README for ArchiveInspector
Version 0.91beta
by Chris Saldanha <csaldanh@acm.org>

ArchiveInspector is a tri-fat (sorry, I didn't have an HP-PA compiled MiscKit, it'll be in the next version, I promise) module for the NeXTSTEP/OpenStep Workspace Manager (i.e. the File Viewer), which adds a Contents inspector panel allowing you to browse around inside various kinds of multi-file archives:

	-.tar
	-.tar.Z
	-.tar.gz
	-.compressed
	-.zip

You may also extract individual files from the archive (only one at a time, at present), or extract all the files at once, to the current directory, or a specified one. You can also decompress .gz and .Z files (in-place) that aren't also tar archives, so you don't lose the functionality of the NeXT inspector.

Please read the file "LICENSE" for license and usage information, "HELP" for info about how to use this fairly trivial inspector, and the file "INSTALL" for installation notes.

If you want to receive email when I post new versions of this software, please email me with your desired email address and I'll add you to my list. I will not give this list to other people.

THIS IS BETA SOFTWARE. THIS MEANS THAT THERE ARE LIKELY TO BE BUGS IN THIS SOFTWARE. I am releasing this version with BUGS and TODO files, which list the changes to come. Nothing destructive should occur when using this program, but I can't guarantee that. I test only on NeXTSTEP 3.3. It should work on OpenStep for Mach, but I haven't tried it (please let me know!).

I would appreciate it if people would have a go at trying to break this module, and please report any bugs or feedback/suggestions to me.

This program is PostCardWare, which is essentially free software. Usage is governed by the license found in the file LICENSE (PLEASE READ IT!), which came with the distribution. If you didn't get this file, please let me know where you got your copy of this software, and I will happily send you a copy by email. I am not distributing source code for the beta versions of the software, but I will likely do so when the software is in a release state.

This program makes use of the MiscKit, version 1.9.0, particularly the MiscString and MiscTree classes. I have written a category on MiscTree that parses pathnames and inserts all the right things into the MiscTree. I'm going to submit that code, when it's a bit more stable, into the MiscKit. Please visit http://www.misckit.com/ for info about this excellent collection of free objects, classes and palettes that make NeXTSTEP/OpenStep development even better than usual.
