This bug prevents the system to do a clean shutdown. After you quit NEXTIME.app old processes still hang around and they seem to lock some resources. Even killing these processes doesn't help :( This bug of occured in OPENSTEP 4.0 and is still present in 4.1 The result: fsck at next boot. Nothing serious but annoying. - MPEG-1 seems to be supported, but isn't included. One Component lists mpeg-1. However only the extensions: mov and qt are recognized. There are also components for handling Pioneer LD and JPEG 1 (and various others) but I need a test movie to test them. I'm just wondering, how I could play LD's? How should I input the data? (I have access to an pioneer LD player) - Bug: Quicktime movies in stereo are handled badly. Sound breaks and stops suddenly. Also the channels are mixed up. This is definitly not a good demonstration :) Even at some positions frames are dropped. - There is much much documentation missing on how to write components. I'm very much interested in playing CD-i on my NEXTSTATION (I can do this under Windows95) but the MPEG-1 decompressor with AUDIO stream support is missing. I already grabbed the CMT from Barkley, but I can't figure out how to write an appropriate decompressor ... Maybe we get some things cleaned up with 4.2 ... (it is noted to be a 'bugfix' release in the Release Notes on NeXTanswers.) Maybe Documentation is handled to be a bug, too ;-) In general Windows95 media players are doing much better then NEXTIME. (Of course they are lacking the beautiful API, but do work and perform well). I'm wondering what quicktimes Steve demonstrated to convince Apple ... I click the "camera" icon...it turns yellow...but the TV still keeps on running. What is wierd about this is that my one little NDCamera.app works as usual and I still can take a still image from the active video source. Whats the problem with NeXTtv.app ? (Mike...did the new DPS stuff brake some behavior NeXTtv was relying upon ?) Aloha Tomi P:S. What about and new "NDLiveVideoView" for Rhapsody so that my PowerBook 3400 and its zoomed video port could be a new host for NeXTtv v5.0 :-)

I don't know about OS 4.1 as NetInfo *server*, but on my stand-alone machine I had a similar problem (ping seg'faulting) and even one (and only one) panic. That happened around the time when my ISP had some DNS trouble, and apparently my NetInfo hosts were in an inconsistent state. I tried to fiddle with all the new 4.x NI caches that I could find in the docs, but no go. When I finally put a new host into NI (the one I couldn't reach) the crashing ping worked again. I suspect the new lookupd/caching is still somewhat unreliable when certain rare conditions occur. To the original poster: if you really can't get anything going without frequent panics, wipe out NI completely, restore from /usr/template/client/etc/netinfo and start again. I finally used the Upgrader.app on the 4.0 system to downgrade from 4.1 to 4.0 on my box at work. I do not think it is netinfo that is causing this problem. Though I do not know what the underlying cause is, I have a hunch. Let me tell you what I experienced. After upgrading to 4.1, I ran fine for about 1 day. The second afternoon, I found that a small set of hosts could not be looked up by the resolver routines. Any executable which relied on the resolver routines were susceptible to a memory violation SIGSEGV. These included telnet, ping, rlogin, ftp, etc. The failure would only occur for hosts whose names were served via DNS, I never experienced this for hosts that were locally found in Netinfo. Manually running nslookup interactively (no name passed on the command line) would succeed. This makes sense though since this connects to the server via TCP, not via the UDP based resolver functions. I waited over a week before downgrading since I did have a workaround. I have a very large network of production Unix hosts so would just rlogin to a box whose name could be resolved, and rlogin to the intended destination from there. I found that if I rebooted the host, all name services would be normal for about 24 hours. When a hostname started failing, if I did nothing and waited about 1 day, it would start working again. #WAG (wild assed guess) mode on I suspect that the problem occurs when lookupd's cache is updated to remove hosts whose cache entries have timed out. If a cached entry is flushed, and the storage for the value is freed while the storage for the key and the pointer to the value is retained, it could result in this type of problem. I am unclear how 2 cycles of this activity could restore a previously failing pointer to proper activity, but I do know that doing nothing, would cause that host to be resolvable the following day. Statistically speaking, I know I do not have a large enough sample size to state any of this for sure, but I do remember what my experience was so take it for what it is worth. #WAG mode off Anyway. I do not think you should address the problem by wiping out and reloading netinfo. Since this would involve a reboot to be trustworthy anyway. I suspect that the previous poster had luck with it simply by virtue of the reboot, not because he rebuilt netinfo. When I did nothing to the configuration, but rebooted I never got the problem again until the following day. I finally backed out of 4.1 since networking is so critical to my day to day job. I did send several bug reports to NeXT on the problem, but I never got a response from a human based on those emails. I will try 4.2 when it is released and see if they fixed the problem, but till then suggest that the only sure cure in 4.1 will involve creating a new netinfo domain to hold all the hosts in your corporate net. You could use either host files or the output of an nslookup 'list domain' to periodically refresh this. I recommend using a separate domain for this so that you can easily get rid of these names when the problem is fixed. Then you can revert to DNS the way the net.gods intended. p.s. I just thought of something. Perhaps it is possible to just put a *really* large timeout setting in the lookupd subsystem for cache entries. This may make things live there for a few weeks at a time. Yeah, a monthly reboot is atrocious but it does not suck as badly as rebooting every other day. -- ___ ___ | James E. First the machine does nothing and the after a while the trap occured. Every kernel trap leaves a core in /, wich seems to came from lookupd. I include below the configuration of lookupd from netinfo. Has somebody a working version which uses NIS(YPAgent), DNS(DNSAgent) and Netinfo(NIAgent) ? Leaving out one of them (as suggested by some news posting) is impossible on the setup used here. Another question: Is this problem new to 4.1, i. e., have somebody Version 4.0 running with a similar setup ? Thanks for any help/infos/replys. I can't get it to work properly with NIS on either NeXT or Intel. (On Intel, I can run the NS3.3 lookupd, and everything that I use -- NIS & DNS -- works fine. On NeXT hardware, this swapout does not work.) The symptom you describe is classic binary-has-a-serious-defect material. You *might* talk to NeXT - maybe there is another update after the one you got. watch the vsize on your lookupd... it may have a leak and be growing so badly that it fills your VM... mine's been up for 5 days, and is less than 2MB VSIZE, and is 400k RSIZE. (I'm running the NS3.3patcha lookupd on an OPENSTEP 4.1/intel system). It was created specifically to divert lengthy flame wars from .misc. news:comp.sys.next.announce Announcements of general interest to the NeXT community (new products, FTP submissions, user group meetings, commercial announcements etc.) This is a moderated newsgroup, meaning that you can't post to it directly. Submissions should be e-mailed to next-announce@digifix.com where the moderator (Scott Anguish) will screen them for suitability. Messages posted to announce should NOT be posted or crossposted to any other comp.sys.next groups. news:comp.sys.next.bugs A place to report verifiable bugs in NeXT-supplied software. Material e-mailed to Bug_NeXT@NeXT.COM is not published, so this is a place for the net community find out about problems when they're discovered. This newsgroup has a very poor signal/noise ratio--all too often bozos post stuff here that really belongs someplace else. It rarely makes sense to crosspost between this and other c.s.n.* newsgroups, but individual reports may be germane to certain non-NeXT- specific groups as well. news:comp.sys.next.hardware Discussions about NeXT-label hardware and compatible peripherals, and non-NeXT-produced hardware (e.g. Intel) that is compatible with NEXTSTEP. In most cases, questions about Intel hardware are better asked in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware. Questions about SCSI devices belong in comp.periphs.scsi. Implemetations discussed include NeXT, Gnu, Stepstone, etc. news:comp.object Technical talk about OOP in general. Lots of C++ discussion, but NeXT and Objective-C get quite a bit of attention.
