, and producing on-the-fly hierarchical column-based and free-form reports. Other ReportPalette Features: + Custom Static and Dynamic Page Sequences; for report cover, insertion, and trailer pages + Custom page backgrounds; for page header and footer information + Automatic Page Layout control at runtime + Horizontal pagination + Multi-level group headers and footers, including totals + Column Headers and Footers, with totals + Support for Report Document Archiving and Unarchiving + Full support for the Foundation classes, including NSString, NSNumber, NSCalendarDate, NSData for RTF(D), and NSImage objects. + Fully documented API for programmatic customization The ReportPalette ships with several demo applications and NIBs, along with install scripts and EOModels for Sybase, Oracle, Informix, and QuickBase. The example NIBs can be loaded and run using IB's 'Test Interface' mode! That's how easy it is! Example NIBs include a column based report, form letters, mailing labels, a free-form report, and a custom healthcare form. A date licensed version of the palette is available via ftp or directly from Target Development. The product is licensed through December 10, 1996. CHaRTSMITH was first released in September, 1993 and has since remained OPENSTEP's most popular charting solution because of its intuitive user interface and industrial-strength application programmer's interface (API). CHaRTSMITH 1.3 supports a number of important new features including the ChartsmithWebKit, a loadable-bundle and library that allow seamless integration of charting features into applications constructed using NeXT Software, Inc.'s WebObjects. Charts now can be produced dynamically from a variety of data sources and displayed in web-based applications. "The ChartsmithWebKit is an incredibly powerful tool for OPENSTEP developers," said Tony Rennier, President of BLaCKSMITH. "Customers developing interactive, web-based applications that perform some kind of data analyses, say on financial performance trends, can now rely on CHaRTSMITH to dynamically create their professional charts and graphs." CHaRTSMITH v 1.3 also features time-date support which allows date and duration data to be used as chart data in addition to all standard numeric formats. Users have a great deal of flexibility in displaying date and duration labels by selecting from a number of formatting options. CHaRTSMITH v 1.3 also features drag-and-drop fill patterns which are especially beneficial when printing to grayscale printers, a small-screen user inteface mode for users of laptop computers, image filtering for export of images in any supported format, and export of data tables in HTML format. Date: 13 Nov 1996 21:08:17 GMT Organization: Princeton Theological Seminary Message-ID: <56ddc1$c5u@news.digifix.com> This program can be found at: ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/devtools/SegHoarker.1.0.0.README ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/devtools/SegHoarker.1.0.0.NIHS.b.tar.gz (it is also linked to /pub/next/latest_versions/SegHoarker.tar.gz) SegHoarker v.1.0.0 Author: Garrick Toubassi <garrick@netmosphere.com> Compiled-4Fat-For-NeXTStep-By: Timothy J. Luoma <luomat@peak.org> Date: 11 Nov 1996 General Description: SegHoarker provides a front end to the two utilities segedit and otool. It allows users to examine [thin] MACH-O executables and extract .nib, .snd, .tiff, .eps, and others. These embedded files can also be replaced, allowing you to customize applications. *** Note from TjL *** Garrick has been nice enough to release a QuadFat version of one of the most handy Dev Tools in NeXTdom. This program remains free, but it remains the property of Garrick Toubassi. Permission is granted to redistribute the program as long as his name remains attached to it. This is the same version (1.0.0) that has been on the archives for NeXT-hardware only. Garrick has been nice enough to agree to make it available QuadFat for the less fortunate (ie those without access to a NeXT ;-). "BUGS" These are not really bugs in SegHoarker, just things you should be aware of: - the "replace" function cannot be undone. Don't fiddle with it unless you know what you are doing.... or practice on a backup copy. - segedit and otool only come with the NS/developer - segedit (and I believe 'otool' as well) cannot perform its actions on MAB files. DISCLAIMER: This app is for changing binaries. Extracting information from binaries should not be destructive; replacing information (if it is not correct) could be destructive. In any case YOU, the user ARE WHOLLY RESPONSIBLE. Neither myself, nor Garrick Troubassi, nor NeXT Software, Inc, nor Netmosphere Inc. nor anyone else is responsible other than you, the user. Use of this application is content and agreement with these terms and conditions. Also: this app is untested on non-NeXT machines, obviously. This should not be a problem, because you wouldn't work on anything that you don't have a backup of, right ?? Please let me <luomat@peak.org> know how it works on non-NeXT machines. I assume it will work just fine.

Lowell Schneider <mailto:Lowell@SchemaResearch.com> from Schema Research <http://www.SchemaResearch.com/> will present the standard NeXT Enterprise Object Framework (EOF) demo "on steroids," combining the power of EOF with the power of graphical database management. Mr. Schneider will demo two cycles of database application development, using SchemaE <http://www.SchemaResearch.com/Products/SchemaE.htmld/> to build the database and the EOF model, EOModeler to customize the model, and InterfaceBuilder to construct the User Inferface. We might even write three lines of code, given enough time. This demo truly shows the power of the NeXT development environment, with a focus on how applications are enhanced and maintained. Mr. Schneider has developed database applications since '87 and NEXTSTEP database applications since '91. He has instructed over 20 one-week courses in Sybase database development, and EOF application development. A copy of SchemaE50 (US$950) will be raffled at the end of the evening. As usual, we'll cover the latest and greatest OPENSTEP info and rumors. Post-meeting discussion and activities begin promptly after 8:00pm at the Berghoff pub, 17 W. Adams Street. It uses the NFS-interface to the kernel to make the files available and the Linux code for the lowlevel filesystem access. * What filesystems can currently be accessed? ============================================= The filesystem sources are taken from the Linux 2.0.25 kernel, which supports the following filesystems for disk devices: ext the old Linux native filesystem ext2 the new Linux native filesystem xiafs (don't know) minix the minix filesystem (Linux floppies) umsdos unix permissions on top of a FAT filesystem msdos normal FAT filesystem vfat FAT filesystem with long filenames (Win95, NT compatible) iso9660 CDROM filesystem xenix (don't know) sysv (don't know) coherent (don't know) hpfs the OS/2 filesystem affs the Amiga Fast FileSystem ufs (don't know) I don't know whether all of them are implemented for read and write. I have tested (only very short tests) read and write for: ext2, minix, umsdos, msdos, vfat * What do I need to run vmount? =============================== To run vmount: 1.) An i386 based machine (you probably don't need vmount on others...). 2.) NEXTSTEP 3.2 or higher (I have only tested on 4.0, however). To compile from the sources: 1.) NEXTSTEP 3.3 Developer or higher. I have also tested with gcc 2.7.2 and NEXTSTEP 3.2 Developer, this works too. 2.) GNU-make. It is rumored that 4.0 comes with GNU-make, but I have not found it on my 4.0 until now ... And, of course, you need the vmount distribution: vmount-0.0.I.b.gnutar.gz for the binary only distribution vmount-0.0.I.s.gnutar.gz for the vmount sources vmount-Linux-2.0.25.s.gnutar.gz for the Linux filesystem sources You can get these files from ftp://hal.kph.tuwien.ac.at/pub/NeXT/tools/ If vmount is stable enough (in it's development, but hopefully in operation, too), I will upload to the main NeXT archives. * How reliable is it? ===================== I'm afraid not very. I have done only limited testing and have still found many bugs (most of these are fixed now, however). I would not trust vmount to have write access to a partition or disk with valuable data. If you want to test vmount for a while before you use it on your real data, you can run it with a small spare partition, with a ZIP drive, with a floppy (although I have not figured out how to access the raw data on floppies yet) or on a disk image file. Please mail me your experiences. Success stories are preferred, of course :-). -- Christian Starkjohann <cs@hal.kph.tuwien.ac.at> or <cs@ds1.kph.tuwien.ac.at>, finger for PGP Public Key. There is no need to download it if you have fetched it with a previous version! * What has changed since 0.0 and 0.1? ===================================== Quite a lot. Most important: - readdir() works for larger directories now (there was a bug in 0.0 which limited directories to a random multiple of 49...) - Read/write access works for ext2, vfat and minix now (tested by unarchiving and compiling medium sized source trees and deleting them afterwards). The other filesystems are still more or less untested. - Read only access for NTFS added. - Permission checking added. - I have found out how to use floppies with vmount. For more details see the Changelog. If you still don't know what vmount is, here some excerpts from the README: * What does vmount do? ====================== vmount is a utility that allows you to mount foreign filesystems in your directory hierarchy. It uses the NFS-interface to the kernel to make the files available and the Linux code for the lowlevel filesystem access. * What do I need to run vmount? =============================== To run vmount: 1.) NEXTSTEP 3.3 Developer or higher. I have also tested with gcc 2.7.2 and NEXTSTEP 3.2 Developer, this works too. gcc 2.2.2, which comes with 3.2 Developer, complains about prototype mismatches for built in functions. This can probably be solved easily, but I have not tried. You should edit the Makefile to reflect the compiler you intend to use. 2.) GNU-make. Openstep 4.0 and higher comes with GNU-make, it is available under the name "gnumake". And, of course, you need the vmount distribution: vmount-0.2.I.b.gnutar.gz for the binary only distribution vmount-0.2.I.s.gnutar.gz for the vmount sources vmount-Linux-2.0.25.s.gnutar.gz for the Linux filesystem sources This directory contains the "fs" and "include" hierarchy of the Linux kernel sources. "fs" contains only the filesystem specific subdirectories. vmount-ntfs-cs.s.gnutar.gz for the modified ntfs sources For more information please read the README file at ftp://hal.kph.tuwien.ac.at/pub/NeXT/tools/vmount/vmount-0.2.I.README --

From: dana@oceansoft.com Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: Ocean Software ships Complete Access v1.3 for NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP/MACH 4.1 Date: 22 Nov 1996 05:30:03 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <573dor$10d@news.digifix.com> News For Immediate Release: Contact: Dana W. Parrish 904-363-1646 dana@oceansoft.com OCEAN SOFTWARE SHIPS COMPLETE ACCESS v1.3 for NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP/MACH 4.1 November 14, 1996 - Jacksonville, Florida - Ocean Software, Inc. is pleased to announce that Complete Access version 1.3 for the NEXTSTEP and OpenStep environment has been released. Complete Access is a database query, reporting, and decision making application which works in conjunction with NeXT's Enterprise Objects Framework to generate sophisticated documents for the end-user. Complete Access enables both professionals and generalists to create hierarchical reports, forms, columnar reports, form letters, envelopes, and labels quickly and easily. The application can also produce summary pages to display aggregate and/or calculated values without showing the individual records from which they were derived. New features found in Complete Access v1.2 include: - Performance improvements - Licensing code - Minor enhancements - Various minor bug fixes Database reporting applications typically create static documents which require continuous query execution to be modified. Complete Access documents are dynamic, allowing the user to perform "what-if" scenarios on data by omitting, finding, sorting, and applying various filters to browse a subset of data retrieved with a database query or text file import. Multiple documents may reference the results of a single query or import and multiple query results and imports are easily combined. "This version includes several new features requested by our customers as well as other minor bug fixes and improvements." says Randy Leonard, president of Ocean Software, Inc. "And since it runs on OpenStep/Mach, it actually will help those making the transition from our NEXTSTEP tools to our soon-to-be-released tools for OpenStep and WebObjects." From: dana@oceansoft.com Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: Ocean Software ships Complete Access Developer v1.3 for NEXTSTEP Date: 22 Nov 1996 05:31:40 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <573drs$12n@news.digifix.com> News For Immediate Release: Contact: Dana W. Parrish 904-363-1646 dana@oceansoft.com OCEAN SOFTWARE SHIPS COMPLETE ACCESS DEVELOPER v1.3 for NEXTSTEP November 14, 1996 - Jacksonville, Florida - Ocean Software, Inc. is pleased to announce Complete Access Developer version 1.3 for the NEXTSTEP environment has been released. Complete Access Developer is an Interface Builder Palette which works with NeXT's Enterprise Objects Framework to permit rapid development of database query, reporting, and data analysis functionalities in mission critical custom applications. The impact of this tool is significant since it permits the developer to design a sophisticated report in just minutes, assign any number of queries or text file imports, and be done. There is literally no programming required for most applications, and all database access is performed via EOF. Complete Access Developer will significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to embed hierarchical reports, forms, columnar reports, form letters, envelopes, and/or labels into custom applications. New features found in Complete Access Developer v1.3 include: - Performance improvements - Licensing code - Minor enhancements - Various minor bug fixes "The latest release of Complete Access Developer for NEXTSTEP confirms our continual support for this platform." says Randy Leonard, president of Ocean Software, Inc. "And just as we continue supporting our customers that use NEXTSTEP, others will be pleased to soon receive our reporting and data analysis tools for the OpenStep and WebObjects environment for each of the various platforms supported by NeXT." The reports created with Complete Access Developer are saved within your application, so they cannot be modified by end-users. But it is possible for applications built with Complete Access Developer to read reports created with our end-user reporting application, Complete Access. This permits your unassisted customers to modify the reports generated by your custom application, should your design permit it. So depending on your needs, we offer the security required by some and flexibility demanded by others. Since Complete Access Developer is comprised of the same objects used to create Complete Access, the functionality of our palette is nearly identical to our application. Features included in Complete Access Developer include: - The perfect complement to EOF - Full support of DBKit - Extensive query support, including: - A graphical query builder empowers even the novice, no knowledge of SQL is required - Query parameterization - Results of many queries are easily combined - Automatic generation of subqueries as an optional feature - An SQL editor - Stored Procedures - Query results may be shared by many documents - Extensive import/export support, including: - Arbitrary field and record delimiters - Drag & drop import with optional automatic model generation - Export data from multiple tables to a single text file - Exported data may be sorted - Filters to exclude specific records from the exported data - Extensive aggregate support, including: - Total, Running Total, Percent of Total, Average, Minimum, Maximum, and Count - Group aggregates, unlimited nested groups are supported - Filters to exclude specific records from the aggregate result - Extensive document interfaces - Hierarchical reports, forms, columnar reports, form letters, envelopes, labels, and summary pages - Free form design environment - A paper interface allows you to see how your document will appear as you design it - A document's paper size is arbitrary, your reports automatically reflow to the paper size you require - Extensive support for calculations including: - Seven distinct function categories: - Math - Statistics - Trigonometric - Text - Date/Time - Database - Logical - Ability to define custom functions - Calculations on aggregated values - Aggregates on calculated values - Automatic scanning for syntax errors - Shared "smart" variables - Utilize variables in any number of calculations - Embed variables within queries - Display variables in any number of documents - Use variables for layout, aggregate, and data export filters - Arbitrary formatting of dates, times, and numbers - Documentation - Tutorial - User Manual - API Manual - Developer Manual - On-line Help - FAQ's - Extensive API to empower developers - Currently porting to the OpenStep platform Complete Access v1.3 is available for Intel-, Motorola-, SPARC- and HP PA-RISC-based versions of NEXTSTEP 3.2 or later. Pricing starts at $1999 per user. A run-time fee of $149 is required for each application created with Complete Access Developer. A demonstration version is available via ftp, e-mail, or disk. Quantrix.app is a powerful spreadsheet by Lighthouse, Inc. which can be reached at http://www.lighthouse.com QAPI is Application Programmer's Interface to Quantrix. Installation: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Copy ExportHtml.bundle into your ~/Library/Quantrix if intended for your use only, or into /LocalLibrary/Quantrix to make the bundle available to all users. When you start Quantrix.app the next time, you will notice a new menu item 'Extras'. Usage: ~~~~~~ Create a table in Quantrix. Then click on the item 'Extras/Export Html...' in the menu and choose a file name in the save panel which appears. NS Version: ~~~~~~~~~~~ Compiled under NS 3.2 for Black Motorola Hardware. Tested on black hardware. Should run and compile easily under other versions of NS and on other plattforms. Limitations: ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Only simple tables are exported correctly. The HTML table contains the names of the columns, but not the row names. I needed this feature since I didn't want the names of my students to appear on the web. Only their student numbers and grades. In addition, accessing both - column and row names - is a lot more complicated. You are free to expand this example as long as you don't remove my name from the code. Could someone compile it QuadFAT? Thanks. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Good luck Rudy Blazek blazek@stt.msu.edu http://www.stt.msu.edu/~blazek November 22, 1996
From: Ondra Cada <ocs@ms.mff.cuni.cz> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: PSION bitmap (PIC) filter Date: 24 Nov 1996 04:52:31 GMT Organization: OCSoftware Message-ID: <578kaf$ia2@news.digifix.com> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PSION bitmap (PIC) filter v1.0/Intel OCSoftware just released the 1.0/Intel version of the PSION bitmap (PIC) filter. It is very simple filter service, which converts the PSION bitmap files (usually these with the "pic" suffix) to NEXTSTEP-readable TIFF format. Terribly sorry for non-Intel users - let me know if some of you need the filter, and I'll try to do something for you (but no promises!). I have written this sw in hurry, and it is not portable (yet?). * INSTALLATION * Installation is straighforward: simply copy the PSIONpicFilter.service to some ...Library/Services folder and log out and back. Then you will be able to see the PSION PIC files in the Workspace Contents Inspector, drag&drop them to Edit RTF(D) windows etc - the only thing you must ensure is that they have the "pic" suffix (eg. myNiceScreenShot.pic). In case you don't know it, you may get anytime the screenshot from your S3a (or S3c or Siena - I don't know if this works for Workabouts or them old S3's) simply by pressing Control-Shift-PSION-S. The screenshot is saved to \Screen.pic. Then you can transfer it to your NEXTSTEP eg using my S3Link... Caution! The OmniImageFilter registers the "pic" suffix as well. Should you want to use both filters, you must edit either the file PSIONpicFilter.service/services or the file OmniImageFilter.service/services and change one of them. You also can simply uncomment the registration in the OmniImageFilter: ... # # PIXAR PICture file (reading) # #Filter: convertToTIFF #Port: OmniImageFilter #User Data: pic #Send Type: NXFilenamePboardType:pic #Return Type: NXTIFFPboardType #Executable: OmniImageFilter #Timeout: 30000 ... * PRICING * Freeware. The only thing you can't is reverse engineering and/or changing the software (but the possible change of the suffix in the services file). You can use and spread it any way you want; you can even sell this software as part of a bigger software package if you want to (you can't sell it alone). * WARRANTY * Usual absolutely-no-warranty conditions; if the software eat up whole your computer and start chasing your family, it's only _your_ responsibility. * AVAILABILITY * Software is available at ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/apps/graphics/converters/PSIONpicFilter.service.I.tar.gz If you can't find the software, try the submissions folder. Supported architectures: sorry, only Intel so far Supported software: NEXTSTEP 3.3 (very probably will work with 4, untested) * ABOUT THE COMPANY * OCSoftware is a small private company in Prague, Czech Republic, specialized in NEXTSTEP and PSION software development. Although mainly focused to the vertical market with proprietary software packs, we had prepared some general applications as well, as - PSION NewEncoding Kit, which allows to use any code page on PSION Series3/3a/3c/Workabout/Siena - PSION Software Localization Kit, which allows to localize Series3/3a/ Siena to any language - NEXTSTEP NewEncoding Kit, which allows to use any code page with NEXTSTEP (developed with H.C.C., the premium driver writer) - NEXTSTEP FIDONet Message Editor - NEXTSTEP KeySwitch application to select wanted keyboard by one click - NEXTSTEP Czech spellchecker - NEXTSTEP Universal spellchecker, using ASCII file as dictionary - NEXTSTEP RTF Filter, converting RTFD to ASCII with numbered paragraphs and figures - PSION Ophir application, to supervise accounts - NEXTSTEP S3Link, the application allowing to transfer files from/to PSIONs using the PSION Link protocol - NEXTSTEP RsComp, PSION Resource compiler - some games to attract users :) (Gomoku, Belegost, for both platforms) * FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE CONTACT * OCSoftware Email: ocs@ms.mff.cuni.cz, MIME OK, NeXTmail preferred (if - and **ONLY IF** - this address doesn't work, send please the message to tom@hukatronic.cz /and don't forget to write it's for me, not for Tom/). -End-

"I have heard from a number of customers who have been told by their contacts that Mesa is no longer for sale" said Paul Lynch, Managing Director of P & L Systems. "This isn't true! Mesa has an assured future in our hands, and we have been continuing to invest in Mesa with new development. There has been a lot of talk about fall out from the NeXT developer community recently; Mesa isn't one of those products."
