[ \-\fBc\fP \fIstring\fP ] [ \fIarg\fP ... ] Because zsh contains many features, the zsh manual has been split into a number of sections: \fIzsh\fP Zsh overview (this section) \fIzshbuiltins\fP Zsh built-in functions \fIzshcompctl\fP Zsh completion control \fIzshexpn\fP Zsh command and parameter expansion \fIzshparam\fP Zsh parameters \fIzshzle\fP Zsh command line editing \fIzshoptions\fP Zsh options \fIzshmisc\fP Currently everything else \fIzshall\fP Meta-man page containing all of the above .SH "DESCRIPTION" Zsh is a UNIX command interpreter (shell) usable as an interactive login shell and as a shell script command processor. Of the standard shells, zsh most closely resembles \fIksh\fR but includes many enhancements. Zsh has comand line editing, builtin spelling correction, programmable command completion, shell functions (with autoloading), a history mechanism, and a host of other features. .SH "INVOCATION OPTIONS" If the \-\fBs\fP flag is not present and an argument is given, the first argument is taken to be the pathname of a script to execute. The remaining arguments are assigned to the positional parameters. The following flags are interpreted by the shell when invoked: .TP .PD 0 \-\fBc\fP \fIstring\fP Read commands from \fIstring\fP. .TP \-\fBi\fP Force shell to be interactive. .TP \-\fBs\fP Read command from the standard input. .sp .SH STARTUP/SHUTDOWN FILES Commands are first read from \fB%zshenv%\fP. If the \fBRCS\fP option is unset within \fB%zshenv%\fP, all other initialization files are skipped. Otherwise, commands are read from \fB$ZDOTDIR/.zshenv\fP. (If \fBZDOTDIR\fP is unset, \fBHOME\fP is used instead). If the first character of argument zero passed to the shell is \-, or if the \-\fBl\fP flag is present, then the shell is assumed to be a login shell, and commands are read from \fB%zprofile%\fP and then \fB$ZDOTDIR/.zprofile\fP. Then, if the shell is interactive, commands are read from \fB%zshrc%\fP and then \fB$ZDOTDIR/.zshrc\fP. Finally, if the shell is a login shell, \fB%zlogin%\fP and \fB$ZDOTDIR/.zlogin\fP are read. .sp .SH FILES .B $ZDOTDIR/.zshenv .br .B $ZDOTDIR/.zprofile .br .B $ZDOTDIR/.zshrc .br .B $ZDOTDIR/.zlogin .br .B $ZDOTDIR/.zlogout .br \fB${TMPPREFIX}*\fP (default is /tmp/zsh*) .br .B %zshenv% .br .B %zprofile% .br .B %zshrc% .br .B %zlogin% .br .B %zlogout% .sp .SH AUTHOR Zsh was originally written by Paul Falstad <pjf@cts.com>.
