What is Sniff?
=====
Sniff is brought to you by Dmitri Linde, the author of another practical-joke-app: ArtificialIntelligence.

Sniff was inspired by a similar program for Apple Machintosh Computer. It is a great practical joke. Just click the `Begin Sniffing' button and quit this program. Then your computer will sniff once in a while. Because most people sniff once in a while, they usually ignore the familiar sound, so when the computer sniffs, the user may attribute the sniffing to herself or himself and may get annoyed. Furthermore, if there are several users in the computer room, they will atribute the sniffing sound to the user on this computer.

What should I do to use it?
===
Sniff will only work if the victim (other user) has turned on the PUBLIC SOUND SERVER option in Preferences or if the victim is the same account in which you run Sniff.app. You may not turn on this option for other users from your account. However if you can login as root, PUBLIC SOUND SERVER option will not be used, and Sniff will work on all users.
Here are several suggestions of activating Sniff:
1)Login as root and run Sniff.app and click on the `Begin Sniffing' button. Then quit and logout. All future users will hear the computer sniff. This is the most sure way to use Sniff, but it requirs a root password.
or
2)Press the `Begin Sniffing' button when logged in any account. Then quit. Only users with PUBLIC SOUND SERVER option turned on will hear sniffing.
or
3)When the user walks away from the computer for a coffee break, quickly come to the computer and run Sniff.app. Then press the `Begin Sniffing' button and quit Sniff.app. Hopefully, you will not be noticed and the user will resume his/her work.
or
4)If you are a UNIX expert and you know the root password you can run Sniff.app/sniff using telnet from another computer. If you want to change the maximum and minium time between sniffs you can add these as arguments: e.g. /LocalApps/Sniff.app/sniff 240 360& will sniff about every 4 or 6 minutes. You should run it as a superuser so that PUBLIC SOUND SERVER option will be no problem.

Before you press the `Begin Sniffing' button, press the `Sniff Once' button and play with sound volume keys (on the keyboard) until you get a moderatetely loud sniff -- loud enough to be heard, but not loud enough for the user to understand from the first time that the computer sniffed.

Let me know how it works!!!

P.S. To stop sniffing you can run this program again and click on the `Stop Sniffing' button. You must run it from the same account as the account in which you pressed the `Begin Sniffing' button or you must run is as root.
