October 18th 1994

FontAnalyzer.app is intended to be typeface selection and design aid for
everybody

IF YOU
· don't know what is a font
· don't want to know more about them
· don't want to try software that is still under development
FORGET THIS APPLICATION !

Other good reasons to forget about this application (at least for time being)
o in this release there is ONLY Motorola binary so if have black
hardware you can try out this app.
o this is in a way a test release of a possible shareware product so
even it is completely free you have to contact me to make it fully
functional (printing is disables without a license key)

Keywords: typeface selection problem, automatically generated documents (typeface profiles and specimen pages), new Font Panel(s) allowing selection from many different type families, design with type

Where can you get it?
---------------------

I have uploaded FontAnalyzer package to following ftp-archives:

ftp://ftp.cs.orst.edu/pub/next/submissions/FontAnalyzer-PreAlpha1.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-muenchen.de/pub/comp/platforms/next/submissions/FontAnalyzer-PreAlpha1.tar.gz

Where they end up I do not know but FontAnalyzer is primarily a font utility so something like /Fonts/Apps or Utilities could the right place for it.

Guessing game:
ftp://ftp.cs.orst.edu/pub/next/binaries/fonts/FontAnalyzer-PreAlpha1.tar.gz ??
ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-muenchen.de/pub/comp/platforms/next/Fonts/apps/FontAnalyzer-PreAlpha1.tar.gz

Supported CPU's and OS version requirements
-------------------------------------------
Motorola binary only (this release)
NS3.0 was the development environment.

FontAnalyzer Overview
---------------------
In short FontAnalyzer.app is a font profiler and type-specimen generator. It is also much more than that. It is most of all an utility for someone who works often with different typefaces and gets confused about all different characteristics that they may have or may not have.
It doesn't do a particularly good job in analyzing the the contents of a font but that should be improved by next release.
This application was developed on my free time so it is not a polished product. However if there is enough interested I could turn this into a shareware product which acts like a real NeXTSTEP application.
The principle idea is to let the computer do what it can do best: calculations, repetitions, etc. If I have done it intelligently the application can give you valuable information about the typeface/typefaces you are interested in.
There are few new features whose useability I am testing in this application so everything doesn't necessarily happen as you might expect. I have tried to keep the new user interfaces as easy and natural as possible but I may have failed...
This application is freeware but registration is required to enable printing so see License Keys (in Info menu or in Help Panel) for details.

Known bugs:
(Oct 18th 1994)
Document Type 4 fails somehow on the first try ???
menu items are not updated correctly. E.g. "Select all" is valid all the time but e.g., it doesn't do anything when no Text object is selected (should select all Text objects).
