This package is based on the timezone data and code files provided by Arthur David Olson (arthur_david_olson@nih.gov), and available at ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub. It contains:

·	Quad-fat executables for zic (the time zone compiler) and zdump.

·	Timezone data files, modified somewhat to work on NEXTSTEP, and current as of September 8th, 1996 (version 96k). These files include the rules appropriate for the 7th EU directive, which mandates that daylight saving time end on the last Sunday of October.

·	A region dictionary mapping the timezones defined in the data files to the geographical areas known by the Time module of Preferences.app.

Disclaimer: This package has been developed and tested on NEXTSTEP 3.3 running on black hardware. My guess is that it should run on other architectures running 3.3. It may or may not work on 3.[012] or 4.0. In particular, I seem to remember that the definition of timezones in Preferences.app has changed in the past (maybe in 3.2 or 3.3).

To install this package you must:

1	-	Login as root

2	-	Unarchive the distribution, preferably in an empty directory:

cd dir
gnutar xvzf timezones96.tar.gz

3	-	Install the executables in a common directory (e.g. /usr/local/bin):

cd /usr/local/bin
tar xvf dir/tz96bin.tar

4	-	Save the current contents of your timezone definitions (better safe than sorry...):

cd /etc
tar cvf /etc/zoneinfo.pre96.tar /etc/zoneinfo

5	-	Remove all existing timezone files:

rm -rf /etc/zoneinfo/*

6	-	Install the timezone data files in /etc/timezone:

 cd /etc/zoneinfo
 tar xvf dir/tz96data.tar

7	-	Compile the timezone data files:

 cd /etc/zoneinfo
 /usr/local/bin/zic sources/*

8	-	Restart Preferences.app, go to the Time preferences, click on the area where you are located, and use the pop-up list to choose the rule more appropriate for your location.

That's all folks. If you're in western Europe, your computer should end daylight savings time on October 27th. (I am told that the rules may change again next year. Sigh.)
