README.NeXT

If you need a fast and small (90 KB binary) sort of emacs like editor with
macro facilities for NeXTstep, you may want to try MicroEmacs v3.10 under
NeXTstep. (We use it together with GNU emacs since 1992 under NeXTstep.)

Included in this distribution are:

me-3.10/
me-3.10/cmd - startup, help menu and other macro files
me-3.10/src - sources and a NeXT black hardware binary
me-3.10/doc - docs and a online tutorial
me-3.10/make - makefiles for different platforms
me-3.10/patch - some diffs (not relevant for NS)

To build and install MicroEmacs, see the supplied INSTALL.NeXT file.
(NS Intel/HP/Sun users should recompile the sources. Sorry, we don't
 have those platforms available)

NOTE: This port supports also the MicroEmacs startup, menu system
and other macro facilities. The function keys - are emulated
under NS (we embedded the 'func.cmd' macro into the .emacsrc
file). You have to use the NS keystrokes shown in the below
table to emulate function keys under NS:

               ME MENU | NS keystrokes
               --------------------------
                   f1 | ^C 1
                   f2 | ^C 2
                   ... | ...
                   f10 | ^C 0
                        |
                   F1 | ^C shift 1
                   F2 | ^C shift 2
                   ... | ...
                   F10 | ^C shift 0
               --------------------------

However, you are not forced to use the macro facilities and
startup stuff under MicroEmacs. The binary works also stand-
alone, without the makro (*.cmd) and startup files etc., but
then you can't use the online-help and page modes!

NO GUARANTEES, WE JUST HACKED IT TO WORK FOR US.
