The code in this directory in currently in beta stage. USAGE AGREEMENT AND STATUS OF PPP-2.2 FOR NeXTSTEP ================================================== This version of PPP for NeXTSTEP is a port of the public domain PPP-2.2 code. The PPP-2.2 package and user level daemon were written and are administered by Paul Mackerras <Paul.Mackerras@cs.anu.edu.au>. The NeXT specific changes and Loadable Kernel Server (LKS) were written by Stephen Perkins <perkins@cps.msu.edu>, Philip Prindeville <philipp@res.enst.fr>, and Pete French <pete@ohm.york.ac.uk>. The PPP-2.2 distribution is currently in beta stage. The current code is based on the second beta source release of PPP-2.2 (ppp-2.2b2). The NeXT port will remain in beta stage as long as the PPP-2.2 remains in that stage. Then, the NeXT port will follow the stages of PPP-2.2. The beta status of this work means several things to users: 1) The code and operation of the system will probably change before the final released version. These changes will hopefully lead towards greater stability on all NeXTSTEP platforms. However, users should expect to have to upgrade several times before this package is officially released. 2) Users may encounter bugs in the code. These bugs could be minor or could lead to severe system disruption (system panics). No guarantees are made as to the fitness of this product for any purpose. You use it at your own risk. If you need commercial grade support, you might want to check out Morningstar's PPP implementation <marketing@MorningStar.Com>. 3) Any problems encountered with this software must be resolved within the PPP-2.2 testing community. This means that bug reports, installation questions, configuration questions, or any other such corrispondence must go to the NeXT PPP mailing list <nextppp@listproc.thoughtport.com>. 4) UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES are you to post questions or problems regarding this port to any USENET news group _before_ you first contact the mailing list. Usage of this package indicates your acceptance of these terms. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- That being said, this site contains code from the latest versions of the PPP porting effort for NeXT computers (NeXTSTEP OS version 3.2 or later, all platforms). The files located here all have names that describe their version. The filenames will be something like: NeXT-ppp2.2-0.3.3.tar.gz NeXT-ppp2.2-0.3.3-patch<n>.tar.gz meaning ppp version 2.2 NeXT release 0.3.3. The number 0.3.3 will change as new versions are released. If there are patch files, only the latest patch<n> file needs to be installed over the NeXT distribution. The patch files untar into a separate directory. That directory will contain instructions on how to apply the patch. Typically, the latest two versions are kept on the archive. This work requires OS version 3.2 or greater. Earlier OS versions do not support some of the required POSIX functionality (nor MAB file support). It will run on the Motorola, Intel, HPPA, and Sparc ports. Version 2.2 of PPP implements BSD packet compression. Further, it provides for priority queueing of interactive traffic and it implements VJ TCP Header Compression. Finally, it contains _many_ bug fixes and enhancements over 2.1.2. The MAB is a binary only distribution. It is present for people who do not have a developer version of NeXTSTEP.
