Gamma.preferences Version 1.0 beta February 13, 1996 This module lets you set the NeXTStep Windowserver gamma correction factor. Basically, it just plays Mr. Nice GUI for the included command line program setlut, which has to be in /usr/local/bin with root ownership and setuid execution enabled (in other words, from the command line type chmod 04755 setlut and perhaps also chown root setlut). The executable setlut is seperate because alteration of the gamma correction factor requires root privilege, and so that it can be used standalone from the command line; the latter is also the reason for it being expected in a public binaries directory. In this beta version the path is hardwired into the module. The gamma value is stored for each user using a dwrite. There are some restrictions: a) it only works for machines running in 24 bit colour mode b) it only works on Intel hardware c) the user's personal gamma value is not restored upon login; you have to activate Preferences.app to get it. Restriction a) is pretty final; changing the colour tables used for dithering in lower bit±per±pixel modes would be rather tricky. Restriction b) can probably be lifted if someone tells us how to set the device driver colour mapping for the other platforms. Restriction c): well, please tell us how to do that! Since this is a beta version, don't expect too much. We would be grateful for any e±mailed bug reports or hints. This module will be shipped in a .pkg file once it is complete. Legal stuff: we do not claim this software to be fit for any purpose whatsoever. If you use it and it screws up you machine, it's you fault, for you are using it entirely at your own risk.
