(for example) ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/submissions/file.tar.gz Please try and give an indication of where you expect the file will end up on the archive site, in the same notation. Cross Posting ============= I try very hard to make sure that postings get out in a timely fashion. Most go out in less than 24 hours. Postings that require editing because they do not contain information in a useable format, or have already been posted to other comp.sys.next.* groups may be delayed, or returned to you. If your posting is rejected, I'll try and make suggestions about what should be changed where possible. Obviously off charter messages (spams, open-letters, etc) may not get a response. Content Guidelines ================== Try to keep submissions short and concise (80-100 lines max). Include full instructions on contacting you (where applicable) All Postings e-mail address, telephone (optional) Press Release toll-free voice phone, toll-free fax, voice phone, fax phone mailing address,info@blahblah.com,retail price, educational price availability Software available ftp site full path to file _IN URL FORMAT_ supported CPU's for binary distributions, OS version requirements Meeting Announcements location of meeting, time of meeting, speakers expected Signatures will be deleted automatically, so please don't rely on your .sig for the contact information Please double check all information you are posting for accuracy. If you are announcing software available by FTP, make sure the copy on the archive site is good. Announcement of Product Sales ============================= This is an area of announcement that has caused me terrible grief in recent months. The policy is tilted towards the ISV, which has worked out well in the past. Posts that announce sales of products that you are DIRECTLY involved in the development of are OK. Posts from companies trying to sell other products are evaluated on an individual basis. Time Sensitive Announcements ============================ Many times an announcement should coincide with a specific date. Unfortunately, that can be the worst time for you to get access to your internet connection to send the announcements to comp.sys.next.announce. In order to make comp.sys.next.announce as timely as possible, I will accept "post-dated" announcements for release on a specific future date. All information will be kept confidential until the requested release date, and NDAs will be signed where required to ensure this. Hopefully this will make these announcements arrive at users sites as quickly as if you posted them directly to comp.sys.next.whatever. Submissions can be sent to next-announce@digifix.com. This system allows you to request online technical documents, drivers, and other software, which are then sent to you automatically. You can request documents by fax or Internet electronic mail, read them on the world-wide web, transfer them by anonymous ftp, or download them from the BBS. NeXTanswers is an automated retrieval system. Requests sent to it are answered electronically, and are not read or handled by a human being. NeXTanswers does not answer your questions or forward your requests. USING NEXTANSWERS BY E-MAIL To use NeXTanswers by Internet e-mail, send requests to nextanswers@next.com. Files are sent as NeXTmail attachments by default; you can request they be sent as ASCII text files instead. To request a file, include that file's ID number in the Subject line or the body of the message. You can request several files in a single message. You can also include commands in the Subject line or the body of the message. These commands affect the way that files you request are sent: ASCII causes the requested files to be sent as ASCII text SPLIT splits large files into 95KB chunks, using the MIME Message/Partial specification REPLY-TO address sets the e-mail address NeXTanswers uses These commands return information about the NeXTanswers system: HELP returns this help file INDEX returns the list of all available files INDEX BY DATE returns the list of files, sorted newest to oldest SEARCH keywords lists all files that contain all the keywords you list (ignoring capitalization) For example, a message with the following Subject line requests three files: Subject: 2101 2234 1109 A message with this body requests the same three files be sent as ASCII text files: 2101 2234 1109 ascii This message requests two lists of files, one for each search: Subject: SEARCH Dell SCSI SEARCH NetInfo domain NeXTanswers will reply to the address in your From: line. To use a different address either set your Reply-To: line, or use the NeXTanswers command REPLY-TO <your-address> If you have any problem with the system or suggestions for improvement, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY FAX To use NeXTanswers by fax, call (415) 780-3990 from a touch-tone phone and follow the instructions. You'll be asked for your fax number, a number to identify your fax (like your phone extension or office number), and the ID numbers of the files you want. You can also request a list of available files. When you finish entering the file numbers, end the call and the files will be faxed to you. If you have problems using this fax system, please call Technical Support at 1-800-848-6398. You cannot use the fax system outside the U.S & Canada. USING NEXTANSWERS VIA THE WORLD-WIDE WEB To use NeXTanswers via the Internet World-Wide Web connect to NeXT's web server at URL http://www.next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY ANONYMOUS FTP To use NeXTanswers by Internet anonymous FTP, connect to FTP.NEXT.COM and read the help file pub/NeXTanswers/README. If you have problems using this, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY MODEM To use NeXTanswers via modem call the NeXTanswers BBS at (415) 780-2965. Log in as the user "guest", and enter the Files section. From there you can download NeXTanswers documents. FOR MORE HELP... If you need technical support for NEXTSTEP beyond the information available from NeXTanswers, call the Support Hotline at 1-800-955-NeXT (outside the U.S. call +1-415-424-8500) to speak to a NEXTSTEP Technical Support Technician. If your site has a NeXT support contract, your site's support contact must make this call to the hotline. Otherwise, hotline support is on a pay-per-call basis. Thanks for using NeXTanswers! From: john@targetdev.com Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: Target Development Announces beta Release 3.1 of RetrieverPalette for OpenStep (EOF 1.2) Date: 3 Aug 1996 02:47:18 -0400 Organization: Next Announcements Sender: sanguish@digifix.com Message-ID: <4tuslm$c1r@digifix.digifix.com> News: For Immediate Release Contact: John Yanefski Target Development Phone: (717) 399.9550 Fax: (717) 399.9551 email: john@targetdev.com Target Development Announces beta Release 3.1 of RetrieverPalette for OpenStep (EOF 1.2) LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA - August 1, 1996. Target Development announces the beta 3.1 release of the RetrieverPalette for OpenStep and the Enterprise Objects Framework (version 1.2). The RetrieverPalette is a collection of objects that provides a simple interface for constructing and managing EOQualifiers. Using the palette, even complex, nested qualifiers can be built graphically in Interface Builder. The real power of the palette is in its ability to use UI objects for runtime query values. The palette supports connections to NSTextFields, NSPopUpButtons, NSButtons, NSBrowsers, NSTableColumns, and EOControllers, allowing ad-hoc query panels to be instantly added into any EOF application. The palette can use any of these objects to supply it with query values at runtime. Further, the palette supports archiving of values from these UI objects, allowing queries constructed at runtime to be saved and retrieved from the file system. A date licensed version of the palette (good through August 31st) is available via ftp or directly from Target Development. Extended demo license keys should be obtained directly from Target Development. The product includes the palette, headers, libraries, technical documentation, and two demo applications. One of the demo applications includes a palettized FileWell object that is used to drag-and-drop qualifier representations to and from the application. Install scripts and EOModels are available for Sybase, Oracle, Informix, and QuickBase. The palette retails for $595.00 per developer seat. No runtime fees apply. Educational, site, and source licenses are also available. This product will be available for EOF 2.0 in Q3, 1996. Please send us email if you are interested in beta testing the EOF 2.0 product. The palette is available via ftp from : ftp://ftp.stepwise.com/pub/Vendors/Target_Development/OpenStep/RetrieverPalette Installation_README.rtfd.tar.gz RetrieverPalette.pkg.tar.gz Also, check out our WWW pages at: http://stepwise.com/Developers/Target_Development The palette is compiled for Intel, Motorola, Sparc and HP-PA. If you do not have ftp access, date-licensed demo versions can be obtained by sending email to objects@targetdev.com. Target Development is a Pennsylvania-based object-oriented solutions company, specializing in database productivity objects for NeXTSTEP / OpenStep. We are currently shipping object palettes for the DatabaseKit, AccessKit, and the EOF, as well as completing a suite of NeXTSTEP applications for self administered managed care. Interested persons should contact us by phone at (717) 399-9550, fax at (717) 399-9551, or email to objects@targetdev.com. Perhaps you, or someone in your organization, would be interested in coming to the class. Advanced NetInfo covers: - How servers bind to parents. - How clients connect to servers. - Special properties in the NetInfo domain. - lookupd's role and operation. - The NetInfo and NetInfoBind protocols. - Examining packets on the network. - Updates and update propagation. The class combines lectures, discussions, and small-group exercises. As a prerequisite, we recommend having attended the NEXTSTEP System Administration class, and having at least six months' experience managing a medium-to-large NetInfo network. We also expect a basic familiarity with the IP protocol suite, including TCP and UDP. Price for the class: $1,575. Advanced NetInfo is offered only infrequently. It is highly recommended for people with appropriate background who are managing medium- to large-scale NetInfo networks. The class helps you solidify your understanding of Netinfo, improves your ability to manage large NetInfo networks, and helps decrease the amount of time you'll need to diagnose and fix problems. For more information, see http://www.next.com/Services/Training/OpenEnroll/Adv_NI.html The datasheet for the class is available at http://www.NeXT.COM/~amarcum/AdvNI.ps To register for the class, please call us at 800-Try-NeXT (800-879-6398), or +1-415-780-2922. Please note: you absolutely need gcc 2.7.2 and libg++ 2.7.2 installed to compile the sources; NeXT's outdated compiler won't work. I can only provide the accompanying i386 binaries, since I don't have access to gcc 2.7.2 on m68k or HPPA. SPARC owners beware: I heard that gcc 2.7.2 won't compile properly on NS-3.3 SPARC. Bug NeXT for a working developer environment! The precompiled binaries have successfully passed the test suite; see the ./bin/ directory. Feel free to simply move them somewhere else. From: Pedja Bogdanovich <pedja@TipTop.COM> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: TipTop Software Introduces WOPerl Date: 12 Aug 1996 17:00:14 -0400 Organization: Next Announcements Sender: sanguish@digifix.com Message-ID: <4uo60u$flb@digifix.digifix.com> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TipTop Software Introduces WOPerl ================================= Bethesda, Maryland, August 12, 1996 --- Today TipTop Software announced that the FREE evaluation version of WOPerl is publicly available! WOPerl is a WebObjects add-on which seamlessly integrates Perl with WebObjects from NeXT Software, Inc. WOPerl is based on the multi-language facilities of the Objective-Framework technology from TipTop Software. This technology enables developers to use the best language for the task at hand, and also to directly mix-and-match languages. WOPerl brings this powerful concept into the WebObjects framework. "We are excited to make the WOPerl technology widely available" said Pedja Bogdanovich, President of TipTop Software. "NeXT's WebObjects is a server-based development environment for rapidly creating dynamic applications for the Web. Perl is the language of the Web. WOPerl augments WebObjects with the power of Perl, and brings the best of two worlds together!" "WOPerl extends the NeXT WebObjects framework so that it can be programmed in one of the most popular Web languages today" said John Landwehr, WebObjects Product Manager at NeXT Software Inc. "WOPerl complements WebObjects beautifully with the power needed to make it the preeminent web development tool available today." WOPerl enables you to integrate Perl-based applications with WebObjects and this way to take advantage of a complete, superior Web development environment (WebObjects with WOPerl), while reusing already existing Perl, C, and C++ code. For current WebObjects developers, WOPerl brings you the power and flexibility of the Perl language while providing completely seamless interoperability with the rest of the WebObjects system. For example, in your Web applications you can transparently mix Perl, Objective-C, and WebScript-implemented web components. In WebObjects with WOPerl, you can not only use any Perl-provided functionality (e.g., use networking Perl modules, interprocess communication modules, database interface modules, text processing modules, web-related modules, OLE automation extension module on Windows NT, etc.), but you can also use all NeXT-provided functionality (e.g., PDO, DOLE, EOF), as well as functionalities from your own class libraries! The FREE evaluation version of WOPerl can be used through January 1, 1997. It runs with WebObjects version 2.0 Lite, Pro, and Enterprise under Windows NT, Solaris, and NEXTSTEP. TipTop Software is also pleased to offer WOPerl with WebObjects bundles as a one stop shopping convenience. From: Matthew D Waters <matthew@pswtech.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: PSW Technologies' Genova Reduces Deployment Risk for Object-Oriented Systems Date: 12 Aug 1996 17:04:00 -0400 Organization: Next Announcements Sender: sanguish@digifix.com Message-ID: <4uo680$fns@digifix.digifix.com> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Matthew Waters PSW Technologies 512 343 6666 matthew@pswtech.com OO Methodology and Libraries Achieve 80 Percent Reuse PSW Technologies' Genova Reduces Deployment Risk for Object-Oriented Systems August 12, 1996, Austin, Texas -- With the announcement today of PSW Technologies Genova (tm) methodology and object libraries, companies can speed deployment and reduce risk in their object-oriented development projects and achieve up to 80 code percent reuse. These results, says PSW Technologies, are what OO technology has been leading to since its infancy, but has been largely unable to deliver. Genova is a documented collection of best practices and highly refined object libraries, which are the result of object-oriented development work carried out by PSW Technologies over the past six years. "For our customers the business case for Genova is very clear: Get the benefits of custom business systems at the cost, schedule and risk levels of packaged solutions," said Frank King, president of PSW Technologies. Achieving 80 Percent Code Reuse "Using the Genova methodology we are achieving 80 percent code reuse for our biggest client to date," said Mike McCown, product manager at PSW Technologies. "The methodology allows us to design a highly reusable object architecture by identifying the core business objects during the analysis phase." This 27-application system, built for a major wholesale distribution company, will be deployed in several months, essentially transforming their IS infrastructure. The project to abandon the mainframe in favor of a distributed object architecture took just over two years to complete. Much of the work was captured by PSW Technologies in what has now become its Genova methodology and object libraries. PSW Technologies has found that new applications can be completed from a requirements specification in less than three months once the architecture and core business objects are in place. Besides reducing development time, object-oriented systems can be more quickly extended and changed to meet new business needs. "We are committed to object technology because we believe it's the only way to keep our information systems current with the rapid changes to our business," said Chris Redlich, owner of the Redwood City, Calif. based Marine Terminals Corp. "We chose PSW Technologies because they have the experience, methodology and software assets to turn object technology into the systems we need to grow our business." Object Libraries Offer Ready-Made OO Applications PSW Technologies itself is achieving "reuse" by licensing business system implementations from its clients and using this software to accelerate the development of systems for other clients. The Genova object libraries currently represent more than $10 million in development effort. The Genova licensing arrangements benefit all parties. Those licensing software to PSW Technologies receive royalties and enhancements to the licensed software free of charge. Companies licensing the software from PSW Technologies do so on a source code basis and get the benefits of a custom business system at reduced cost, schedule and risk. Genova's system object library provides a set of reusable components which extend NeXT Software's Object Framework. Components include an application framework, user interface, security, printing, agents to external systems and extensions for OpenStep and Oracle. PSW Technologies also plans to expand the libraries for use in OMG's CORBA and Microsoft's DCOM environments. "By licensing Genova's System Object Libraries we'll not only benefit from previous development work, but we'll pay far less to maintain and enhance our systems because the libraries are shared among multiple licensees," said Bob Verret, president of Embarcadero Systems Corp., the independent provider of systems solutions to Marine Terminals. Using the Genova Business Object Libraries, any company needing order management, purchasing, billing and EDI can take advantage of these complete application systems. Core business objects within the library include customers, products, invoices and purchase orders. Using Genova The process-driven Genova methodology is made up of iterative phases which capture the lifecycle of a typical OO project. The phases include requirements-gathering, analysis, design, development and three levels of pre-deployment testing. "PSW Technologies' approach to developing business systems fully embraces the object-oriented paradigm and tools such as NeXT Software's OpenStep and WebObjects." said Scott Abel, NeXT Software's director of engineering services in North America. "We recommend Genova to clients who are seeking a proven methodology for developing object-oriented business systems". The methodology specification, called Genova OnLine, is provided in HTML format for access on the World Wide Web. Genova OnLine includes a description of each phase, entry and exit criteria, deliverables, templates, tips, and samples. The Genova Academy provides training on the methodology both to PSW Technologies software engineers as well as client personnel. Clients licensing the technology can also license the Genova Academy courseware. PSW Technologies is a $30 million, privately held software services company based in Austin, Texas. It has two primary businesses: one which helps large technology vendors develop, port and test new products, and a second which helps large end-users build OO and other distributed business systems. Submissions should be e-mailed to next-announce@digifix.com where the moderator (Scott Anguish) will screen them for suitability. Archives are available by ftp at ftp://ftp.stepwise.com/pub/Next_Announce_Archives Messages posted to announce should NOT be posted or crossposted to any other comp.sys.next groups. news:comp.sys.next.bugs A place to report verifiable bugs in NeXT-supplied software. Material e-mailed to Bug_NeXT@NeXT.COM is not published, so this is a place for the net community find out about problems when they're discovered. This newsgroup has a very poor signal/noise ratio--all too often bozos post stuff here that really belongs someplace else. It rarely makes sense to crosspost between this and other c.s.n.* newsgroups, but individual reports may be germane to certain non-NeXT- specific groups as well. news:comp.sys.next.hardware Discussions about NeXT-label hardware and compatible peripherals, and non-NeXT-produced hardware (e.g. Intel) that is compatible with NEXTSTEP. In most cases, questions about Intel hardware are better asked in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware. Questions about SCSI devices belong in comp.periphs.scsi. Anything you post here by definition doesn't belong anywhere else in c.s.n.*--i.e. no crossposting!!! news:comp.sys.next.programmer Questions and discussions of interest to NEXTSTEP programmers. This is primarily a forum for advanced technical material. Generic UNIX questions belong elsewhere (comp.unix.questions), although specific questions about NeXT's implementation or porting issues are appropriate here. Note that there are several other more "horizontal" newsgroups (comp.lang.objective-c, comp.lang.postscript, comp.os.mach, comp.protocols.tcp-ip, etc.) that may also be of interest. news:comp.sys.next.software This is a place to talk about [third party] software products that run on NEXTSTEP systems. news:comp.sys.next.sysadmin Stuff relating to NeXT system administration issues; in rare cases this will spill over into .programmer or .software. Related Newsgroups ================== news:comp.soft-sys.nextstep Like comp.sys.next.software and comp.sys.next.misc combined. Exists because NeXT is a software-only company now, and comp.soft-sys is for discussion of software systems with scope similar to NEXTSTEP. news:comp.lang.objective-c Technical talk about the Objective-C language. Implemetations discussed include NeXT, Gnu, Stepstone, etc. news:comp.object Technical talk about OOP in general. Lots of C++ discussion, but NeXT and Objective-C get quite a bit of attention. At times gets almost philosophical about objects, but then again OOP allows one to be a programmer/philosopher. (The original comp.sys.next no longer exists--do not attempt to post to it.) Exception to the crossposting restrictions: announcements of usenet RFDs or CFVs, when made by the news.announce.newgroups moderator, may be simultaneously crossposted to all c.s.n.* newsgroups. ObjectPlan is currently in beta release and will begin shipping in calendar Q4 1996. The announcement was made at Object World West, being held at the San Jose Convention Center from August 20-22. ObjectPlan is being demonstrated in Lighthouse Design's booth (#726), as well as SunSoft's booth (#516). ObjectPlan provides five key development components necessary for creating a repository of object models and business processes. These components include hierarchical OMT object modeling with support for the representation and reuse of classes, subsystems and application frameworks; fully integrated Event Trace diagrams; forward and reverse engineering of pre-existing Java and OpenStep source code; a flexible code browser for navigating pre-existing source trees; and finally, an automated customizable mechanism for creating web-based or paper documentation. "We're seeing OpenStep emerge as the cross-platform standard for large-scale enterprises creating object-based Solaris (TM) and Windows NT (R) applications," said Jonathan Schwartz, General Manager, Lighthouse Design. "And Java has been overwhelmingly adopted as the universal deployment platform for inter- and intranet development. By exploiting OpenStep and Java together, ObjectPlan delivers a strategic weapon to developers seeking time to market advantages, and an insurance policy to decision-makers wanting to build the technical foundation for long-term, sustainable competitive advantage." "The reality of object software is that you can't reuse what isn't designed or documented for reuse." said Carol Teasley, VP of Object Technology for FannieMae. "ObjectPlan is at the core of our efforts to create a repository of business objects for use across FannieMae. We see it playing a central role in helping us achieve the benefits of component based software-for today's applications, and those we seek to create in the future." "We are delighted to see delivery of ObjectPlan, and Sun's increasing commitment to the OpenStep specification," said Mitchell Mandich, Vice President of Worldwide Sales for NeXT Software, Inc. "ObjectPlan is a welcome addition to the platform, and supplies an important standards based analysis and design solution to our mutual customers. We are looking forward to working together to assist those customers in developing and deploying leading edge Internet and Enterprise applications." As a modeling "whiteboard," ObjectPlan's integrated components facilitate the iterative design and development of component based applications. A unique `multiple view' approach to object design tightly integrates hierarchical OMT graphics with a code browser, event trace diagrams, and ultimately generated and reverse engineered code. Changes in one `view' of the model are immediately propagated to all other views, ensuring that design and implementation perspectives remain synchronized throughout the development life-cycle. Such change propagation automates documentation maintenance, and ensures the existence of up to date information regarding system architectures from design through shipment. ObjectPlan documents can be shared among teams of developers and managers in disparate locations, ensuring a common design model for large-scale application development. ObjectPlan's teaming technology supports multiple concurrent users. As a developer productivity tool, ObjectPlan allows developers to focus on high value development activities, and avoid mechanical coding or updating tasks. A code generation component automates the production of header files and implementation stubs in both Java and Objective-C, with support for C++, and CORBA's Interface Definition Language coming soon. Reverse engineering allows developers to generate live-linked OMT graphical representations from pre-existing source trees. Having incorporated source code into an ObjectPlan model, developers can simply drag and drop class graphics from application to application to reuse classes, or higher level application subsystems and frameworks. As an object management tool, applications designed in conjunction with ObjectPlan yield a repository of both objects and object models, the existence of which is crucial to organizations seeking to exploit reuse as part of their information technology strategy. Design and model repositories provide an easily accessible pool of information for developers maintaining old code bases, or business managers reviewing business processes. Lighthouse Design, a Sun Microsystems, Inc. business, serves corporate developers using object technology to create competitive business advantage. Lighthouse Design's products expedite the development and deployment of object based solutions to the World Wide Web, Sun's Solaris and Microsoft's Windows NT. Through integration with a CORBA 2.0-compliant object request broker, NeXT provides its customers with an easy and reliable way to interoperate with other CORBA 2.0 applications deployed across the corporate enterprise. NeXT is currently working with IONA Technologies to integrate its products with IONA's Orbix CORBA 2.0-based applications. "NeXT's integration with enterprise technologies such as CORBA 2.0 demonstrates their commitment to providing openness and flexibility for their customers," said Nina Lytton, President, Open Systems Advisors. "NeXT understands the importance of bringing together the best of the PC and UNIX worlds for the benefit of both." Support for the CORBA 2.0 standard provides WebObjects and OPENSTEP developers and users with increased development, deployment, and usability options. Combining WebObjects and OPENSTEP with CORBA 2.0 products, like IONA's industry leading Orbix, provides developers with a powerful, rapid, and flexible way to develop network-based client/server applications that support a myriad hardware and object models. With the surge of network-based computing, interoperability is critical not only within the organization's enterprise but also with systems outside of that organization. For customers, this integration will provide worry-free application interoperability across heterogeneous, distributed networks between web-based, enterprise-level client-server, and enterprise-wide CORBA 2.0 applications. "Going forward, I believe that support for the CORBA 2.0 standard will be critical to our enterprise's longevity ," said Gary Frederick of WorldCom's Architecture of Distributed Operations Group. "NeXT's interoperability with this important standard brings together the best of both worlds for them - NeXT's superior development tools for the web and enterprise client/server with the openness of CORBA 2.0 applications. Especially as the web becomes ubiquitous, the ability for legacy applications to integrate with all possible web environments is a must. CORBA 2.0 support is key for this level of openness." NeXT CORBA/OLE Interoperabiltiy NeXT makes use of Orbix's dynamic client and server interfaces to achieve two-way communication between NeXT objects and CORBA 2.0 Orbix objects via the industry standard IIOP protocol (Internet Inter-ORB Protocol). The combination of support for CORBA 2.0 and existing interoperability with OLE-based applications means NeXT's object model provides seamless connectivity from the Windows desktop all the way up to server-based CORBA 2.0 applications. This level of integration marries the two competing standards into something that customers can make use of today. The integration with CORBA 2.0 will be supported on Windows NT, HP/UX, and SunSoft Solaris platforms. NeXT Software, Inc. DaTASMITH 0.8 (Beta 2) includes enhancements to the API, several additional features, and many corrections and improvements over DaTASMITH 0.7 (Beta 1). DaTASMITH is a report building application and developer's kit designed to be used with NEXTSTEP's Enterprise Objects Framework (EOF). DaTASMITH has an easy to use drag and drop interface, allowing users and developers to quickly create complex reports from business information stored in EOModels. Like BLaCKSMITH's successful product CHaRTSMITH, DaTASMITH also provides a powerful and flexible Application Programmer's Interface (API). DaTASMITH's API allows developers to quickly and easily integrate a reporting capability into their custom applications. The API consists of a kit of objects, including a Report Builder and Report Viewer which can be linked directly into a custom application, without the overhead of Distributed Objects. DaTASMITH's API also provides entry points for developers to provide custom summary or aggregate functions, custom value classes, custom datasource classes, and custom EO classes. This gives developers a great deal of flexibility and control when integrating report generation into their custom applications. DaTASMITH fully leverages the power of NeXT's EOF so users can build reports using their own custom Enterprise Objects (EO). Reports are generated with data fetched using NEXTSTEP's EOModels and EOF, which can access industry-standard Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) such as Sybase and Oracle. Developers and users can build reports using dynamically-loaded custom EO classes, custom value classes, and custom datasource classes, alleviating the need for developer's to program in special scripting languages. With this feature, any data source - the world wide web, stock market feeds, flat file databases, spreadsheets - can be used by DaTASMITH to generate reports. Availability DaTASMITH 1.0, planned for release in Q3, 1996, will initially be available for NeXTSTEP 3.3 and EOF 1.1 for the Intel, Mach, PA-RISC, and Sparc platforms. Beta Available BLaCKSMITH welcomes input from users and developers. More information about DaTASMITH is available from BLaCKSMITH's Web site at http://www.blacksmith.com/product/. Anyone interested in testing and evaluating DaTASMITH may obtain a copy of this beta version via BLaCKSMITH's ftp site at the following URL: ftp://ftp.blacksmith.com/pub/Datasmith/Datasmith_0.8b.pkg.tar DaTASMITH is also available on floppy disks by contacting Denise Britti at 703.847.8180 or info@blacksmith.com. I make no claims that this package works or that I will fix bugs. All I can say is, it works for me. (-; I DID want to make it available to the public, since there seems to be a demand for this item. Enjoy. ------------------ GSPrintFilter-1.0.README Aug 1996 This GSPrintFilter package includes primarily Aladin Ghostscript, v4.01. It's application here is used as a filter, so that one can use a Non-PostScript printer with NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP. It comes bundles with many public domain fonts (PostScript and otherwise), but will fall back to using installed Postscript fonts in /NextLibrary/Fonts/outline and /LocalLibrary/Fonts/outline. SUPPORTED PRINTERS This version of ghostscript supports primarily Canon BubbleJet, HP DeskJet, HP LaserJet, HP PaintJet printers. Any printer capable of emulating these types of printers is also naturally supported. Please refer to the ghostscript www home page and included documentation in /usr/local/lib/ghostscript/4.01/doc for more information. prompt> /usr/local/lib/ghostscript/bin/gs-4.01 --help ..snip... Input formats: PostScript PostScriptLevel1 PostScriptLevel2 Available devices: deskjet djet500 laserjet ljetplus ljet2p ljet3 ljet4 lj4dith cdeskjet cdjcolor cdjmono cdj550 pj pjxl pjxl300 bj10e bj200 bjc600 bjc800 ..snip... INSTALLATION NOTE: most of these steps require root access. By default, the Installer.app will place all relavent files in /usr/local/lib/ghostscript. If you want it installed somewhere else, you're on your own. In order for ghostcript to use any custom installed fonts in /LocalLibrary/Fonts you'll need to create an outline directory containing symbolic links similar to the one you'll find in /NextLibrary/Fonts/outline Provided in this package is a script named 'outline.links' that will output shell script commands, that when executed in the given Font directory, will create the proper symbolic links. Once all files are in place, you'll need to create a Ghostscript printer using PrintManager.app. There are several generic ppd files included in this archive that you may use: you'll have to place them in either /NextLibrary/PrinterTypes/English.lproj or /LocalLibrary/PrinterTypes/English.lproj in order for PrintManager to use them. Alternatively, you can probably just create a printer entry using any ppd you already have (ie. it probably doesn't matter... much... at this stage). Run the provided GSFilter.postinstall script. Unless you specify otherwise on its command line, it assumes you want to use the ljet4 driver and name the new printer LocalGS. Alternatively, you may peruse the scripts contents and make the neccessary changes to NetInfo by hand using NetInfoManager. LIMITATIONS 0. This package has been tested only on Intel systems using the ljet2p and ljet4 drivers. 1. Ghostscript won't always be able to parse the postscript you give it. 2. Ghostscript insists in PS input, so you cannot print plain text files (at least not directly). 'lpr mytextfile.txt' fails. You COULD, however, use 'enscript'. Try 'man enscript' for more details. 3. Occurences of faulty output has been verified when printing in Landscape mode (using ljet4 driver) TODO 1. The package is too big. A lot of fat could have been trimmed by not including ALL of the optional ghostscript fonts and documentation. 2. Installation could be easier. Integrate With Existing and New Systems OPENSTEP Enterprise seamlessly integrates corporate data with business logic to create reusable business objects, enabling developers to focus on creating their own custom business objects. OPENSTEP Enterprise integrates with business data stored in Oracle, Sybase, Informix, DB2, ODBC, and many other data sources. OPENSTEP Enterprise also integrates mainframe systems, Windows applications (via OLE Automation), and CORBA 2.0 objects. Current investments are not only protected but leveraged in new applications. Now, information systems developers can rapidly deploy powerful distributed enterprise and intranet applications with legacy integration from a common set of business logic. They aren't pretty. Over the last three days its very likely that any submissions to Next-Announce have bounced, or otherwise been lost to the ether-bunnies. On Sunday, like all the other LOUSY QUANTUM DRIVES I've got, my home directory drive died. This is the third LOUSY QUANTUM DRIVES (all Empire 1080S) I've had die on me in the last 6 months. None of these drives have been more than 2.5 years old, 2 had infact only been in use for about 6 months. Since that machine was also my work machine, and my DNS/mail server, I've had to juggle some equipment around to keep things running, and I've not been 100% successful. There were some email problems due to the shuffling Anything received from early last week till Sunday that was un-replied to is gone. Please resend if its important. This includes my personal mailbox, as well as announce or Stepwise related stuff There is a good chance stuff has been bouncing periodically since Sunday. I had some DNS problems due to my sendmail upgrade, and then more sendmail problems trying to use sendmail 8.7.5 with Procmail as my local delivery agent. I've only diagnosed this late Wednesday, so I'll bet stuff has been lost. I've had to remove procmail temporarily to make Sendmail happy, so acknowledgements are not automatic for announce right now. Again, please resend if you are at all unsure. I'd rather have duplicates than missing stuff. If you have any solution to my Sendmail/Procmail problem, which I've detailed in comp.sys.next.sysadmin Message-ID: <502egs$50c@news.digifix.com>, I'd appreciate some help getting this fixed. Stepwise is still up and running, no Stepwise data was lost in this incident, unlike earlier this year when LOUSY QUANTUM DRIVE #2 went south and took alot with it. Stepwise has been up and down as I've been fixing various problems caused by the failure and my stupidity in trying to fix other things... It should be stable now. However, Stepwise is still running on a LOUSY QUANTUM DRIVE of the same model and vintage, and I'm going to have to move move it to a reliable hard drive just as soon as I can get together the resources for it. Every drive I have is of this same LOUSY QUANTUM DRIVE series, and I have this horrible feeling that the other 4 are going to go soon. GRRRR. And my DAT drive, purchased from LaCIE (oddly enough, a QUANTUM company) is unreliable, so my backups are often unuseable. NEVER AGAIN WILL QUANTUM GET A PENNY OF MY MONEY. I have one Seagate Drive that is as old as the Turbo Slab its in, has been running for 5 years or so, and WORKS. I'll buy Seagate, but not Quantum (or Fujitsu, but don't get me started about my 'emergency replacement drive' that sat on the shelf for 6 months and was DOA when I went to replace this LOUSY QUANTUM DRIVE with it.) LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA - August 26, 1996. Target Development announces the 4.01 release of ReportPalette for the Enterprise Objects Framework. The ReportPalette is a collection of objects that allow you to easily add custom report writing features into your EOF applications. Unlike traditional report writers that directly access database tables, the ReportPalette reports on NSDictionary values from your Enterprise Objects. EOControllers can be used to define the hierarchy of the report, and Interface Builder serves as the medium for page layout. Using the ReportPalette, keys of your EO's can be mapped directly to columns or free-form text fields on the report page. Images and formatted rich text with imbedded keys can also be added graphically. This WYSIWYG reporting tool is capable of reproducing custom forms, generating mailing labels and form letters, and producing on-the-fly hierarchical column-based and free-form reports. The palette also supports auxiliary qualifiers, horizontal pagination, and runtime document archiving. Other ReportPalette Features: + Custom Page Sequences; graphical ordering of static and dynamic pages + Custom page backgrounds; for page header and footer information + Automatic Page Layout control at runtime + Multi-level group headers and footers, including totals + Column Headers and Footers, with totals + Horizontal Pagination + Runtime document archiving + Full support for the Foundation classes, including NSString, NSNumber, NSCalendarDate, NSData for RTF(D), and NXImage objects. + Fully documented API for programmatic customization The ReportPalette ships with several demo applications and NIBs, along with install scripts and EOModels for Sybase, Oracle, Informix, and QuickBase. The example NIBs can be loaded and run using IB's 'Test Interface' mode! That's how easy it is! Example NIBs include a column based report, form letters, mailing labels, a free-form report, and a custom healthcare form. A date licensed version of the palette is available via ftp or directly from Target Development. The product is licensed through September 30 of 1996. The product includes the Interface Builder palette, header files, libraries, complete technical documentation, and various demo applications and NIBS. The palette retails for $895.00 per developer seat. No runtime fees apply. Educational, site, and source licenses are also available. A beta OpenStep release of this product (for EOF 1.2) is also available from StepWise. The palette is available via ftp from : ftp://ftp.stepwise.com/pub/Vendors/Target_Development/NS3.3/ReportPalet te Installation_README.rtfd.tar.gz ReportPalette.pkg.tar.gz Or simply download from our Web page on Stepwise. Just look for Target_Development under the Software Developers Category. http://www.stepwise.com The archived version is compiled quad-FAT for Intel, Motorola, Sparc and HP-PA.
