Installing Wacom Serial Tablet Device Driver for NEXTSTEP Release 3.2 for Intel Processors

These instructions show you which computer systems are supported by the Wacom Serial Tablet device driver. They also show you how to install the device driver on an Intel-based computer running NEXTSTEPä Release 3.2. The driver is distributed in an Installer package file named WacomTablet.pkg.

Supported Computer Systems

Wacom Serial Tablet device driver lets you take advantage of all systems that can use COM ports for attaching Wacom Serial Tablet.

Only the superuser, root, can install the updated device driver. If you're not sure how to log in as root, see your system administrator.

You must restart your computer after installing and configuring the updated device driver.

The next time you start up your computer, it will use the new driver to handle Wacom Serial Tablet.

Customizing Wacom Tablet driver settings.

After the computer has been rebooted, check file /usr/adm/messages to be sure that the light pen driver was loaded successfully. There should be a string Wacom Tablet model XXX found at COMn indicating that tablet driver found tablet at the corresponding COM port and start operation, and string Registering: WACOMTablet0 indicating that driver was successfully registered. Now you can run the accompanying application TabletTuner.app from /NextApps and adjust various parameters.

NOTE to system administrators: To operate properly, the directory TabletTuner.app should have root as owner and following permissions:
drwxr-xr-x 3 root 1024 Aug 22 16:18 TabletTuner.app
To set this up, log in as a superuser and run chown -R TabletTuner.app
The executable file TabletTuner inside directory TabletTuner.app should have following permissions:
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root 90112 Aug 22 16:18 TabletTuner*
Run chmod u+s TabletTuner.app/TabletTuner when you a superuser to correct this.

TabletTuner.app allows different users customize various settings of WacomTablet driver with personal preferences, to save and load these settings without necessity of dealing with Configure.app and knowledge of the root password. Also, the user can install WacomTuner.app into the Workspace Manager dock and select it to be launched at the startup time, so every time you log into the system these preferences will be restored to agree with your personal needs.

TabletTuner.app allows the user to choose the pointing mode in which the tablet is working, to adjust the pressure and select the work area on the tablet.

Pointing mode

The Wacom Tablet can work in two pointing modes: absolute and relative. In absolute mode every point within the work area on the tablet corresponds to some point on the screen. When you point to some place on the tablet, the cursor must always be at the same point on the screen.
In relative mode tablet emulates mouse movement. Here only relative movement of the tablet stylus is meaningful -- regardless of absolute position.

Pressure

In absolute pointing mode, the Wacom Tablet can generate pressure data which can be used in pressure-aware applications. Despite this, the pressure mode can be turned on even in relative mode, but the pressure data will not be generated. When pressure exceeds a value called the Pressure threshold, the tablet generates a 'button pressed' event which is analoguous to pressing the mouse button. The Pressure threshold can be adjusted by scrolling pressure slider or entering value into text field. Pressure treshold should not exceed the value 255.

Work area

The work area is the place on the tablet which corrsponds to screen surface. One can adjust it by specifying coordinates of the Upper-Left or Lower-Right hand corners of that area. Coordinates of those points can be entered either into corresponding text fields, or by pressing the Point button and selecting the proper position by directly pointing to it with the tablet stylus. When the desired position is found, the stylus should be pressed to fix it.

Mouse Emulation

This feature allows to alter mouse events generated by pressing either tip or side switch of the stylus. One can choose whether pressing on side or tip stylus switch will generate left or right mouse button click or not clicks at all.
