Chapter 1
Introduction to Sledgehammer 1.1

Sledgehammer 1.1 is a shareware utility program which will allow you to easily create and maintain UNIXTM compatible archives. This compatibility is achieved through use of the tar command. Sledgehammer also provides compression via use of the compress command. This will allow you to open, modify, and extract files from compressed archives created on other platforms, such as Sun and Hewlett Packard. In addition to archiving facilities, Sledgehammer also provides compression and decompression of files in the Services menu.

Features

Features of Sledgehammer 1.1 include:
·	UNIXTM compatibility
·	Familiar file listing, similar to the Workspace Manager.
·	NeXTStepTM drag-and-drop support
·	Services menu support for compression/decompression of files from other programs, such as the Workspace Manager
·	Extraction/removal of individual files from .tar archives
·	Multi-threaded so you can keep working while lengthy save, compress, or decompress operations are in progress

Installation

Installation of Sledgehammer is simple: copy the file package named Sledgehammer.app into ~/Apps or /LocalApps. If you want to take full advantage of the support Sledgehammer provides for the Services menu, you will need to install it in /LocalApps.

Note: Alternately, instead of placing Sledgehammer in /LocalApps, you may place it in your application dock and still take full advantage of Services support.

Once you have installed Sledgehammer in /LocalApps, you will need to start Sledgehammer by double-clicking on its icon in the Workspace, log out, and log back in before Sledgehammer's services show up in the Services menu.

The Catch

This version of Sledgehammer is distributed as shareware. That is, you are free to use Sledgehammer for a period of thirty (30) days. After this initial evaluation period, you are required to:

	· Purchase Sledgehammer by filling out the provided purchase form and making payment, or
	· Discontinue using Sledgehammer. Feel free to pass it along to someone else you know even if you decide not to purchase it for yourself.

Sledgehammer is offered at the price of $20 US. Please make checks or money orders payable in US funds to:
