GNU awk is a pattern scanning and processing language and tool. gawk 3.0 should be upwardly compatible with the System V Release 4 awk. It is almost completely compliant with POSIX 1003.2. An excellent source for learning how to use awk/gawk is the O'Reilly and Associates book "SED and AWK" by Dale Dougherty. ISBN 0-937175-59-5.
