Tetris 1.0

This distribution of Tetris contains two files:

Tetris:	the executable for the game
README:	the file that you are reading now

The NeXT version of Tetris resulted from my desire to have the game on
the NeXT. Tetris is quite a popular game here on campus, and since
it's available on almost all makes of computers, it is played quite a
lot. However, now that I am using a NeXT quite a bit in my daily
computing work, I realize that I'm missing out on the fun of being
able to play the game on this machine. So, here is my attempt at
reconciling the problem.

Tetris is freeware, so please feel free to pass it along to others. I
only ask that you include this README file with the game so that
others will know how to install the program. Feel free to send me any
suggestions or bugs you find. If there is enough response, I'll work
on a future version.

Enjoy.

INSTALLATION
------------

Installation is quite simple. As in the normal case, move the Tetris
program either to your own Apps directory or to the /LocalApps
directory. I suggest that you install it in /LocalApps so that
everyone on the system can play. (You may need superuser access to do
this, though.) After you've done one of these two, go to the
Utilities menu in Workspace and choose Find Applications to update the
icons.

The only tricky part comes from a file called .TetrisScores, a file
that Tetris uses to keep track of high scores. This file can be
installed in the same directory as the one that Tetris is in, or in
your home directory. If you install the program in /LocalApps, then
it would make sense to keep .TetrisScores in /LocalApps. Normally,
this file is created automatically by Tetris after the first run, but
if you install Tetris in /LocalApps, then you'll have to do some
preparations to make the file accessible to everyone.

If you decide to install it in /LocalApps, then do the following after
installing the program. Run the Terminal application and enter 'touch
/LocalApps/.TetrisScores'. Finally, do a 'chmod 666
/LocalApps/.TetrisScores'. (An alternative way to give everyone
access to .TetrisScores is to create the file and set the
setuid-to-root bit for the Tetris program. If you understand what
this means, then you already know how to do it.)

README2

If you are using a monochrome system, you should copy the Tetris
blocks from MonoBlocks to this directory. You can design blocks of
your own by using Icon and saving them as Block1, Block2, Block3 and
Block4. Be sure to save you images as 16x16 files. NOTE: Icon will
open(and save) the Block images as 48x48 so you will have to change
the image size back to 16x16.

Also, if you would like to design a color icon for Tetris, please
NeXTmail me the TIFF at the following address.

melling@cs.psu.edu

Also, I'm interested in hearing about any features that you would like
added.
