nextispell is a daemon establishing the connection between ispell (by
Geoff Kuenning) and the NeXT spell panel.
ispell is a very flexible spelling correction program. Provided with a
word list and rules ispell checks your text in any language. ispell also
has a special tex mode which is very handy for scientists like me.
nextispell brings all this strength into the NeXT GUI.
You need to have ispell installed, then nextispell may easily be configured
and installed. (The spell server invokes ispell and communicates with
it via a pipe)
nextispell is still worked on. Version 0.8 should however be _the_ version
for some time. There is a bug in the NXSpellServer which has to be fixed
by NeXT before I release a nextispell 1.0. This may still take till NS 4.0.
Thanks to Detlev Droege and Geoff Kuenning for new ideas and thanks
to Christoph Hauert for his ever patient help.
Not to forget Brian Hill at NeXT for checking out a bug in NS 3.x for me.
Installation:
- run the configure script
- the makefile will opened. Somewhere at the top will be a line like:
DAEMONS = nextispell_english.daemon nextispell_english-tex.daemon
nextispell_german.daemon nextispell_german-tex.daemon
Remove the daemons you don't want to be made. In this example you would
get by default a spelling checker for English, English in TeX mode, German
and German in TeX mode. You might want to delete the entry
nextispell_english.daemon because NeXT already supplies us with an
English spelling checker.
- maybe you want to set the INSTALLDIR to /LocalLibrary
you must then be root to `make install`
- make
- set the nextispell defaults as described below
use dwrite and dread (-> manpages)or some GUI tool like DefaultMgr,
the Preferences bundle DefaultsSystem or equivalent.
make will provide you with a suggestion, which you most certainly must edit
- make install (puts the service in ${INSTALLDIR}/Services)
or place it by hand in either ~/Library/Services or /LocalLibrary/Services
- make_services in a shell or Update Viewers (Cmd-u) in the Workspace
- restart the App you want to use the spelling checker in
- Choose Edit->Spelling... (sometimes Cmd-:) and select the appropriate
entry in the popup list
Defaults:
The defaults for "nextispell" are
- ispell: indicating the path to start ispell
- tersemode: to start ispell in terse mode, this may speed things up
- linesize: size of the lines send to ispell, should be at most
BUFSIZ (1024) - 100, i.e. ~900 and at least the length
of some words (40); a good value is 128 (or better
127 ?). Test it, which value is best for you. The
more mistakes you have in a text, the smaller the
linesize should be.
- and the ispell options for desired languages (none needed for English)
The name of the language, is usually the name of the language in
English. It must be the same as the one in the entry in the
service file inside the bundle's wrapper (Cmd-O in Workspace
or double click). The entry in the service file must be the same
as the one nextispell's binary is registering for. You can find out
this name by running the daemon with the -v option from a shell.
The languages ending in "-tex" have their own default.
They put ispell into tex mode at start up.
They must end in "-tex" not "-TeX" or something like that.
Your defaults might look like this:

Know Problems:
The report of the position of the misspelled word has been changed at
some time in ispell. If your words get constantly selected by one to
far to the right or left, you can accordingly set the define OFFSET_CORR
in Dictionaire.m.
