This is the README for NewFile.2.0.s.tar.gz [Download] [Browse] [Up]

This is the readme file for NewFile2 version 2, the first public release of the NewFile application. NewFile was compiled under 2.1; it should run under 2.0 and maybe 3.0, but I haven't tested that.

NewFile has been submitted as two separate files, one for the executable and one for the source code, to make life easier for those who only need/want one or the other.

NewFile allows you to create new files and directory structures in the current directory of an application. It's intended for those times when you have a directory selected in a Workspace browser and have to create a file in the directory. Rather than change to another application and relocate the directory, you can use a menu item to create the file and have it opened in the appropriate application.

NewFile is also useful if you use any type of template file: rather than start with a blank file and copy the template, you can create a file with the template already present. A simple example of this is creating a Rich Text File or WriteNow file with given font and ruler settings. Similarly, you can create directory trees with a given structure and contents.

NewFile is particularly useful for shell scripts: rather than activate Edit, create a new file, save the file, close the file, activate the Workspace, set the execute bit, bring up the tools inspector and open the script in Edit again, you can simply select one menu item and enter the name for the script.
