Running Start's extensible Request Resolution System provides full life-cycle tracking of requests from both internal and external sources. The system provides distributed access via client/server and the world-wide-web and is designed for use by an entire software engineering team. Possible uses of the system include tracking software defects, requirements change requests, customer support questions, and system administration issues. "Our system facilitates communication between all departments in an organization," said David Koski, Vice President of Running Start. "It allows everyone to be involved in the process and stay informed about the status of proposed changes." The Request Resolution System was developed to support the principles of continuous process improvement that are fundamental to quality management efforts. The system can be customized to fit the practices used by an organization instead of forcing the use of new procedures. Organizations can reduce costs by controlling change and monitoring its effects. "[RRS] will allow us to save time, money, and deliver a better product to our customers by providing an excellent solution for bug tracking and change request management." -- Daniel Green, First Chicago NBD Corporation Internet access to the requests is provided using NeXT Software's WebObjects technology. From: Charles William Swiger <cs4w+@andrew.cmu.edu> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: XNTP 3.5f for NEXTSTEP 3.3 (m68k) Date: 4 Sep 1996 19:48:10 GMT Organization: Fifth yr. senior, Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon, Pittsburgh, PA Message-ID: <50kmdq$58j@news.digifix.com> [ Note: The RTF version of this document is available after installing the XNTP package as /usr/local/XNTP/XNTP_README.rtf, and is more readable. Any errors in this are due to rtf2ascii. :-) ] XNTP Version 3.5f for NEXTSTEP 3.3/m68k Contained in this document: 1... Introduction 2... Installation procedure 3... Package notes and my contact information 4... Copyright 1 Introduction This distribution contains a precompiled version of XNTP. XNTP is used to syncronize the clocks one or more computers. Since XNTP is highly hardware dependent, this version is for m68k hardware running NEXTSTEP 3.3 only. It may work with other releases of NEXTSTEP, but I make no promises. 2 Installation procedure The package consists of a set of executables that reside in /usr/local/bin and man pages which go in /usr/local/man/man8. The package also creates a /usr/local/XNTP directory which contains a sample ntp.conf file, changes that should be made to /etc/rc.local, the original README and COPYRIGHT documents, an HTML version of the documentation, and a .me and ASCII version of the Notes file. file://usr/local/XNTP/html/index.html is a good place to start. This package must be installed as root. If you don't have a /usr/local tree, Installer.app will make one, although you should double-check the permissions. Install the package in '/usr/local' (I've built the package to not be relocatable, so go with it). You then need to create an appropriate /etc/ntp.conf configuration file. Check out my example, and read the docs and find local timeservers that you have permission to use. Finally, you need to change /etc/rc.local to resemble this: # Adjust the kernel's timekeeping values to better compensate for the clock # and for running NTP. (echo 'Adjusting clock.') >/dev/console /usr/local/bin/tickadj -A #/usr/local/bin/tickadj -a 8 -t 15627 -s (echo -n 'local daemons:') >/dev/console # start up the XNTP daemon /usr/local/bin/xntpd > /dev/console 2>&1 (echo -n ' xntpd') >/dev/console I've measured the implicit clock drift of my machine to come up with the adjustment above (the line with "-a 8 -t 15627 -s"). You can read the docs to figure out how to compute your own numbers, or you can run with mine. I've heard that the clocks on black hardware tend to run slow because the system can lose clock interrupts while dealing with a higher-priority interrupt. Good luck. 3 Package notes and my contact information This package was compiled under NEXTSTEP 3.3pl1 using gcc 2.7.2 on August 13, 1996 by Charles Swiger. I hope that using gcc instead of NeXT's cc will improve portability-- let me know if this package works for other versions of NEXTSTEP. You can reach me via NeXTmail or MIME to <chuck@tertius.res.cmu.edu>, or to <cs4w+@andrew.cmu.edu> (ASCII-only, please) if the former address fails for some reason. file://usr/local/XNTP/notes.txt was created using gnroff and is intended to be read via less in a terminal window; use "nroff -me notes.me > notes.ascii" to create a plain ASCII version. 4 Copyright Here is the original copyright; consult file://usr/local/XNTP/COPYRIGHT.html for the complete document in HTML format. /*********************************************************************** * * * Copyright (c) David L. Many developers are reluctant to use objects which are under the GNU "Copyleft". As a result, the MiscKit has its own license which allows developers to reuse the code freely, even in commercial projects. Everything possible has been done to encourage the use of the MiscKit to speed development efforts. Any developer who has generally useful objects, palettes, or other programming resources and would like to donate them to the MiscKit effort is welcome to do so. Contact Don Yacktman at don@misckit.com for information on how to prepare a MiscKit submission. By making a submission to the MiscKit, a developer can avoid the hassles of packaging up a formal distribution of their resources and in turn help add to a growing centralized pool of useful resources. The misckit mailing lists are temporarily out of order and we hope to have them up and working at a new site soon. Until then, inquiries and subscription requests should be made to don@misckit.com. If you request a subscription, be sure to specify whether you wish to be part of the development discussion or only receive MiscKit-based press releases. When the mailing lists are once again up and running, a press release will be sent out to and let everyone know about the changes in addresses and any other important details. Please note that the creation of the "misckit.com" domain does NOT mean that the MiscKit is "going commercial" in any way--it will always be free and open as it has been in the past. This is primarily a "bug fix" of the document. While there were no known errors in the previous version, I felt like some things could be explained better, expanded upon, etc. The main purpose for this release is because it is now available in HTML format (http://www.nerc.com/~luomat/next/swapfaq.html). This release also comes in a few different formats: PS RTF ASCII This release is also available via email-autoresponder, in either ASCII, RTF, or PS format (note: if you are going to request the file be sent to you via ASCII, make sure you ONLY request the ASCII version. I don't think the others would work.) The files are: swapfaq.ps swapfaq.rtf swapfaq.txt the commands (to be used in the SUBJECT) are: send-ascii FILE (note: Again, this should only be used to request the FILE 'swapfaq.txt') send-mime FILE send-nextmail FILE (note: There may be a delay is responding to request for NeXTMail) ie: send-mime swapfaq.ps would get the file 'swapfaq.ps' sent to you by return mail. From: felix@nice.usergroup.ethz.ch (Felix Rauch) Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: FileSpy 1.0 Date: 9 Sep 1996 20:26:57 GMT Organization: NiCE - NeXT User Group, Zuerich, Switzerland Message-ID: <511uih$oh8@news.digifix.com> I have uploaded my application "FileSpy" to the Peanuts ftp-archive. FileSpy helps you keep track of the contents of your log- and lock-files, such as /tmp/console.log, /usr/adm/messages or /usr/spool/uucp/LCK/LCK..cufa. It allows you to use a filter, so you don't have to read uninteresting log-entries. If you wish so, it pops automatically up when one of the files changes, so you don't have to waste space on your screen for a Console-window. For more features and details, please see below. FileSpy is available from: ftp://peanuts.leo.org/pub/comp/platforms/next/Tools/workspace/ There are the following files: FileSpy.1.0.NIHS.b.tar.gz (binaries for all Platforms) FileSpy.1.0.NIHS.s.tar.gz (sources) FileSpy.README (README) BUGS: Some betatesters have reported that FileSpy sometimes crashes, but I have not yet been able to reproduce the bug. On my machine, it runs all the time when I'm logged in and I don't have any crashes. Your mileage may, and probably will, vary. The current version and some older versions have been tested on NEXTSTEP 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3, as well as on NeXT-, intel-, hppa- and sparc-computers. The newest Version of FileSpy is always available from: ftp://nice.ethz.ch/users/felix/ Don't expect too frequent updates. Here are some excerpts from the README-file: 0. Introduction FileSpy has many advantages: - It's free, so you don't have to pay anything for it. - It comes with full source code, so you may improve or debug it, if you wish to do so. - It seems to work. I like it and use it whenever I'm working on my NeXT. So do some of my collegues, which means it does a good job for us. However, it has also some disadvantages: - It's free, so you won't get support for it. - It comes with full source code, but the source is ugly. I started this programm two years ago, when I knew much less about how to make a good programm, without having a clear project or even design. Over the years, I inserted code wherever I felt it would be a good idea to do so. This resulted in ugly code and not so well designed objects. Please do not look at this programm as an example of how to do things. - It seems to work. As I explained above, FileSpy is a really useful and working application for me and some other people. For you it may be a buggy and completely useless collection of bits. 1. Copying, warranty and legal stuff For most people, this program underlies the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE. However, there are special restrictions for people having to do with nuclear weapons. See the file CONDITIONS for details. THE PROGRAM IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. For more details about terms and conditions about copying, distribution and modification see the file COPYING. This product includes software developed by Rich Salz, i.e. the wildmat-routine. 2. Features This is a short list what FileSpy does. For more detailed help, see chapter 4. Using FileSpy. FileSpy helps you monitor your log- and lock-files such as /usr/adm/messages, /tmp/console.log, /usr/spool/uucp/Log, /usr/spool/uucp/LCK/LCK..cufa and similar ones. It lets you do the following things: - Select as many log- or lockfiles as you want and pop up a window as soon as something happens to to these files. These means when: Something is appended to them; they're removed or created; they're no longer accessible; they reduce their sizes (in this case, FileSpy of course can't show you any new text, so it just prints a message on the console that the file reduced its size). - Have one window for each observed file or log everything in one central Multilog-window. Files may have different colors to be quickly identified in the multilog or their names may be printed each time they log something or just when a different file starts to print its output to the multilog. You may also print timestamps when something is logged. - Use a filter to strip out non-interesting messages. The filter allows the use of wildcards, as well as for the logged texts as for the filenames to which the filter should be applied. - List lockfiles in a Existencelog-window to find out quickly which lockfiles currently exist and which don't. You may also print the time how long a lockfile existed. I hope some of you can use it. - Felix -- Felix Rauch, CS-Student @ ETH Zurich, Switzerland. internet: felix@nice.ch (NeXT Mail welcome) For pgp public key finger felix.pgp@nice.ethz.ch

From: Olaf Mueller <orest.escape.de!olaf@oker.escape.de> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: newam-0.1 (Another AnsweringMachine for ZyXEL modems) Date: 10 Sep 1996 04:13:20 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <512pt0$qsl@news.digifix.com> The administrator of the peanuts archive told me, that my new answering machine for Zyxel modems is available now at ftp://peanuts.leo.org/pub/comp/platforms/next/Unix/communication/newam-0.1????? (He did not told me the complete path, sorry.) Here an extract of the README: This Answering Machine (receiving voice and fax) based on "am.1.16" found on the peanuts archive. It was completely rewritten because it did not work in some (for me) important points. These are: Zyxel voice <--> NeXT sound did not work on my Intel machine. UUCP did never work when the old am was running. Following improvements were made: o In case of you took off the receiver and - what a surprise - a fax is coming, you are now able to make a switch to persuade the modem to take the line for handling this event. o eMail service has been implemented. Incoming calls or faxes can be listened to or read in the mail box. o Class2 protocol implemented for receiving faxes. Code not only is more robust compared with ZyXEL's internal protocol 6 (which was used by the old "am"), but also there is a chance for an easy porting of am to a lot of other modems. o am and UUCP are friends now. Any software using the same port as am, and which locks the port, can do its work without any troubles. o am can now be configured _after_ compiling using e.g. the configuration file ".am" o Additionally, there is a small NeXTSTEP application ("Dial") for dialing a number you coded in one of your "AddressBook"'s. Sorry for nearly no documentation or help for this application (it's only a concept). The following things do NOT work: o Incoming data calls are not handled. This is, because I currently don't need this feature. But it should be easy to implement. If someone will do it, do it, and send me the code for maintaining. o Only ZyXEL modem U-1496EG+ is supported. This is because I have only this modem. If there is someone with another modem with voice capabilities, port it, and send me the code for maintaining. o sending faxes If someone can tell me how to use /usr/lib/NextPrinter/libFaxD.a and the other stuff, I will implement it. Here are the reasons why: (1) Corporate developers look for serious improvements over their existing tools and are finding those improvements with OpenGraph. (2) Upgrading their existing graphing and data display tools to OpenStep proves to be more cost effective with OpenGraph. (3) VVI-DCS (the makers of OpenGraph) have historically provided substantial improvements with every new release of OpenGraph, our track record speaks for itself. Corporate developers value this and know we are committed to continuing this trend. OpenGraph for NEXTSTEP(TM) has been available for years. For current specifications on OpenGraph for OpenStep contact VVI-DCS directly. Information for students: For the first time ever, OpenGraph will soon be available with a special student license and price. Please send e-mail to graphing@mttam.com with any inquiries. _______________________________________________________________ OPENGRAPH FACTS: 1) OpenGraph is used to track and purchase billions of dollars ($US) of securities, is used to monitor engineering processes worth 100's of millions of dollars ($US) and is used throughout the world by Fortune 500 companies. 2) OpenGraph's object based framework was designed by experts, tested at the largest NEXTSTEP sites, and is used by corporate developers driven to produce proprietary world-class data reporting applications that run 24 hours a day in real-time. 3) OpenGraph has a published, well documented and open API. The OpenGraph documentation is extensive and includes many source code examples of real-world and real-time data reporting applications. OpenGraph updates and ports to the newest computers are provided regularly. 4) The upcoming version of OpenGraph incorporates an open and well defined document storage system and scripting language which is forward and backward compatible, person readable and modifiable, is compatible with 3d party developers' extensions, is extensible, is sturdy enough to transcend all versions of OpenStep, and (our hallmark) parses efficiently and in real-time. WHAT INDUSTRY EXPERTS THINK: OpenGraph on NEXTSTEP has won praise from corporate developers who say "OpenGraph...": "...speeds development time", "...makes data reporting applications thought to be impossible become practical", "...is the best data reporting solution, regardless of operating system", "...provides the right kind and level of API and features", "...yields a powerful application that produces results far above the norm for our industry", and as an IEEE editor (who wrote a feature article on visualization) puts it: "OpenGraph is a price break through ... real value ... full of features I have never seen before, ... I want it for my home computer...", and as one NeXT Software, Inc. manager puts it: "OpenGraph is the premium graphing solution for NEXTSTEP ... for customers that need power graphs ...". and the quotes go on and on throughout years of use in critical productions situations where OpenGraph is used to report data representing billions of dollars worth of products throughout the world. _________________________________ (c) Copyright 1996 VVimaging, Inc. NEXTVegas is a casino-simulation game with dynamically loading game modules including Blackjack and Craps. This version fixes a few bugs and adds color to the game. NEXTVegas comes with six game modules (Baccarat, Blackjack, Craps, Klondike, Red Dog, and Video Poker). Hopefully, there will be more modules available in the future... NEXTVegas is available by anonymous ftp at: ftp://wendy.ucsd.edu/pub/Mark/NEXTVegas3.0.NI.tar.Z And should also be available at: ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/submissions/NEXTVegas3.0.NI.tar.Z And later... ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/binaries/games/NEXTVegas3.0.NI.tar.Z NEXTVegas requires NEXTSTEP version 3.0 or later. The binary distribution is compiled for both Motorola and Intel hardware and takes up about 4.76 MB of disk space. Finally! However, since I don't have a color machine and had to sneak on to a color NeXT machine, I'm not all together sure that I did an okay job here. Things may have looked okay in color but strange in B&W, or vice versa.... Video Poker BUG FIX: Cashing out adds proper amount to player files (w/ respect to coin values.) [thanks to Matthew N. Reichman for the report] * Displays coins played even after game finishes. * Displays "Coins Deposited" while player deposits coins. * Payout grid on screen highlights the column representing the number of coins played. * Incomplete colorization here. Sorry. It looks fine in B&W but probably a little screwy in color. Klondike * Changed game options so that you can have 1 pass while drawing 1 card at a time, and 3 passes while drawing three cards at a time. [thanks Brian Keeley for the suggestion] * You can double click on a card or sets of cards and Klondike will automatically move them to a better spot for you. (i.e., if you have a black nine and a red ten open, double clicking on the black nine will automatically move it over to the red ten.) * You can't keep playing after you remove your winnings. End of game. It is my goal to write more modules for the game, and I encourage others to do the same. Texas Hold 'em, Pai Gao anyone? Please check out the game and let me know what you think. Any and all feedback is appreciated! Mark Trombino trombino@wendy.ucsd.edu Legal Disclaimer: NEXTVegas is intended for amusement only!

STEPWISE - http://www.stepwise.com/ Stepwise is now running at http://www.stepwise.com/ and not at the oft used http://digifix.digifix.com/. I've been trying for 2 years now to get people to use the www.stepwise.com address, yet I'm sure there are still old URLs out there. Please update your bookmarks! Comp.sys.next.announce stuff When the Quantum Empire 1080S died and took all my user directory with it, and then the backup tapes wouldn't load, I lost a large chunk of my personal code. Some of this loss has effected comp.sys.next.announce, and I want to point them out. These changes should not be construed as a lesser commitment with regards to NeXT or NEXTSTEP. Unfortunately its just a fact that somethings were lots and I don't have the time to re-write them. Weekly Summaries The summary generation software that I had written was on that drive. This was the code that summarized what was posted in the last week and made the correct HTML links for it. Its gone. Unless by some miracle I can get these tapes to read, its gone for good. I will be re-writing this code in the next few weeks, but the link generation stuff is gone for good. Its more specialized than I have the time available for right now. Weekly NeXT on the Internet FAQ This script is also gone. I can probably retreive the FAQ itself from Dejanews. I am in desperate need of a replacement version of this for many different groups, so I hope to have that done real soon now. DSApproved.app Sigh, this one hurts. DSApproved is the custom NEXTSTEP front end that I wrote for handling the moderation of comp.sys.next.announce. I still have the source, but I've moved to an Intel machine and DSApproved was built on the Dolphin Kit. Since Dolphin is gone, and I don't have the DolphinKit source, I'll not be using this for moderation anymore. The DolphinKit included a _very_ useful class for communicating with Unix processes that I had much success with back when I wrote this software. If I could find something this good now, or a class library that talks with NNTP servers I'd probably re-write it. I've written a quick TickleService that works with Mail.app and Perl 5 that generates approved headers and then posts the submissions. It works, but there is no quick way to have the SUBMISSION: JOB: PRESS RELEASE: field tacked on. I hand edit them when I remember, but I'll need to hack on it more to make a TS panel come up with a pop-up. If you remember to put it in, it'll be there for sure. comp-sys-next-announce Auto-Acknowledgement The procmail script that does this is gone. I'll re-implement as soon as I can get to it. If you happen to have one of the acknowledgement notes in a mailbox somewhere, please return it to me, as that verbage will likely be the real problem to come up with. So thats were things stand for the most part. I'm still here, still working on NEXTSTEP, WebObjects and related work. From: Pascal Leroy <phl@rational.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: timezones96.tar.gz -- Support for the new regulations about daylight savings time Date: 22 Sep 1996 05:10:09 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <R.522hnh$ajm@news.digifix.com> Reposting article removed by rogue canceller. Many countries in western Europe (including the European Union) follow new regulations this year regarding daylight savings time: daylight savings time ends on October 27th, not on September 29th as it would have with the old rule. As a consequence, if you don't take any corrective action, your favorite computer will be off by one hour between October 27th and September 29th. timezones96.tar.gz is a small package that I put together using the extensive timezone data gathered by Arthur David Olson (arthur_david_olson@nih.gov). These files define the time rules for more than 350 locations worldwide, extending as far back as the 19th century! In addition to compiling quad-fat the executables for the zic and zdump, I have written a region dictionary mapping the timezones to the geographical areas known by the Time module of Preferences.app, so Preferences.app is still usable with this new set of time zone files. timezones96.tar.gz had been put in: ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/submissions It should ultimately move to: ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/binaries/misc Disclaimer: This package has been developed and tested on NEXTSTEP 3.3 running on black hardware. My guess is that it should run on other architectures running 3.3. It may or may not work on 3.[012] or 4.0. In particular, I seem to remember that the definition of timezones in Preferences.app has changed in the past (maybe in 3.2 or 3.3). Pascal Leroy pleroy@rational.com

Xedoc believe that there may be market interest in such a product, both for sites migrating from NEXTSTEP to OPENSTEP for NT, and for sites seeking an administrative solution more scaleable than Microsoft's own. Because of the significant technical challenges involved in bringing such a product to market, Xedoc are keen to determine the market demand for such a product before committing to further development. NetInfo editions simplify system administration across a UNIX network, and are a complete, more scalable replacement for NIS. Topics we plan to address: o SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT UNDER OPENSTEP (1): Introduction to object-oriented programming with Objective-C (first part in a series of bi-monthly lectures on programming under NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP we project) o PRESENTATION OF THE LATEST (AUTUMN) ISSUE OF "NEXTTOYOU" Straight from the printing press: the latest issue of the quarterly German NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP newsletter "NEXTTOYOU" The meeting is open to anyone who is interested in NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP. "newbies" or people seeking for more first hand information before they further engage with NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP, are very welcome, too. Attendants will have the opportunity to subscribe to the "NEXTTOYOU" for a special BeNG pricing (> 30% savings!) and pick up their first issue right on the meeting. After the program, join us for a snack and/or drink at the nearby "Cafe Campus". Looking forward to seeing you at the meeting! Contact: Gerald Erdmann gerald@kurt.in-berlin.de (NeXTmail welcome) or Ingmar Camphausen ingmar@aurora.in-berlin.de (NeXTmail welcome) BeNG: e-mail beng@buran.fb10.tu-berlin.de (mailinglist!) WWW http://buran.fb10.tu-berlin.de/~beng FTP ftp://ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de/pub/NeXT How to get there: We recommend coming by bicycle or using the public transport: You can either take the underground line U2 or bus 145 or bus X9 and leave at 'Ernst-Reuter-Platz', or you chose bus 245 up to Ernst-Reuter-Platz/Marchst. There is a limited number of parking lots near the building, too. If you approach from the roundabout traffic Ernst-Reuter-Platz, you have to take the Marchstr. exit. About 200 m into the Marchstr., right after a blue building and the drive to a parking lot on the right hand side, there is the "Institut fuer Energietechnik". The entrance to the building is on the left hand side behind the gate at the end of the parking lot. (Watch out for the NeXT logo-like 'BeNG' signs and follow them to the meeting room! :-) All those of you familiar with the geography of Berlin (Germany) can take a look at a map of the meeting location and its environment via the StadtINFO online city map under the URL http://www.kulturbox.de/cgi-bin/k/pixelinfo?PQ=m11&X=96&Y=381&TEXT=BeNG%21 (The "Institut fuer Energietechnik" is marked with a red circle.) . . . The subsequent meeting takes place on November 4, 1996. We plan for several software tests, including a comparison between the latest versions of OmniWeb and Netsurfer(tm). (The second part of our series of lectures on 'Software development under OPENSTEP' is to be held on our meeting on December, 2nd, 1996.)
