If it is not present, then the 'List Contents' feature will produce no output. -- If you wish to contact the author, please send email to gbrown@alumni.caltech.edu. Comments are welcome! Purpose: TARInspector allows the user to view a listing of the contents of .tar files from within the the NeXTSTEP Workspace Manager. This is especially useful in determining whether unarchiving the .tar file will neatly place all unarchived files within a folder or messily unarchive many files within the current directory. Use: To use TARInspector, simply select a .tar file in the NeXT Workspace manager and type Command-2. Installation: Owners of NeXT hardware: Installation is trivial: Drag TARInspector.bundle to ~/Apps or /LocalApps, logout, and login. If you put TARInspector.bundle in ~/Apps, it will be available only to the user who performed the installation. If you put TARInspector.bundle in /LocalApps, it will be available to everyone who uses your machine or your network's file server. NeXTSTEP for Intel Processors owners: As of 3/6/93, the multiplatform developer environment for NeXTSTEP was not available, so the included TARInspector.bundle is not compatible with NS/FIP. However, if you have the developer's software installation for NS/FIP, the following installation process should work: (WARNING: This procedure has not been tested, and may crash the Workspace if it fails. If this happens, logout, login, and remove TARInspector.bundle from your system.) XRemove TARInspector.bundle. XDouble-click on Source/PB.project. XWithin ProjectBuilder, click 'Builder', then 'BUILD'. Quit ProjectBuilder. XCopy /Source/TARInspector.bundle to ~/Apps or /LocalApps, logout, and login. Documentation: Other than documenting installation, TARInspector is self-documenting. Source Code: For those who are interested in the source, it is included and copiously commented. Also, there are .readme files that include additional comments. Thanks: XThanks go out to the people at NeXTX for making the Workspace Manager easily extensible. The author looks forward to the updates to the inspector programmer's interface that NeXT has promised... and some that NeXT has not promised. For example, the ability to display background processes in the Workspace Processes monitor, direct access to the 'unarchive' file operation, and a mechanism for inspectors to be informed when background tasks terminate (this latter functionality is currently available, but only to applications).
