From: "Timothy J. Luoma" <luomat@nerc3.nerc.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: 'peak' FTP site announces renovations and construction Date: 3 Oct 1996 07:01:16 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <52vobs$mp1@news.digifix.com> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For more information please contact: The NeXT FTP Site Maintainers at PEAK 850 SW 15th Street Corvallis Oregon 97331 email: next-ftp@peak.org ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next CORVALLIS, OREGON (Thr Oct 03 21:19:55 PDT 1996) -- The NeXTStep/OpenStep FTP site at 'peak' is about to undergo some renovation, remodelling, and all around reorganization. We believe that these changes will allow users of our FTP site to make more effective use of our site, with a new filesystem structure that strives to be clearly, more specificly detailed, more consistent, and more readily understandable. Toward this end, you will notice over the next few months some slight changes, and some significant changes. Here is a brief outline of those changes as they are currently envisioned: - CREATION OF NEW DIRECTORY STRUCTURE: What we have is good, but what we will have will be better. The 'peak' ftp site has a long NeXT history, and a lot has changed since the beginnings way back when the site was found at cs.orst.edu. NeXTStep can now run on more than just NeXT hardware, OpenStep has arrived on the scene, and tons of freeware, shareware, and commercial products have been added. The time has come for a structure that reflects those changes. New directories will be made, old ones will be renamed and/or reorganized. Source code (where available) and compiled binaries will be located under the same parent directory, giving users much easier access to find everything that is available in the shortest amount of time. - STANDARDIZATION OF FILENAMES: Filenames will be renamed to reflect the type of file it is and what architectures are present in binary programs (ie: NeXT, Intel, HP, Sparc). All README files will be renamed to end with ".README" and will be in plaintext ASCII format. - RECOMPRESSION USING 'gzip': Many of the files present at 'peak' are already compressed using 'gzip' (the GNU zip program) which is capable of much greater compression than the normal Unix compress (.Z) format. 'gzip' has been a part of the standard NeXTStep distribution since version 3.2 and is publically available at many sites, including ours! Files which were compressed using the Workspace Manager's 'Compress' menu item (ie files ending in .compressed) have been renamed to .tar.Z and will be recompressed using 'gzip'. While the .Z -> .gz program is already underway, there are over 1000 files on 'peak' which were compressed with the Unix compress, so this will take awhile to complete! - A NEW SITE NAME: While the URL "ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next" still works, we have added another hostname "ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next" to the machine. This more clearly follows the Internet "standard" (if there is such a thing!) of FTP sites being designated with a hostname which begins with 'ftp.' Please note that both URLs will point you to the same machine, the same files, etc. However, "ftp.next.peak.org" is the preferred hostname. - SUBMISSIONS FOLDER: If you have used 'peak' over the past few months, you have probably noticed that the '/pub/next/submissions' folder has accumulated a great deal of submissions in it. We hope to have this folder entirely cleared out as soon as possible after submissions reach us. YOU CAN HELP US! When you submit something to 'peak' please email us at "next-ftp@peak.org" and tell us what you have submitted and where you think it should go. Be sure to read the new document found at: ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/submissions/SUBMISSION-GUIDELINES.README for more information on how you can best send us your submission. You'll notice that the 'submissions' folder is just about empty, except for anything submitted in the past 2 weeks. The submissions have been filed away. Check out the index files in /pub/next. [ Please note: If you have any trouble uploading a submission, please email us at "next-ftp@peak.org" and let us know. Please _DO_NOT_ email us the file! Thanks! ] We will keep you up-to-date with these changes as they go along. You can also see our own log of the changes to the site at: ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/change.log One final note: Please make sure you check any and all links you might have to our site from your web pages. One way to keep track might be to use the FREE Url-minder service at: "http://www.netmind.com/" (we have no connection to that site whatsoever, we just think it's cool.) Thanks! By using the methods explained in the README you can use this script to automatically log yourself in after a reboot (using the loginwindow's DefaultUser dwrite) AND have your password re-installed after you are logged in. For users of standalone machines who can control physical access to their machine, this is a nice bonus. Like to leave yourself logged in all night, but you'd also like to reboot at 3am to clean our the swapfile? By using this script you can do that, and be logged in when you wake up in the morning. Hate to have to manually log back in after a panic? Well, using this script, you can avoid that hassle of waiting for 'fsck' to finish so you can login. Go walk the dog, and when you come back, you'll be logged in. Usage instructions of a more specific nature can be found in the README and the script itself. Use only as directed. Use at your own risk. READ the README and the SCRIPT (you'll have to make a few small customizations to the script to make it work for you! It's clearly marked and commented!) If you have problems, you know where to find me ;-)

From: steve@biostat.ucsf.EDU (Steve Shiboski) Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: R Statistical Software for NEXTSTEP 3.3 Date: 4 Oct 1996 20:12:42 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <533r3q$6jk@news.digifix.com> ----------------------------------------------------------------------- R ALPHA PRE-RELEASE for NEXTSTEP version 3.3 (M68k and Intel) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Announcing a NEXTSTEP port of the R language for statistical programming. NEXTSTEP support for the statistical programs SAS and S-PLUS was dropped when NeXT stopped making hardware, leaving statisticians running NEXTSTEP in an awkward position. R is an extremely powerful alternative to these commercial packages distributed under the GNU public license. R is written by Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka of the Dept. of Statistics, University of Auckland. Read the README file with this distribution to find out more about R. Note that users of S and S-PLUS will find R very easy to use (and very fast). If you don't know S, check out "The New S Language" (Becker R, Chambers J, Wilks A; Wadsworth, 1988) to help you get started. I have placed binaries for M68k and Intel architecture in the following NeXT-specific ftp sites: ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/submissions/R-0.12.N.b.tar.gz ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/submissions/R-0.12.I.b.tar.gz ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/submissions/R-0.12.README You'll need X11 drivers to view graphics. I have used R with both CubXWindows and co-Xist X11 emulation under NEXTSTEP 3.3. R will run from any shell (e.g. Terminal or Stuart), but graphics will have to be written out using a Postscript driver. Disclaimer: This is a pre-alpha version. I have only tested the binary under NS 3.3 on m68K and Intel architecture. I have not tested it extensively -- so far, it seems to be working properly. However, there will be bugs, so use at your own risk! If you want to build R for another architecture, you are on your own. It comes bundled with many public domain fonts (PostScript and otherwise), but will fall back to using installed Postscript fonts in /NextLibrary/Fonts/outline and /LocalLibrary/Fonts/outline. This release fixes a few things: OUGHT to work on m68k now, includes full ghostscript target support for image types (like ppm, pdf, etc), supports gamma correction for dark-printing bubblejet printers. INSTALLATION NOTE: most of these steps require root access. By default, the Installer.app will place all relavent files in /usr/local/lib/ghostscript. If you want it installed somewhere else, you're on your own. In order for ghostcript to use any custom installed fonts in /LocalLibrary/Fonts you'll need to create an outline directory containing symbolic links similar to the one you'll find in /NextLibrary/Fonts/outline Provided in this package is a script named 'outline.links' that will output shell script commands, that when executed in the given Font directory, will create the proper symbolic links. Once all files are in place, you'll need to create a Ghostscript printer using PrintManager.app. There are several generic ppd files included in this archive that you may use: you'll have to place them in either /NextLibrary/PrinterTypes/English.lproj or /LocalLibrary/PrinterTypes/English.lproj in order for PrintManager to use them. Alternatively, you can probably just create a printer entry using any ppd you already have (ie. it probably doesn't matter... much... at this stage). Run the provided GSFilter.postinstall script. Unless you specify otherwise on its command line, it assumes you want to use the ljet4 driver and name the new printer LocalGS. Alternatively, you may peruse the scripts contents and make the neccessary changes to NetInfo by hand using NetInfoManager. LIMITATIONS 1. This package has been tested only on Intel systems using the deskjet, ljet2p and ljet4 drivers. 2. Ghostscript won't always be able to parse the postscript you give it. 3. Ghostscript insists on PS input, so you cannot print plain text files (at least not directly). 'lpr mytextfile.txt' fails. You COULD, however, use 'enscript'. Try 'man enscript' for more details. 4. Occurences of faulty output has been verified when printing in Landscape mode (using ljet4 driver) TODO 1. The package is still too big. A lot of fat could have been trimmed by not including ALL of the optional ghostscript fonts and documentation. 2. Installation could be easier. (-; HISTORY 1.0 Initial Package 1.1 Upgraded to Aladin Ghostscript 4.03 Fixed runtime error for m68k (compile problem). NOTE: problems MAY exist for untested platforms: hppa, sparc. Included support for gamma correction to compensate for VERY dark bubblejet printouts. See the lpd.filter script for details. Thanks to: Bill Bumgarner. Included ALL ghostscript output targets (including X11, vairous image types and pdf). This made the binary much larger. X11R5 support privided via co-Xist developer (X11R5). I MAY compile against X11R6 Xnext libraries (for another release) if there is interest. Also included are libraries and documentation for WebObjects, NeXT's cutting-edge framework for creating applications on the World Wide Web. WebObjects recently received the Editor's Choice Award from PC Magazine. Evolution has utilized NeXT technology since its inception, starting with the use of NeXT-made servers for MindVox, launched nearly five years ago as Manhattan's first public dialup ISP. Today Evolution uses NeXT solutions for to build robust applications on the Internet for corporate clients. The Peanuts mirror site is the first of several services the company plans to offer for the benefit fo the NeXT user and developer communities. COPYING: The BusLogicFamily is shareware. You can freely distribute without changing or removing any parts of the package. If you found the driver reliable, please, register the driver. For more details see document Registration.rtf inside BusLogicFamily.1.20.I.bd.tar.gz. Changes between version 1.16 and 1.20: 1. Driver now supports SCSI command queuing. Driver automatically detects SCSI devices supporting command queuing and it is enabled only for devices which supports it. For better compatibility the command queueing is enabled after establishing the Synchronous transfer mode (if enabled), since most devices that support command queuing may not be able to handle an ID message, followed by a Tag Message, followed by a Synchronous Transfer Negotiations message. 2. BusLogic_PCI.table for PCI BT946 card was added. This will enable BT946C cards, from revision C on up, to use NeXTSTEP PCI support. This entry is unfortunately untested, but should work. Luoma EMAIL: luomat@nerc.com CHANGES: 1.2.0 -- added functionality to test for the existence of a password via the argument 'confirm' [ the rest of the script is the same except for the above change ] submitted to: ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/submissions/fiddlepass.1.2.NIHS.bs.tar.gz ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/submissions/fiddlepass.1.2.README PURPOSE (For standalone NeXTs): NOTE: this script requires root access. It should NOT be installed SETUID root, but it does use 'asroot' in its present form. Other possible workarounds (ie those which do not use 'asroot') are possible, but are left to the user as an exercise (as my old CS prof used to say). The 'fiddlepass' script is a way to automatically manipulate your password. The script takes THREE arguments: `off' `on' `confirm' `off' will remove your password (and save it, encrypted, in a file) `on' will replace your password back into the NetInfo directory `confirm' will check to see whether or not you have a password. Why would you want to do this? I don't know why _you_ would want to do this, maybe you wouldn't. However, I use it with my standalone NeXT to automatically log myself in after a reboot and then restore my password. How do I do that? Well, I call 'fiddlepass off' in /etc/rc.local, and I call 'fiddlepass on' in a script which is executed via the Workspace.app's dwrite "LaunchPaths". I have set root's loginwindow DefaultUser to match my login name (which means that if my account does not have a password at startup, I will automatically be logged in, as with the `me' account after the first installation). Now it is slightly more complex than that, you will have to edit the sh script 'fiddlepass' (a few lines, clearly marked, at the beginning of the script). HISTORY: I am not worried about my computer's security at home. Only my wife and I have access to the machine. Frequently I reboot the machine right before I go to bed, to clear out the swapfile. However, I like to be logged in when first wake up, so I can start PPP and get my mail. The problem is that I either have to wait for the reboot to finish and log myself back in, or I have to login in the morning. I thought about removing my password and just using the (as root:) dwrite loginwindow DefaultUser luomat which would automatically log me in, BUT 1) I didn't like the idea of no password when I have PPP running, even with Dynamic IP addresses 2) I didn't like that I couldn't logout and login as another user (Scott Hess, I think, pointed out that you can override the auto-login by holding down the left mouse button, but I didn't know that until I was just about done with this script. With this method, I can logout as normal because my password exists, and so I will not be automatically logged back in So I wrote this script to dump the NetInfo database stuff, replace my entry with an identical entry that lacked the password, and voila! Well, not voila, until Luke Howard told me how to tell the computer to look for changes in the NetInfo database (see below, ACKS). WARNINGS, BUGS, ETC Of course, you use this at your own risk, entirely. If someone modifies the netinfo database while this script is running, weird things might happen. If some part of your login information changes (ie shell) after you turn off your password and before you turn it on, the old information will be replaced. If something goes wrong, you might end up without a password (ie the password file is deleted, unreadable, etc etc etc). Probably more stuff I haven't found yet, but I can't think of anything. Turning off your password is inherently dangerous, even if just for a few moments. I suggest it only for those who are using a NeXT that is not part of a network, or those who are not able to control who has access to your machine. Remember, anyone can reboot the machine and then be logged into your account. For those of you who can deal with the above, it is a nice little trick, especially when 'fsck' runs after a crash (you'll be logged in whenever it is finished). This would be especially cool with NeXTs which can power themselves on at a certain time. Think about it, you arrive home from a long day at work just in time to find your NeXT sitting nice and ready for you to use it. CHANGES: 1.2.0 -- added functionality to test for the existence of a password via the argument 'confirm' ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: Thanks to Luke Howard <lukeh@xedoc.com.au> for telling me thatkill -HUP <lookupd pid> would tell it to re-read the netinfo data. Without that, this script was worthless. FUTURE: No plans at the present. Feel free to suggest improvements, changes, etc.

This capability, codenamed French Roast, will allow developers to write WebObjects applications entirely in Java, Sun's dynamic programming language for building network based applications. In December, WebObjects Enterprise 3.0 customers will be able to download the server-side Java extensions directly from NeXT's website at http://www.next.com and benefit from the marriage of WebObjects' proven technology and the popular Java programming language. Adding WebObjects support for server-side Java provides enterprise developers with greater flexibility, while opening the power of WebObjects to the Java developer community. WebObjects will enable enterprise-scale Java applications by allowing users to customize WebObjects application servers in Java with rapid development tools that integrate disparate data sources and applications. NeXT is committed to supporting flexible, multi-tier Java architectures and ensuring that development today can be leveraged in the future. "NeXT is aggressively delivering on its strategic goal to interoperate with industry standards and market leaders. The Java extension is a natural implementation of that goal," said Avie Tevanian, NeXT's vice president of engineering. "We have listened to our customers and the marketplace and are quickly responding to their demands by providing server-side Java applications today." Making Server-Side Java A Reality NeXT is integrating standard Java virtual machines with the NeXT dynamic runtime so that Java objects and NeXT objects can communicate transparently. The NeXT Java extension allows customers to start developing robust enterprise applications with Java, while taking advantage of the proven scalability, database access and performance in WebObjects Enterprise. Customers can develop complete and functional multi-tier database applications in Java. By integrating with the standard virtual machines, customers can chose the Java compiler of their choice. This approach will allow customers to select the programming language that is best for the task at hand. For example, customers may choose to prototype their application in WebScript for the rapid development possible with a scripting language, but may later implement business objects in Java and performance critical sections in C, C++, and Objective-C. For current NeXT customers porting their current applications to Java, a facility will be provided that makes their existing business objects available in Java. WebObjects Builder provides drag and drop application development, and is the first product to easily bind client-side components to server-based enterprise applications. Developers now have the choice of using traditional HTML-based forms or browser-based applets to connect to applications running on the server. In addition, WebObjects 3.0's browser-based component support enables developers to create applications where the processing is balanced between web client components and application servers decreasing the need for entire page redisplay and improving user experience. WebObjects Enterprise 3.0 will begin shipping to customers in early November. The award-winning WebObjects Enterprise application server allows developers to rapidly create dynamic web applications while enabling access to existing corporate data and applications. The development environment includes many pre-built client and server components which can extend traditional client/server systems to the Web. And, unlike other web solutions, the WebObjects 3.0 application server dynamically creates SQL for flexible access to enterprise corporate data. Organizations swiftly gain competitive advantage by using WebObjects to develop global Internet, corporate Intranet or business-to-business web applications. Many organizations, including Dell Computer, Merrill Lynch, Reebok International Ltd., and The Sharper Image have deployed applications powered by WebObjects. "Traditional client/server and Web application development techniques are converging," said Richard Guth, NeXT's director of web marketing. "This is the first software product of its kind to graphically extend the client/server development paradigm to the Web. This new graphical development approach significantly reduces the learning curve and development effort required for building scalable web-based applications." Jump Start Web Application Development Today, most developers approach web application development by stringing together diverse technologies. They use HTML editors, visual programming environments and database modelers to address different aspects of the development process. WebObjects Enterprise's suite of development tools allows developers to graphically bring these pieces together resulting in a more cohesive and easier development paradigm. WebObjects Builder WebObjects Builder includes major productivity enhancements ranging from basic HTML editing to code-free database connectivity. Developers can start with HTML pages built with third party tools and then drag and drop client components such as HTML forms, ActiveX, Java, JavaScript, and VBScript into their web application. The developer then binds these client components to prebuilt objects on the server for database access and business logic. The prebuilt objects manage common database interactions with heterogeneous databases and perform robust business processing. Palettes are used to store reusable components complete with bindings to server-based business objects. WebObjects Builder includes many pre-built components, including Sun's Java AWT widgets. Customers can also add new components to palettes with a drag and drop capability. While many development tools include simple wizards to speed application development, WebObjects Builder extends wizard concepts to mentor developers during the entire development process. A point and click interface allows the user to select and model data from a database and then specify layout options within the application. Unlike other development tools where the wizard vanishes leaving the developer to maintain the rest of the application himself, WebObjects Builder continues to assist the user with further development and customization all the way to deployment. Database Modeler The Database Modeler creates and brings database schemas into the application server environment. With a simple point and click user interface, developers can assemble data from diverse sources and define the rules for the the dynamic creation of SQL. Project Builder Project Builder organizes aspects of project development. Developers can create and manage reusable objects with Project Builder editors, debuggers, and compilers or bring in objects from other products and existing applications. This results in a cohesive view of the application components. Interactive Clients WebObjects Enterprise 3.0 includes interactive client component support so users can communicate with the WebObjects application server and HTML page redisplay is not required. This allows for instant page updates and improved application responsiveness. In addition, developers can reuse existing Java applets or ActiveX Technologies. Applications will be much more efficient by doing some business logic processing on the client in addition to the server. WebObjects Enterprise 3.0 Standard Features The WebObjects product line offers a cross-platform and language independent development environment for delivering interactive, scalable, server-based web applications. WebObjects is designed to work with existing infrastructure enabling corporations to expand the reach of their systems to the Web without having to rewrite data and applications. WebObjects standard features include: -- Browser independent (Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, etc) -- Client language independence with support for HTML, Java Applets, JavaScript, and ActiveX Technologies -- Heterogeneous database support including Informix, Sybase, Oracle, and ODBC -- Enterprise application interoperability, with support for OLE, CORBA 2.0, Perl, C, C++, and Objective-C applications -- Standard web server support via NSAPI, ISAPI, and CGI -- Available on Windows NT, Solaris, and OPENSTEP/Mach platforms. In addition, WebObjects' localization support lets developers easily write WebObjects applications that support multiple languages and character sets (including Kanji) without rewriting portions of the application. This means that organizations can easily extend their website's reach around the globe. Pricing and Availability The WebObjects Enterprise 3.0 will begin shipping in early November. The WebObjects Builder, now in its production release, is available for Windows NT and will ship as part of WebObjects Enterprise 3.0. Applications built with WebObjects can be deployed on Windows NT, Solaris, and OPENSTEP/Mach platforms. WebObjects Enterprise 3.0 will be provided to customers with software maintenance contracts at no additional charge. Customers without software maintenance contracts can obtain WebObjects 3.0 for an upgrade fee of 25% of the WebObjects purchase price. WebObjects Enterprise development seats start at $4,999. There is a WWW page for ssh; see http://www.cs.hut.fi/ssh. ----------------------- snip ----------------------- >From the INSTALL notes of ssh: COMPILING WITH RSAREF2 If you are using ssh in the United States, you may want to use the RSAREF2 library from RSADSI. This may make it legal to use ssh without a separate license for non-commercial purposes. RSAREF2 is not included in the distribution; however, it is available on any major ftp site around the world (e.g., ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/crypt/cryptography/asymmetric/rsa/rsaref2.tar.gz). The RSAREF2 distribution should be unpacked into "rsaref2" subdirectory in the ssh distribution directory (a symbolic link to rsaref2 is not sufficient). Configure should be given the --with-rsaref option. (Note that there is no need to *compile* rsaref2 manually; the ssh Makefile will compile those files it needs.) Using RSAREF outside the United States is not recommended and only causes legal complications. RSAREF2 does not work for large key sizes (> 1024). This may be the problem if you get "RSAPrivateDecrypt failed".

The Antigone Digests are Internet mailing lists whose sole purpose is to provide people who lack access to Usenet with a daily digest of articles posted to certain Usenet newsgroups. Current newsgroups include all NeXT-related topics and some topics of interest to the Desktop Publishing and Pre-Press community. (A complete list of Antigone Digests can be found below.) The list processor in use at Best is a custom program, called Bestserv. Its syntax is based on the popular list server Majordomo. Previous subscribers to any Antigone Digests must re-subscribe in the manner described at the bottom of this notice. Antigone Press also offers a gateway for submitting articles to those Usenet newsgroups for which it provides Digests. Reference sites (WWW, Gopher, etc...) which maintain links to or mention Antigone Digests should be updated to the current information. From: rdieter@math.unl.edu (Rex Dieter) Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: gmp-2.0.2.pl2 Date: 29 Oct 1996 04:01:59 GMT Organization: University of Nebraska--Lincoln Message-ID: <553vjn$g81@news.digifix.com> I've uploaded a second (more successful) attempt at porting gmp-2.0.2. Included now is full HPPA support, and an update patch for nextstep compiling. Attached is the accompanying README. uploaded to: ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/submissions/ gmp-2.0.2.pl2.README gmp-2.0.2.pl2.generic.NIHS.tar.gz gmp-2.0.2.pl2.NIHS.tar.gz FYI, forthcoming will be another binary package for ssh-1.2.16 WITH HPPA support. Enjoy. ____ Rex A. It is a C library for doing arbitrary-precision mathematics. It also contains a Berkley-compatible libmp.a. This is a second attempt at a full NEXTSTEP port of gmp. It now contains support for hppa, and includes a patch, when applied to the original gmp-2.0.2 source, allows you to build gmp yourself. gmp-2.0.2.generic.NIHS.tar.gz: Includes a library built using portable (generic) C routines. This archive was easy to make (for me), but is not as fast as the optimized asm version (see below). gmp-2.0.2.NIHS.tar.gz Includes a library built using faster asm routines. This was more difficult, but I've finally finished the port. Included here is a patch to make gmp-2.0.2 compile successfully. NOTE: the patch has been forwarded to the author of gmp, and it's modifications will likely be incorporated into the next release of gmp. UPDATE: (October 28, 1996) HPPA NEWS Support for hppa is back. Short description DviInfo is a little tool for TeX/LaTeX users. It's main purpose is to inspect a selected dvi file and show/print some informations about it, as the number of pages, the page metrics and a list of used fonts. DviInfo.1.2.NI.b.tar.gz contains a prebuild NeXTstep app and additionally a plain Unix version (which can be used in a terminal) for NeXT and Intel platforms. DviInfo.1.2.s.tar.gz contains the full source code, so that Sun and HP users with an NS developer environment have the ability, to rebuld DviInfo 1.2 on their platforms. It's been tested only on the i386 platform, and many of the protocols are untested. Use at your own risk. OVERVIEW GateD is a modular software program consisting of core services, a routing database, and protocol modules supporting multiple routing protocols (RIP versions 1 and 2, DCN HELLO, OSPF version 2, EGP version 2 and BGP version 2 through 4.) GateD was first used to interconnect the NSFNET and the emerging regional networks, and to implement filtered routing based on policy. GateD allows the network administrator to control import and export of routing information by individual protocol, by source and destination autonomous system, source and destination interface, previous hop router, and specific destination address. The network administrator can specify a preference level for each combination of routing information being imported by using a flexible masking capability. Once the preference levels are assigned, GateD makes a decision on which route to use independent of the protocols involved. GateD is designed to handle dynamic routing with a routing database built from information exchanged by routing protocols. ____ Rex A.
