Subject: SUBMISSION: Pastry 1.2 -- A Pasteboard Application I'm pleased to announce a publicly available update to Pastry, a shareware application that provides 3 basic features: - it lets you put any number of items onto the pasteboard instead of just one, - it lets you lock-in the items that you use frequently, such as your favorite fonts or your email signature, so they are always available for pasting into any application, - it lets you examine the contents of any item on the pasteboard without leaving the application you are working in, plus many other features including drag-n-drop to and from the pasteboard, unlimited undo/redo, combination of separately-copied text items into a single item on the pasteboard, complete online help, and localization for English and French. But my description is feeble -- the best way to get the picture is to try the fully-functional demo available at the NeXTSTEP archive sites listed below. ------------------- Some of the changes from Pastry 1.1 (July 1994) to 1.2 (September 1994): NEW FEATURES "Refuse to Hide" preference. Causes Pastry not to hide when an application's icon is command-double-clicked. "Font Size" preference. You can set the size of the text on the buttons, and Pastry uses the Application font set in Preferences.app. New descriptive text on font items. Instead of "Font" it shows the font name and point size. Object Link support improved -- click on the "link icon" in the Inspector Panel to open the source document. Services support improved -- Pastry can accept data returned by other apps through services. Image inspector allows selection of a piece of the image by dragging out a rubber band. File inspector allows double-clicking a filename to open a file in the Workspace. InspectorPanel allows selection of a specific type to inspect by clicking in the "Types List Inspector." Updated Help. BUG FIXES (several -- these are the most important) Problems working with Data Links and /usr/bin/copy corrected. Two fatal bugs were squashed. ------------------- You can find Pastry 1.2 in a MAB (Motorola and Intel -- mail me for the HP version) Installer package at the following sites: currently in ftp://ftp.cs.orst.edu/pub/next/submissions/Pastry1.2.tar.gz probably moving to ftp://ftp.cs.orst.edu/pub/next/binaries/next-interface/Pastry1.2.tar.gz currently in ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-muenchen.de/pub/platforms/next/submissions/Pastry1.2.tar.gz probably moving to ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-muenchen.de/pub/platforms/next/Tools/pasteboard/Pastry1.2.tar.gz IMPORTANT: Because Pastry is a Multi-Architecture Binary (Motorola and Intel) and uses MAB bundles, it requires NeXTSTEP 3.1 or newer. (It will work with 3.0 only if you thin the fat bundles). Send me mail if you need a copy that is pre-thinned for 3.0. Pastry is shareware. A single license is $25 -- see the online help for registration details. Registered users of previous versions of Pastry do not need to re-register to use 1.2. Just grab it from one of the sites -- or send me mail if you don't have access to ftp. Pastry uses a few classes from the MiscKit, the Objective-C kit developed by the NeXTSTEP community under the direction of Don Yacktman. Send correspondence about Pastry to davisre@netcom.com (use the Suggestion menu option in Pastry). Blissfully, Rob September, 1994
