From: Art Isbell <arti@lava.net> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: OPENSTEP Crash Trap submitted to ftp.next.peak.org Date: 1 Dec 1997 07:03:49 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <65tngl$gre$1@news.digifix.com> Source for OEObject, an OPENSTEP crash trap class, has been submitted to ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/. It will probably migrate to openstep/multi-platforms/sourcelibrary/classes. The submission includes a gzip archive for Mach and OSE plus a compressed archive for Solaris. Description OEObject is a free NSObject class poser that is designed to trap several types of application errors that would normally lead to an abnormal termination. These errors include various fatal signals, messages sent to freed objects, and messages that aren't recognized by the receiver. OEObject can be used to log a stack backtrace to help identify a programming error even when a process isn't run under gdb. It can also be used to prevent the process from crashing thus allowing the user to try to continue or to gracefully exit the process, possibly saving changes, instead of the process just disappearing or the dreaded Dr. Watson (Windows) rearing its ugly head. OEObject was originally a NEXTSTEP class called ObjectError which morphed into HKCrashTrap, at least one commercial crash catcher, and possibly other versions, but it has now been ported to OPENSTEP as OEObject. During the porting process, the stack backtrace message was reformatted to provide a little better info about method arguments. Support for Windows exceptions and end-of-line characters was also added. Usage Add OEObject to an app or tool project or to the project of a framework that is loaded by apps and tools. Send OEObject a setup message early in the process' execution. If you want the process to try to continue execution after a normally fatal error has occurred, send OEObject a setContinueAfterError: message with YES as its argument. If you want to provide users with an indication that a crash condition has occurred, then catch the exception raised by OEObject and implement the user alert in the exception handler. Several defaults variables are provided to adjust the number of function arguments printed (default is 4), the maximum number of frames printed in the backtrace (default is 50), and the maximum argument description length printed in the backtrace (default is 255 bytes). The names of the exception and the defaults variables are returned by OEObject methods to avoid problems passing global constants in the Windows environment. When OEObject isn't configured to continue execution after a fatal error, a crash backtrace is printed by NSLog(). Under Windows NT, backtraces are printed in the Application event log which is viewable using Event Viewer. An example project, CrashTrap, is included. This was ported to OPENSTEP from the HKCrashTrap distribution. Known Problems Using OEObject with gdb can be problematic because OEObject can intercept signals that gdb uses to break on errors. Using a defaults variable to turn off OEObject during a debugging session is a convenient solution. No support for PowerPC is included.

From: Dwight Everhart <everhart@alterlife.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: Chronographer 1.02 -- A daily planner application Date: 2 Dec 1997 20:35:32 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <661rek$9ku$1@news.digifix.com> Chronographer -- A daily planner application Dwight Everhart everhart@alterlife.com December 2, 1997 UPDATE ====== The commercial version of Chronographer has finally been released. Several major features have been added since the last publicly-announced version, including: o Appointments, to-do items, and tasks can now be entered by typing them directly into a schedule. Creating roles, goals, and tasks is no longer required. If you wish to use Chronographer only for scheduling appointments, you can forget about the Roles & Goals hierarchy entirely. o Existing items are now editable in place. Previously the inspector panel had to be used, but now the titles of appointments, to-do items, and tasks can be edited simply by selecting the item and then single-clicking it. o Like the titles of items, their priorities can also now be edited in place. Just click on the priority and start editing. o A box has been added to the left of each priority. It is used to display checkmarks which indicate the completion status of to-do items and tasks. It can be checked or unchecked by clicking on it. o The file format used to store the roles, goals, tasks, and appointments has been changed from a NeXT-specific binary one (typed streams) to a text format, ensuring portability to Rhapsody, Windows 95/NT, and Mac OS, when Chronographer is released for those platforms. o As a side effect of the new file format, saving is now significantly faster. o Chronographer now has its own domain on the Internet. You can now find its web site at http://www.chronographer.com/. DESCRIPTION =========== Chronographer is an application designed to help you to organize not only your time but also your priorities in life. Instead of just keeping track of appointments, Chronographer also keeps track of the goals that these appointments further, so you can easily determine if what you are doing today is helping you to accomplish what you want to do this week, this month, this year, and this decade. Instead of just asking yourself, "What needs to be done and when do I need to do it?", Chronographer encourages you to first ask, "What do I want to accomplish in life?" and then ask, "What do I need to do in order to achieve these goals?" Chronographer focuses on the long term as well as the short term. Chronographer's time-management concepts are based, in part, on principles developed by Stephen R. Covey and presented in his books The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and First Things First. Chronographer helps you to organize your life by establishing a hierarchy of roles and goals. Out of these roles and goals appointments are scheduled. Chronographer allows you to set a time budget for each role or goal, and it provides you with instant summaries of how much time you've actually spent on each item. It also provides a detailed report of how you've spent your time. FEATURES ======== o A browser to organize your activities by grouping them into roles and goals. o Schedules for keeping track of appointments. Day, week, month, and year schedule views are available. In the day and week schedules, appointments are displayed in colored boxes. Schedule detail can be set to one line for every 60, 30, 15, or 5 minutes. In the month view, a filter can be used to intelligently control which appointments and to-do items are displayed. o To-do lists for keeping track of appointments that don't have specific times associated with them. Each day, week, month, and year has its own to-do list. To-do items can be filtered so that only certain groups of them are displayed. o A button bar for selecting nearby dates, making navigation easy and fast. o Repeating appointments. They can repeat every day, week, month, or year or any multiple of those periods. o Appointment reminders using a panel, email, sound, or combination. o A time report that lists, in detail, how you spent your time. This could be a useful tool for consultants who need to keep track of how much time they spend on each of their projects. It could also be useful for employees who have to report their time usage to their managers. o Easy drag-and-drop interface. Once you type an appointment's title, you never have to type it again. Just drag the appointment to a schedule or to-do list to schedule it. Alternatively, you can just click on a schedule and type the appointment directly. Appointment durations can be changed by dragging the edges of the appointment. Appointments can be moved easily by dragging them to another location on the schedule or to another day's schedule or to a to-do list. AVAILABILITY ============ You can download Chronographer from its web site at http://www.chronographer.com/Download/. The page lists the sites where Chronographer is available. Just click on the site nearest you. The release is binary-only and includes software for NeXT, Intel, HP-PA, and SPARC hardware. It will run on NEXTSTEP versions 3.2 and later and on all versions of OPENSTEP for Mach. Chronographer is a commercial product. However, you are welcome to try it for free until February 1, 1998. It is fully functional during the trial period. If you wish to continue using it after that time, you'll need to purchase a license for US$40 per user.

From: Dwight Everhart <everhart@alterlife.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: Chronographer 1.02 Date: 25 Nov 1997 21:46:24 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <65fgvg$rsu$1@news.digifix.com> Chronographer -- A daily planner application Dwight Everhart everhart@chronographer.com November 25, 1997 UPDATE ====== Chronographer version 1.02 has been released. It should fix the data corruption problems in versions 1.00 and 1.01. (Version 1.01 was an interim bug-fix release. Its fixes are included in this release.) Features added: o Registration has been made easier. Now, when you purchase a license, a registration file will be sent to you by email (as a MIME attachment). Just double-click on the file, and Chronographer will automatically read it and register itself -- no more need to copy and paste the information. Of course, if Chronographer was installed as root, you'll still need to run it as root to register. Bugs fixed: o Users on "big-endian" hardware (NeXT, SPARC, and HP-PA) experienced appointment data corruption because of a byte-order bug. Specifically, it caused appointments' repeat frequency, repeat interval, and schedule level to be read as zeros instead of whatever value they had in the file. This caused repeating appointments to be turned into non-repeating appointments and to-do items to be turned into midnight appointments. When you run version 1.02 for the first time, if you were affected by the bug, and you still have the automatic backup of your data that version 1.00 made before converting it, Chronographer will ask you if you want to revert your data to the backup. I recommend that you do, unless you know that you weren't seriously affected by the bug. I am very sorry for this bug. Since I do Chronographer's development on Intel hardware, the bug didn't appear in my testing. If I had done some testing on my cube, I would've seen the bug. I apologize for not doing so. o Chronographer would crash on launch for some people. o Pasting a task appeared to work at first, but the task wasn't actually grafted into the hierarchy, and it disappeared the next time its goal was displayed. o Pasting roles or goals failed to hook up the pasted item's children to their parent correctly. o The day schedule did not scroll correctly to the current time for some people. These new features and fixed bugs are also described in Chronographer's release notes. Choose the Info-->Release Notes command to see them. AVAILABILITY ============ Chronographer is now being distributed in multiple packages: one quad-fat package and four single-architecture packages, one for each of the four hardware platforms supported by NEXTSTEP. You can download Chronographer from its web page at http://www.chronographer.com/download.html. NOTE: I've experienced problems installing the quad-fat package when using the Installer app under OpenSesame. If it quits unexpectedly, log in as root to install Chronographer. Chronographer is a commercial product. However, you are welcome to try it for free until February 1, 1998. If you wish to continue using it after that time, you'll need to purchase a license for US$40 per user. -- Dwight Everhart "strong man is survivor / he live to pound Bella Vista, Arkansas little wooden crosses in the bloody ground everhart@alterlife.com he fit and dominant / he stand a chance PGP mail welcome he not bow to circumstance" -- Mark Heard, "How to Grow Up Big and Strong"

COMP.SYS.NEXT.HARDWARE Discussions about NeXT-label hardware and compatible peripherals, and non-NeXT-produced hardware (e.g. Intel) that is compatible with NEXTSTEP. You can request documents by fax or Internet electronic mail, read them on the world-wide web, transfer them by anonymous ftp, or download them from the BBS. NeXTanswers is an automated retrieval system. Requests sent to it are answered electronically, and are not read or handled by a human being. NeXTanswers does not answer your questions or forward your requests. USING NEXTANSWERS BY E-MAIL To use NeXTanswers by Internet e-mail, send requests to nextanswers@next.com. Files are sent as NeXTmail attachments by default; you can request they be sent as ASCII text files instead. To request a file, include that file's ID number in the Subject line or the body of the message. You can request several files in a single message. You can also include commands in the Subject line or the body of the message. These commands affect the way that files you request are sent: ASCII causes the requested files to be sent as ASCII text SPLIT splits large files into 95KB chunks, using the MIME Message/Partial specification REPLY-TO address sets the e-mail address NeXTanswers uses These commands return information about the NeXTanswers system: HELP returns this help file INDEX returns the list of all available files INDEX BY DATE returns the list of files, sorted newest to oldest SEARCH keywords lists all files that contain all the keywords you list (ignoring capitalization) For example, a message with the following Subject line requests three files: Subject: 2101 2234 1109 A message with this body requests the same three files be sent as ASCII text files: 2101 2234 1109 ascii This message requests two lists of files, one for each search: Subject: SEARCH Dell SCSI SEARCH NetInfo domain NeXTanswers will reply to the address in your From: line. To use a different address either set your Reply-To: line, or use the NeXTanswers command REPLY-TO If you have any problem with the system or suggestions for improvement, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY FAX To use NeXTanswers by fax, call (415) 780-3990 from a touch-tone phone and follow the instructions. You'll be asked for your fax number, a number to identify your fax (like your phone extension or office number), and the ID numbers of the files you want. You can also request a list of available files. When you finish entering the file numbers, end the call and the files will be faxed to you. If you have problems using this fax system, please call Technical Support at 1-800-848-6398. You cannot use the fax system outside the U.S & Canada. USING NEXTANSWERS VIA THE WORLD-WIDE WEB To use NeXTanswers via the Internet World-Wide Web connect to NeXT's web server at URL http://www.next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY ANONYMOUS FTP To use NeXTanswers by Internet anonymous FTP, connect to FTP.NEXT.COM and read the help file pub/NeXTanswers/README. If you have problems using this, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY MODEM To use NeXTanswers via modem call the NeXTanswers BBS at (415) 780-2965. Log in as the user "guest", and enter the Files section. From there you can download NeXTanswers documents. FOR MORE HELP... If you need technical support for NEXTSTEP beyond the information available from NeXTanswers, call the Support Hotline at 1-800-955-NeXT (outside the U.S. call +1-415-424-8500) to speak to a NEXTSTEP Technical Support Technician. If your site has a NeXT support contract, your site's support contact must make this call to the hotline. Otherwise, hotline support is on a pay-per-call basis. Thanks for using NeXTanswers! _________________________________________________________________ Written by: Eric P. From: Jason Fosback <jfosback@pscwa.psca.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: PopOver v1.6 quad fat Date: 3 Dec 1997 21:28:14 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <664ite$edu$1@news.digifix.com> OVERVIEW PopOver version 1.6 is now available quad fat. Several critical bugs have been fixed since version 1.5, and a couple of new features have been added. The latest version is available on the PopOver home page: http://www.eidolonsoftware.com/ In addtion, it has been uploaded to two FTP sites: ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/mail/ PopOver.1.6.NIHS.bd.tar.gz PopOver.1.6.NIHS.README ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-muenchen.de/pub/comp/platforms/next/submissions PopOver.v1.6.NIHS.bd.tar.gz PopOver.v1.6.NIHS.bd.tar.gz.README Most likely moving to: ftp.informatik.uni-muenchen.de:/pub/comp/platforms/next/Mail/apps CHANGES * Added support for APOP authentication * Reduced CPU usage during host configuration * Checked for result during POP3 log out * Fixed a bug in the POP3 protocol introduced in v1.4 which would cause leading dots to be added to mail prefixed by a period. Many thanks to Axel Habermann for finding many of these bugs! ADDITIONAL INFORMATION PopOver ------- PopOver is a program designed to retrieve your mail from remote mail hosts. It is most useful in a situation where: * An organization has a centralized mail server * You are not directly connected to a network * You're in a mixed network and want to use NeXTmail The remote mail hosts can be any machine which provides POP3, POP2, or IMAP2 services. If you don't know if your mail hosts provide any of these services, contact your system administrator. PopOver is an extremely easy to use and well tested mail client that can be used to retrieve your mail. It works independently of what mail reader you use; it simply retrieves your mail. The good news about this is that you can use NeXTmail, with the ease and convenience of Mail.app. For people who use SLIP, or people that are familiar with cron jobs, a Unix command-line interface is provided to simply retrieve your mail with a single command. Extensive help information is available through the NEXTSTEP 3.x interface. PopOver has been well tested on several different mail servers. Great detail has gone into locking and re-entrance, as well as compliance with various RFCs. PopOver will only delete mail messages on remote hosts that are retrieved properly (or will leave them. See the help panels for more information). Since PopOver was originally designed for users of low-speed modem connections, this is extremely valuable if there is a transmission error. PopOver does not require root privilege to use, and should NOT be run suid. It can be dragged into ~/Apps or /LocalApps, and the Unix command line version can be placed in ~/bin, or /usr/local/bin. I sincerely hope that this program proves useful. -jason jfosback@eidolonsoftware.com http://www.eidolonsoftware.com/

The site provides an informal collection of pointers, references, and starting points for developers who are using the Prelude to Rhapsody bundle, distributed at this year's Worldwide Developer Conference. OpenStep/NEXTSTEP/Rhapsody Related Usenet Newsgroups ==================================================== COMP.SYS.NEXT.ADVOCACY This is the "why NEXTSTEP is better (or worse) than anything else in the known universe" forum. It was created specifically to divert lengthy flame wars from .misc. COMP.SYS.NEXT.ANNOUNCE Announcements of general interest to the NeXT community (new products, FTP submissions, user group meetings, commercial announcements etc.) This is a moderated newsgroup, meaning that you can't post to it directly. Submissions should be e-mailed to next-announce@digifix.com where the moderator (Scott Anguish) will screen them for suitability. Messages posted to announce should NOT be posted or crossposted to any other comp.sys.next groups. COMP.SYS.NEXT.BUGS A place to report verifiable bugs in NeXT-supplied software. Material e-mailed to Bug_NeXT@NeXT.COM is not published, so this is a place for the net community find out about problems when they're discovered. This newsgroup has a very poor signal/noise ratio--all too often bozos post stuff here that really belongs someplace else. It rarely makes sense to crosspost between this and other c.s.n.* newsgroups, but individual reports may be germane to certain non-NeXT-specific groups as well. COMP.SYS.NEXT.HARDWARE Discussions about NeXT-label hardware and compatible peripherals, and non-NeXT-produced hardware (e.g. Intel) that is compatible with NEXTSTEP. In most cases, questions about Intel hardware are better asked in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware. Questions about SCSI devices belong in comp.periphs.scsi. This isn't the place to buy or sell used NeXTs--that's what .marketplace is for. COMP.SYS.NEXT.MARKETPLACE NeXT stuff for sale/wanted. Material posted here must not be crossposted to any other c.s.n.* newsgroup, but may be crossposted to misc.forsale.computers.workstation or appropriate regional newsgroups. COMP.SYS.NEXT.MISC For stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else. Anything you post here by definition doesn't belong anywhere else in c.s.n.*--i.e. no crossposting!!! COMP.SYS.NEXT.PROGRAMMER Questions and discussions of interest to NEXTSTEP programmers. This is primarily a forum for advanced technical material. Generic UNIX questions belong elsewhere (comp.unix.questions), although specific questions about NeXT's implementation or porting issues are appropriate here. Note that there are several other more "horizontal" newsgroups (comp.lang.objective-c, comp.lang.postscript, comp.os.mach, comp.protocols.tcp-ip, etc.) that may also be of interest. COMP.SYS.NEXT.SOFTWARE This is a place to talk about [third party] software products that run on NEXTSTEP systems. COMP.SYS.NEXT.SYSADMIN Stuff relating to NeXT system administration issues; in rare cases this will spill over into .programmer or .software. ** RELATED NEWSGROUPS ** COMP.SOFT-SYS.NEXTSTEP Like comp.sys.next.software and comp.sys.next.misc combined. Exists because NeXT is a software-only company now, and comp.soft-sys is for discussion of software systems with scope similar to NEXTSTEP. COMP.LANG.OBJECTIVE-C Technical talk about the Objective-C language. Implemetations discussed include NeXT, Gnu, Stepstone, etc. COMP.OBJECT Technical talk about OOP in general. Lots of C++ discussion, but NeXT and Objective-C get quite a bit of attention. At times gets almost philosophical about objects, but then again OOP allows one to be a programmer/philosopher. (The original comp.sys.next no longer exists--do not attempt to post to it.) Exception to the crossposting restrictions: announcements of usenet RFDs or CFVs, when made by the news.announce.newgroups moderator, may be simultaneously crossposted to all c.s.n.* newsgroups. This system allows you to request online technical documents, drivers, and other software, which are then sent to you automatically. Most go out in less than 24 hours. Postings that require editing because they do not contain information in a useable format, or have already been posted to other comp.sys.next.* groups may be delayed, or returned to you. If your posting is rejected, I'll try and make suggestions about what should be changed where possible. Obviously off charter messages (spams, open-letters, etc) may not get a response. Content Guidelines ================== Try to keep submissions short and concise (80-100 lines max). Include full instructions on contacting you (where applicable) All Postings e-mail address, telephone (optional) Press Release toll-free voice phone, toll-free fax, voice phone, fax phone mailing address,info@blahblah.com,retail price, educational price availability Software available ftp site full path to file IN URL FORMAT supported CPU's for binary distributions, OS version requirements Meeting Announcements location of meeting, time of meeting, speakers expected Signatures will be deleted automatically, so please don't rely on your .sig for the contact information Please double check all information you are posting for accuracy. If you are announcing software available by FTP, make sure the copy on the archive site is good. Announcement of Product Sales ============================= This is an area of announcement that has caused me terrible grief in the past. The policy is tilted towards the ISV, which has worked out well in the past. Posts that announce sales of products that you are DIRECTLY involved in the development of are OK. Posts from companies trying to sell other products are evaluated on an individual basis. Time Sensitive Announcements ============================ Many times an announcement should coincide with a specific date. Unfortunately, that can be the worst time for you to get access to your internet connection to send the announcements to comp.sys.next.announce. In order to make comp.sys.next.announce as timely as possible, I will accept "post-dated" announcements for release on a specific future date. All information will be kept confidential until the requested release date, and NDAs will be signed where required to ensure this. Hopefully this will make these announcements arrive at users sites as quickly as if you posted them directly to comp.sys.next.whatever. Submissions can be sent to next-announce@digifix.com. From: scott@doubleu.com (Scott Hess) Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: Rhapsody version of TimeMon. Date: 16 Dec 1997 20:50:22 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <676pie$iva$1@news.digifix.com> The Mission Critical Custom Application know as TimeMon has been ported to Rhapsody Developer Release. Find it at http://www.doubleu.com/TimeMon.html or ftp://ftp.doubleu.com/pub/TimeMon-4.0.tar.gz. An Intel binary is provided, along with source which is expected to compile under PPC with no problems. Excerpts from the README: <snip> TimeMon gives a graphical representation of where the CPU cycles are going. Version 4.0 requires OPENSTEP 4.x/Mach or Rhapsody, and can run on M68K, Intel, Sparc or PowerPC hardware. Version 4.0 is basically the OPENSTEP port of TimeMon3.2, there are no new features. <snip> TimeMon displays this [CPU usage] information within the program's icon. There are three rings displayed. The innermost ring is updated according to the Update Period, which specifies the number of seconds between updates, and Lag Time which specifies how many update periods should be averaged together for the innermost ring. The middle ring is an average of the last Layer Factor update periods, and the outer ring is an average of the values over the course of the square of the Layer Factor update periods. The values in the fields are automagically stored in the user's defaults database. <snip> Well, that's probably more confusing than it needs to be, just download it and try it. The MiscKit is a free to use framework of classes and example code for Rhapsody, Apple's next generation operating system. This new ftp mirror contains the entire MiscKit software distribution including all previously released versions of the MiscKit. It also contains a rich collection of classic literature in RTF format, Don Yacktman's GameKit software, and the source code to an Apple ][ emulator. The software archive, provided by Ensuing Technologies, may be accessed at ftp://ftp2.misckit.com/ . "The MiscKit is continuing to expand, with many improvements underway," said Don Yacktman, the kit's maintainer. "This new service underscores the commitment we made last July to support Rhapsody developers. It is the first of many planned changes which are intended to make the MiscKit a quality collection of free source code for Rhapsody developers." The MiscKit commitment to Rhapsody is very strong. Included in that commitment is the promise to convert over 100 reusable classes from the NEXTSTEP version of the MiscKit to be compatible with Apple's next generation Yellow Box technology. The early versions of the Yellow Box MiscKit, which are available now, contain much of this work as well as many new objects designed specifically to enhance the Yellow Box. Because the MiscKit is free to use and contains such a rich base of code, it is a very powerful tool for all Rhapsody developers. "The MiscKit has grown tremendously because the developer community has unselfishly contributed to it," added Don Yacktman. "The latest contribution by Ensuing is one of many examples of this, and it is greatly appreciated. I am excited to see the complete archive once again made publically available." "We are pleased that this move will give the Macintosh developer community access to the quality framework and source code of MiscKit," said Karl Kraft, president of Ensuing Technologies. Further information about the MiscKit is available from the MiscKit web site at http://www.misckit.com/ or by emailing don@misckit.com. -30- -------- All trademarks mentioned belong to their respective owners. From: Stefan Schneider <stefan@ping.at> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: ANNOUNCE: LatinByrd III Version 5 Date: 19 Dec 1997 22:09:55 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <67erbj$sl2$1@news.digifix.com> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Stefan Schneider Software Lerchenfelder St. 85/6 A-1070 Vienna, Austria, Europe +43-1-523-5834 stefan@ping.at http://members.ping.at/stefan/ ANNOUNCING THE RELEASE OF LATINBYRD III VERSION 5 Vienna, December 18, 1997 -- LatinByrd III Version 5 has been made publically available. This is the first official release version of LatinByrd III. Update from previous versions (LB II through LB III Beta 4) is free to registered users - please reuse your current license keys. New in LatinByrd III v5, compared to b4: - Alternate text to display instead of images You can now specify an alternate text for each of your images. (When the display of images is turned off in the user's browser, these texts will be shown within the empty image borders.) To specify an alternate text for an image, insert a marker directly behind that image, and enter the desired text in Edit's Marker Inspector. - Storing all images in the image subfolder In the 'Files & Folders' preferences, you can now specify that all of your documents' images shall be stored in the given subfolder, regardless of whether they're indeed shared by at least two documents or not. This option will keep the remainder of your document tree completely free of images. - Various bug fixes - French UI and on-line help DOWNLOAD http://www.noir.net/sss/LatinByrd.IIIv5.NIHS.b.tar.gz (2239700 bytes) http://www.noir.net/sss/LatinByrd.IIIv5.README (7199 bytes) http://www.noir.net/sss/LatinByrd.IIIv5.LISEZMOI (4323 bytes) http://www.noir.net/sss/LatinByrd.IIIv5.LIESMICH (7273 bytes) LatinByrd III v5 is compiled quad-fat, requires NEXTSTEP 3.2 or higher - or OPENSTEP 4.x for Mach - and is fully localized to English, French, and German, including on-line help. GENERAL PRODUCT INFO LatinByrd is an RTF/RTFD to HTML converter, and a TIFF/EPS to GIF/PNG/JPEG image converter. LatinByrd converts RTF documents, RTFD documents, and ASCII documents to web pages in HTML format. LatinByrd converts single documents as well as document trees. In addition, LatinByrd also converts TIFF and EPS images to GIF, PNG, and JPEG graphics formats. Note: LatinByrd is optimized to convert documents which are in NeXT's version of RTF. Converting RTF documents created on other platforms may deliver poor results. Note: For LatinByrd to display the contents of GIF, PNG, and JPEG files in its image wells, you need to have an image filter application installed. ToyViewer.app is strongly recommended, as it can handle the new PNG format as well as ProgressiveJPEG. ToyViewer is freeware - get it now if you still don't have a copy. LatinByrd is a commercial product. Fully licensable demo. FREE time-limited test keys available. Just send email. PRICE Commercial license: US$ 119 Academic license: US$ 69 Image conversion only: US$ 49 (sorry, no academic discount) FURTHER INFOS For information on how to purchase a license key for LatinByrd III, please contact Stefan Schneider Software at <stefan@ping.at>, or visit us at http://members.ping.at/stefan/index.html. Questions and comments to next-announce-request@digifix.com

Getting the Newsgroups without getting News =========================================== Thanks to Michael Ross at antigone.com, the main NEXTSTEP groups are now available as a mailing list digest as well. next-nextstep next-advocacy next-announce next-bugs next-hardware next-marketplace next-misc next-programmer next-software next-sysadmin object lang-objective-c (For a full description, send mail to listserv@antigone.com). This system allows you to request online technical documents, drivers, and other software, which are then sent to you automatically. From: Olaf Mueller <olaf@orest.escape.de> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: OlafAM.1.0.6 - the programmable voice/fax/data machine Date: 23 Dec 1997 21:09:56 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <67p9b4$357$1@news.digifix.com> The programmable voice/fax machine OlafAM ver 1.0.6 for NeXT Computers and selected modems is available now at ftp://peanuts.leo.org/pub/comp/platforms/next/Communication/apps/OlafAM.1.0.6.NIHS.b.tar.gz ftp://peanuts.leo.org/pub/comp/platforms/next/Communication/apps/OlafAM.1.0.6.README Here the contents of the README: OlafAM a programmable Voice/Fax/Data machine for Computers running NextStep and selected Modems This release 1.0.6 is an update version of the release 1.0.4 These are the most important improvements: * The fax printer, dialer and call archive can now be used public. * You can manage roles for use in a network. * You can configure a page header for outgoing faxes. * The call archive can be sorted for any item. * Some more modems will work together with this version. * Lines without a dial tone can now be handled. * Caller ID detection can now be handled (interesting may be only for US people). * Command line faxing. * You can execute a command in the background by adding '&' to an exec command in the AML program. What is OlafAM ? ---------------- You can: telephone like before. OlafAM.app can dial for you. configure the behavior of the answering machine for your own purpose. You can play messages, reading digits entered by the caller, and invoke actions depending on the results of this input. You are able to listen to recorded voices from a remote place, and you can leave a message for friends. You are able to build a "Fax On Demand" machine. Received calls can be delivered to your mailbox, and a simple doubleClick will play it. send faxes using the PrintPanel This means, that you can fax everything you can print. receive faxes Received faxes can be delivered to your mailbox, and a simple doubleClick will display it. receive data calls Everybody can dial into your computer, if this feature is enabled. make data calls Use PPP, uucp or other programs to call out into the wide world of data communications. Requirements ------------ This software is built with white NS3.3 and tested on white, black ('040) and yellow NS3.3. It will probably also run on green computers and on computers running OpenSTEP 4.x. Following modems work more or less together with this software: ZyXEL U1496 serie (voice/fax/data modem) ZyXEL E2864 serie (voice/fax/data modem) ZyXEL Omni288 serie (voice/fax/data modem) Creatix SG 2834 turbo (voice/fax/data modem) Creatix SG 2834 (fax/data modem) Trust (fax/data modem) GVC (fax/data modem) BocaModem (fax/data modem) ELSA MicroLink 28.8TQV (voice/fax/data modem) USR Sportster (voice/fax/data modem) Other modems including a ROCKWELL chipset will probably also work. Modems only supporting Class2.0 Fax should also work. People who help me to support a modem, which does not work together with this software, will get a free permanent licence. Use --- If no licence string is entered, this package will run in demo mode. That means: * Incoming voices are limited to 4 seconds. * Regarding digits entered by caller disabled. * Incoming faxes are disabled. * Outgoing faxes are limited to 1 page. * Incoming data calls are limited to 1 minute. You can order a licence for 10 days for free, which enables all functions. You can order a permanent licence for each feature, either voice or fax or data with following prices: Voice Fax Data All 50US$ 50US$ 20US$ 100US$ This version will be free for owners of a valid licence for previous versions. Answering machine programs -------------------------- Answering Machine programs will be written in the language "AnsweringMachineLanguage" (AML). It is simple and sufficient for (nearly) all cases, i can imagine. You can have as many programs as you like. So you are able to configure your telephone today as a private machine and tomorrow as a fax-on-demand machine. The most important improvements of release 1.0.4: * Some more modems will work together with this version. * German and (almost) French localization. * A Fax reader similar to the Voice reader (or listener). * Incoming data calls should be handled with more gracefulness. * Addressbook implementation now cooporates with the WorkSpace. * Addressbook and Dial Logbook can be printed. * Incoming voice calls can be listened without be logged in (if you have a D/V button like ZyXEL modems). * ZyXEL's voice format ADPCM4 can now be used (but does it improve the voice quality?). * The field "eMail" in the addressbook can now be used to compose a mail. Apple Computer's 'Prelude to Rhapsody' Self Support Site http://devworld.apple.com/dev/prelude.html This site has been constructed to help you help yourself to learn as much as possible about the foundation for Rhapsody, today's OPENSTEP. Author: Chris Saldanha <csaldanh@acm.org> http://www.mae.carleton.ca/~csaldanh/ Here's the whole README file for the bundle: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- README for Inspector is a tri-fat (sorry, I didn't have an HP-PA compiled MiscKit, it'll be in the next version, I promise) module for the NeXTSTEP/OpenStep Workspace Manager (i.e. the File Viewer), which adds a Contents inspector panel allowing you to browse around inside various kinds of multi-file archives: -.tar -.tar.Z -.tar.gz -.compressed -.zip You may also extract individual files from the archive (only one at a time, at present), or extract all the files at once, to the current directory, or a specified one. Please read the file "LICENSE" for license and usage information, "HELP" for info about how to use this fairly trivial inspector, and the file "INSTALL" for installation notes. If you want to receive email when I post new versions of this software, please email me with your desired email address and I'll add you to my list. I will not give this list to other people. THIS IS BETA SOFTWARE. THIS MEANS THAT THERE ARE LIKELY TO BE BUGS IN THIS SOFTWARE. I am releasing this version with BUGS and TODOusing this program, but I can't guarantee that. I test only on NeXTSTEP 3.3. It should work on OpenStep for Mach, but I haven't tried it (please let me know!). I would appreciate it if people would have a go at trying to break this module, and please report any bugs or feedback/suggestions to me. This program is PostCardWare, which is essentially free software. Usage is governed by the license found in the file LICENSE (PLEASE READ IT!), which came with the distribution. If you didn't get this file, please let me know where you got your copy of this software, and I will happily send you a copy by email. I am not distributing source code for the beta versions of the software, but I will likely do so when the software is in a release state. This program makes use of the MiscKit, version 1.9.0, particularly the MiscString and MiscTree classes. I have written a category on MiscTree that parses pathnames and inserts all the right things into the MiscTree. I'm going to submit that code, when it's a bit more stis excellent collection of free objects, classes and palettes that make NeXTSTEP/OpenStep development even better than usual.
