MSMail.1.1.README README for MSMail v1.1 beta If you have ever received a WINMAIL.DAT attachment from a Windows user and cursed the massive waste of bandwidth, then this program will not do much for you. However, if you have ever received important materials from an associate attached to an Internet message in Microsoft Mail or Exchange format, then you may be relieved to know that you now have an option to decode these attachments under NEXTSTEP, OPENSTEP, and soon under Rhapsody. INTRODUCTION MSMail.app registers to open "winmail.dat" as well as mime-attachment files whose MIME Content Type is "MS-TNEF", and display any enclosed attachments by name. Double-clicking the enclosed attachment's name will open the file, whose original date/time-stamp is preserved when it is recreated on the local system. If you have Opener.app installed, then ZIP files and other enclosed attachments which are compressed will be automatically opened with no further interaction. All in all, most enclosed attachments can be viewed in their native format with only two double-click events. This is probably faster than teaching someone on the other end how to make their Microsoft Windows Messaging application follow Internet standards instead of using proprietary Microsoft formats. Version 1.0 of MSMail.app is free as a beta release, and it is hoped that you will send comments on how well it works with various attachments. Limited testing shows compatibility with Microsoft Exchange over the past twenty months. SUPPORT CPU: NeXT, Intel, Hewlett-Packard PA_RISC, Sun SPARC OS: NEXTSTEP 3.x (w/Foundation & EOF), OPENSTEP 4.x CAVEATS * If the mime-attachment has no extension (which happens), or has an extension other than ".dat" (not likely), you will have to manually Command-drag the file to the MSMail.app icon. MSMail must already be running or be installed on the dock for this to work. * Many winmail.dat enclosures contain no attachments, just Rich Text and other information whose proprietary format has not yet been decoded. You are welcome to attempt to decode these on your own and submit your ideas for inclusion in the next release of MSMail.app * There is no provision for saving edits to the file. * You will want to install something like OpenWrite if you want Microsoft Word "DOC" files to be viewable. VERSION HISTORY v1.2 - Improved handling of corrupt or empty files. - Fixed obscure failure case only reached when using NXHost and accessing a file which is not on a shared directory. - Removed EOF requirement and replaced with DBKit (available under OPENSTEP) v1.1 - Fixed major oversight in v1.0 preventing access to attachments. v1.0 - Requires EOF 1.1 (not usually available under OPENSTEP) LOCATION See MSMail.1.1.NIHS.b.tar.gz in this directory.
