OpenStep/NEXTSTEP/Rhapsody Related Usenet Newsgroups ==================================================== COMP.SYS.NEXT.ADVOCACY This is the "why NEXTSTEP is better (or worse) than anything else in the known universe" forum. It was created specifically to divert lengthy flame wars from .misc. COMP.SYS.NEXT.ANNOUNCE Announcements of general interest to the NeXT community (new products, FTP submissions, user group meetings, commercial announcements etc.) This is a moderated newsgroup, meaning that you can't post to it directly. Submissions should be e-mailed to next-announce@digifix.com where the moderator (Scott Anguish) will screen them for suitability. Messages posted to announce should NOT be posted or crossposted to any other comp.sys.next groups. COMP.SYS.NEXT.BUGS A place to report verifiable bugs in NeXT-supplied software. Material e-mailed to Bug_NeXT@NeXT.COM is not published, so this is a place for the net community find out about problems when they're discovered. This newsgroup has a very poor signal/noise ratio--all too often bozos post stuff here that really belongs someplace else. It rarely makes sense to crosspost between this and other c.s.n.* newsgroups, but individual reports may be germane to certain non-NeXT-specific groups as well. COMP.SYS.NEXT.HARDWARE Discussions about NeXT-label hardware and compatible peripherals, and non-NeXT-produced hardware (e.g. Intel) that is compatible with NEXTSTEP. In most cases, questions about Intel hardware are better asked in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware. Questions about SCSI devices belong in comp.periphs.scsi. This isn't the place to buy or sell used NeXTs--that's what .marketplace is for. COMP.SYS.NEXT.MARKETPLACE NeXT stuff for sale/wanted. Material posted here must not be crossposted to any other c.s.n.* newsgroup, but may be crossposted to misc.forsale.computers.workstation or appropriate regional newsgroups. COMP.SYS.NEXT.MISC For stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else. Anything you post here by definition doesn't belong anywhere else in c.s.n.*--i.e. no crossposting!!! COMP.SYS.NEXT.PROGRAMMER Questions and discussions of interest to NEXTSTEP programmers. This is primarily a forum for advanced technical material. Generic UNIX questions belong elsewhere (comp.unix.questions), although specific questions about NeXT's implementation or porting issues are appropriate here. Note that there are several other more "horizontal" newsgroups (comp.lang.objective-c, comp.lang.postscript, comp.os.mach, comp.protocols.tcp-ip, etc.) that may also be of interest. COMP.SYS.NEXT.SOFTWARE This is a place to talk about [third party] software products that run on NEXTSTEP systems. COMP.SYS.NEXT.SYSADMIN Stuff relating to NeXT system administration issues; in rare cases this will spill over into .programmer or .software. ** RELATED NEWSGROUPS ** COMP.SOFT-SYS.NEXTSTEP Like comp.sys.next.software and comp.sys.next.misc combined. Exists because NeXT is a software-only company now, and comp.soft-sys is for discussion of software systems with scope similar to NEXTSTEP. COMP.LANG.OBJECTIVE-C Technical talk about the Objective-C language. Implemetations discussed include NeXT, Gnu, Stepstone, etc. COMP.OBJECT Technical talk about OOP in general. Lots of C++ discussion, but NeXT and Objective-C get quite a bit of attention. At times gets almost philosophical about objects, but then again OOP allows one to be a programmer/philosopher. (The original comp.sys.next no longer exists--do not attempt to post to it.) Exception to the crossposting restrictions: announcements of usenet RFDs or CFVs, when made by the news.announce.newgroups moderator, may be simultaneously crossposted to all c.s.n.* newsgroups. This system allows you to request online technical documents, drivers, and other software, which are then sent to you automatically. You can request documents by fax or Internet electronic mail, read them on the world-wide web, transfer them by anonymous ftp, or download them from the BBS. NeXTanswers is an automated retrieval system. Requests sent to it are answered electronically, and are not read or handled by a human being. NeXTanswers does not answer your questions or forward your requests. USING NEXTANSWERS BY E-MAIL To use NeXTanswers by Internet e-mail, send requests to nextanswers@next.com. Files are sent as NeXTmail attachments by default; you can request they be sent as ASCII text files instead. To request a file, include that file's ID number in the Subject line or the body of the message. You can request several files in a single message. You can also include commands in the Subject line or the body of the message. These commands affect the way that files you request are sent: ASCII causes the requested files to be sent as ASCII text SPLIT splits large files into 95KB chunks, using the MIME Message/Partial specification REPLY-TO address sets the e-mail address NeXTanswers uses These commands return information about the NeXTanswers system: HELP returns this help file INDEX returns the list of all available files INDEX BY DATE returns the list of files, sorted newest to oldest SEARCH keywords lists all files that contain all the keywords you list (ignoring capitalization) For example, a message with the following Subject line requests three files: Subject: 2101 2234 1109 A message with this body requests the same three files be sent as ASCII text files: 2101 2234 1109 ascii This message requests two lists of files, one for each search: Subject: SEARCH Dell SCSI SEARCH NetInfo domain NeXTanswers will reply to the address in your From: line. To use a different address either set your Reply-To: line, or use the NeXTanswers command REPLY-TO If you have any problem with the system or suggestions for improvement, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY FAX To use NeXTanswers by fax, call (415) 780-3990 from a touch-tone phone and follow the instructions. You'll be asked for your fax number, a number to identify your fax (like your phone extension or office number), and the ID numbers of the files you want. You can also request a list of available files. When you finish entering the file numbers, end the call and the files will be faxed to you. If you have problems using this fax system, please call Technical Support at 1-800-848-6398. You cannot use the fax system outside the U.S & Canada. USING NEXTANSWERS VIA THE WORLD-WIDE WEB To use NeXTanswers via the Internet World-Wide Web connect to NeXT's web server at URL http://www.next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY ANONYMOUS FTP To use NeXTanswers by Internet anonymous FTP, connect to FTP.NEXT.COM and read the help file pub/NeXTanswers/README. If you have problems using this, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY MODEM To use NeXTanswers via modem call the NeXTanswers BBS at (415) 780-2965. Log in as the user "guest", and enter the Files section. From there you can download NeXTanswers documents. FOR MORE HELP... If you need technical support for NEXTSTEP beyond the information available from NeXTanswers, call the Support Hotline at 1-800-955-NeXT (outside the U.S. call +1-415-424-8500) to speak to a NEXTSTEP Technical Support Technician. If your site has a NeXT support contract, your site's support contact must make this call to the hotline. Otherwise, hotline support is on a pay-per-call basis. Most go out in less than 24 hours. Postings that require editing because they do not contain information in a useable format, or have already been posted to other comp.sys.next.* groups may be delayed, or returned to you. If your posting is rejected, I'll try and make suggestions about what should be changed where possible. Obviously off charter messages (spams, open-letters, etc) may not get a response. Content Guidelines ================== Try to keep submissions short and concise (80-100 lines max). Include full instructions on contacting you (where applicable) All Postings e-mail address, telephone (optional) Press Release toll-free voice phone, toll-free fax, voice phone, fax phone mailing address,info@blahblah.com,retail price, educational price availability Software available ftp site full path to file IN URL FORMAT supported CPU's for binary distributions, OS version requirements Meeting Announcements location of meeting, time of meeting, speakers expected Signatures will be deleted automatically, so please don't rely on your .sig for the contact information Please double check all information you are posting for accuracy. If you are announcing software available by FTP, make sure the copy on the archive site is good. Announcement of Product Sales ============================= This is an area of announcement that has caused me terrible grief in the past. The policy is tilted towards the ISV, which has worked out well in the past. Posts that announce sales of products that you are DIRECTLY involved in the development of are OK. Posts from companies trying to sell other products are evaluated on an individual basis. Time Sensitive Announcements ============================ Many times an announcement should coincide with a specific date. Unfortunately, that can be the worst time for you to get access to your internet connection to send the announcements to comp.sys.next.announce. In order to make comp.sys.next.announce as timely as possible, I will accept "post-dated" announcements for release on a specific future date. All information will be kept confidential until the requested release date, and NDAs will be signed where required to ensure this. Hopefully this will make these announcements arrive at users sites as quickly as if you posted them directly to comp.sys.next.whatever. Submissions can be sent to next-announce@digifix.com. From: Garance A Drosehn <gad@pulse.squonk.net> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: New version of mCD (music CD) for NeXTSTEP Date: 5 Nov 1997 04:32:53 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <63ostl$223$1@news.digifix.com> mCD is written by Garance Alistair Drosehn, email: gad@eclipse.its.rpi.edu mCD.app is a program for listening to music CD's under NeXTSTEP. You will need to be root to setup the program properly, as the executable (mCD.app/mCD) has to be setuid root. If you do not do that, then the program will tell you how to do that when you try to run it. This is the version of mCD as of Oct 26th, 1997 (which I also call "version 0.22", for what that's worth). When starting up mCD, you need to hit the "load" button for the first CD you want to play (you might want to check the preference settings before doing that). After that, you can eject CD's and it will automatically detect when you insert a new one. This is compiled under NeXTSTEP 3.3, and should work on releases 3.2 thru 4.2. It probably won't compile under Rhapsody (although I intend to make a Rhapsody version once I have a Rhapsody machine). For those who have been picking this up off eclipse, the biggest change in this version is that it knows to skip "data tracks" on music CD's (such as the new Genesis, or recent Sarah McLachlan releases). For those who picked this up from other ftp sites, such as peak, there's a number of other changes which might be of interest. Seems I hadn't updated the one on peak since 1995! The program is available at: ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/utils/misc/mCD.README ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/utils/misc/mCD.971026.NIHS.b.tar.gz ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/utils/misc/mCD.971026.s.tar.gz And also at: ftp://eclipse.its.rpi.edu/NeXT/apps/mCD_f/00-README ftp://eclipse.its.rpi.edu/NeXT/apps/mCD_f/mCD-971026-H.tar.gz ftp://eclipse.its.rpi.edu/NeXT/apps/mCD_f/mCD-971026-I.tar.gz ftp://eclipse.its.rpi.edu/NeXT/apps/mCD_f/mCD-971026-N.tar.gz ftp://eclipse.its.rpi.edu/NeXT/apps/mCD_f/mCD-971026-S.tar.gz ftp://eclipse.its.rpi.edu/NeXT/apps/mCD_f/mCD-971026_NIHS.tar.gz ftp://eclipse.its.rpi.edu/NeXT/apps/mCD_f/mCD-971026_src.tar.gz
From: info@caffeineSoft.com Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: Caffeine Software Announce Release of TIFFany3 PR-2 Date: 6 Nov 1997 20:11:00 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <63t88k$pr9$1@news.digifix.com> For Immediate Release For further information, please contact: Caffeine Software info@caffeineSoft.com Caffeine Software Announce Release of TIFFany3 PR-2 November 5, 1997 -- Naters, Switzerland -- Caffeine Software, publishers of TIFFany, the renown image editing package for NeXTSTEP and OpenStep, announce the availability of TIFFany3 PR-2 for OpenStep. TIFFany3 is a high-end image processing application featuring multiple layer document support and the Magic Brush, for which the application has become famous over the past 5 years. TIFFany3 PR-2 is available for the three OpenStep 4.2 architectures as well as a twin-fat binary for Apple's new operating system, code-named Rhapsody. This new twin-fat binary runs on Rhapsody Developer Release for Intel and PowerPC processors. TIFFany3 PR-2 comes with a one-user full floating license which expires on January 15, 1998. This PR-2 release is the second official Beta-Release and features many bug fixes as well as new features and speed enhancements in comparison to the PR-1 release. A complete list of changes can be found at the Caffeine Software web page at http://www.caffeineSoft.com/ Since the PR-2 release is a beta application release running on a pre-beta operating system, we appreciate any comments and suggestions as well as bug reports which any users may have. Such reports should be submitted to bugs@caffeineSoft.com. TIFFany3 is not just a port of the well-known TIFFany2 to Rhapsody but rather an all-new imaging application designed to increase the productivity of today's graphics professionals. It features a multithreaded kernel as well as a smart memory management to keep memory consumption at a minimum. A particular emphasis has been put on the creative tools, which allow the artist to focus on what s/he intends to achieve rather than on the process itself. The included batch manager allows for simple handling of repetitive processes, and the pipelining tool allows the combined application of multiple Actions (such as Sharp and Contrast) at the same time by a simple drag-and-drop definition. The sophisticated open API allows 3rd party developers to extend TIFFany3 by designing specific plug-in modules for customer's needs. Some of TIFFany's key features: * Arbitrary number of layers in arbitrary size, resolution and color space * Arbitrary number of views for each document * Input of any standard bitmap format as well as EPS * Output of JPEG compressed EPS files * Anything that modifies the image in any sort is by definition an Action * Any Action can be used in combination with a brush, marquee or fill * Action Manager for simple management of Actions * Individual Compositing and Filtering settings for each Action * Any combination of Actions can be defined as a Process Action and hence be applied as one individual Action, even for brushing * Over 50 different Actions for color balancing, sharpening, noise reduction, special effects etc. * Get quickly started with over 300 pre-defined parameter sets for Actions, covering various image processing needs. * Automatic image masking by color, region, brightness or any other attribute or a combination thereof * High-quality image scaling and rotating * Undo history for multi-level undo with instant multiple undo and replay * Settable individual Smooth Step for each Marquee, for fade-in effects at Marquee's edges * Binary operations with Marquees (Union, Intersection, Exclusion) * Non-interactive actions applied in the background * "Smart Brush" - does not reapply an Action to previously touched areas in order to avoid undesired multiple effects, even between individual brush strokes. * Any operation can be queued and scheduled for any number of images * Processing daemon - a series of operations can be defined to be applied to any image in a set of specified directories. This allows for a processing server with simple file-drag operation * Open API with sample sources for 3rd party developers For a more complete list of Actions and other features please visit Caffeine Software's web site at: hhtp://www.caffeineSoft.com/ This latest version of TIFFany is the result of several years of experience from customers ranging from the hobby photographer to the world's space agencies. Thanks to the unleashed power of Rhapsody, TIFFany3 represents the most flexible imaging tool yet. For further information, please contact: Caffeine Software info@caffeineSoft.com http://www.caffeineSoft.com/ ~~~ Caffeine Software was founded in 1990. The company quickly specialized in custom image processing for the NeXT computer system. In 1993, Caffeine Software presented TIFFany, a high-end imaging package. Since then, Caffeine Software has extended the product line with other applications for imaging needs while TIFFany maintained it's reputation as the most renown imaging package on NeXTSTEP and OpenStep. From: Hermann Steier <hermann@aaa-plus.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: Joy for Windows Released Date: 7 Nov 1997 20:59:41 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <63vvft$s7p$1@news.digifix.com> JOY FOR WINDOWS RELEASED NEW RAPID SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT TOOL FOR WINDOWS 95 AND NT VIENNA, Austria, November 7, 1997. AAA+ Software today announced the release of "Joy for Windows". Joy is a tool for very quick, interactive software development. Programs developed with Joy run on Windows 95/NT, Apple Rhapsody, and OPENSTEP/Unix, with no porting required. Joy is based on OPENSTEP, a software widely acknowledged as one of the most advanced object-oriented development environments, and used by Apple as the foundation of its new Rhapsody operating system. With Joy, developers can take advantage of the rich object-oriented frameworks of OPENSTEP without the need to get familiar with a complex development environment. Joy boosts developer creativity and productivity by enabling programmers to quickly and interactively try out new ideas. Professional applications can thus be developed step by step, through rapid creation of prototypes. FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS - integration with OPENSTEP's graphical tools for GUI construction - object oriented scripting language to implement program logic - interactive testing of new code without recompiling or even restarting - all methods of classes in OPENSTEP frameworks available in scripts - interactive sending of messages to explore OPENSTEP frameworks - script variables graphically connected to User Interface Objects - inspect and change any object's variables or methods at runtime - definition of new classes and methods at runtime - methods can be implemented for both classes and single instances - internal, invisible use of byte-code compilation to boost performance - free mixing of interpreted scripts and compiled C++, C and Objective-C - scripted methods transparently callable from compiled Objective-C DEPLOY THE SAME CODE FOR APPLE AND WINDOWS Joy extends the OPENSTEP suite of development tools, which is available for Windows 95/NT, Rhapsody and Mach Unix. Regardless where Joy programs are developed, they can be run without modification on all platforms, and adopt their look and feel to the local platform. More than 10,000 registered Apple developers have recently received the prerelease version of Apple's new operating system Rhapsody with Joy already bundled. They can now deploy their Joy programs on Windows. The extensive object-oriented frameworks of OPENSTEP are a key part of the technology that Apple acquired through the merger with NeXT for it's new operating system Rhapsody. Many Fortune 500 companies have successfully used OPENSTEP to build mission critical custom applications and enterprise solutions. The tremendous benefits of this technology are widely acknowledged throughout the industry (Byte magazine called it 'the most respected piece of software on the planet'), yet to master it requires a major investment of time and effort. Joy softens the steep learning curve for Windows developers. The Joy interpreter gives easy and interactive access to the extensive OPENSTEP class libraries that Apple is selling for Windows 95 and Windows NT as part of its OPENSTEP Enterprise product. Joy is based on technology used internally by AAA+ since 1993 to develop large financial applications. It has thus been thoroughly tested and validated in day to day operation. PRICES AND AVAILABILITY A free, fully-enabled evaluation version of Joy is available from http://www.aaa-plus.com/joy/download.html and ftp sites, including ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/openstep/windows/demos/Joy.1.02.w.I.b.tar.gz Introductory pricing for regular licenses is $49 for Joy Explorer and $299 for Joy Developer. On 1 December, 1997 prices are set to increase to $69 and $399, respectively. Joy Explorer is ideal for users who want to explore the class library and develop smaller scale applications, Joy Developer is for users interested in developing large scale applications. Upgrading later from a Joy Explorer license to Joy Developer is possible. OPENSTEP Enterprise is available from AAA+ and Apple's Enterprise Software and Services Division. It is priced at $1499. ABOUT AAA+ SOFTWARE AAA+ creates award-winning financial risk management software for large European banks based on OPENSTEP technology. Starting with the release of Joy, proven technologies originally developed for AAA+ Software's internal use are available to all OPENSTEP developers. AAA+ Software F&E GmbH., headquartered in Vienna, Austria, grew out of a university research lab in advanced software technologies in 1993. The presentation will take place in the main building of the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) in Room H 2038, 2nd floor Strasse des 17. Juni 135 D-10623 Berlin-Charlottenburg Entrance is free, no reservation necessary, but PLEASE COME ON TIME, for we will have to leave the room at about 9:30pm! ABOUT RHAPSODY With the acquisition of NeXT Software Inc. one year ago, Apple opted for NeXT's product OPENSTEP for Mach (better known under its former name "NEXTSTEP") as the basis for its new operating system following MacOS. The "next generation OS", code-named "Rhapsody", offers multi-tasking, modern memory management and memory protection, Display PostScript, object-oriented development tools, complete Java integration and all the highlights known from MacOS like QuickTime Media Layer and ColorSync. HOW TO GET THERE We meet in Room H 2038 on the 2st floor of the main build of the Technical University of Berlin. It is located Strasse des 17. Juni 135 near the western city-center of Berlin. Follow the guides in the building. * by bike or public transport: We recommend coming by bicycle or using the public transport (BVG/S-Bahn): You can either take the underground line U2 or bus 145 or bus X9 and leave at 'Ernst-Reuter-Platz' (+ 200m walking), or you choose bus 245 up to Ernst-Reuter-Platz (+ 200m walking). The nearest rapid transit ("S-Bahn") station is "Tiergarten" (~800 m/ ~10 min walking distance); you get there via the rapid transit lines S3, S5, S7 or S75. * by car - from North (Wedding [No joke, it's the name of a district of Berlin! :-)], Moabit, Reinickendorf, Pankow ...) Main direction is Turmst. or Beusselst. and then "Alt-Moabit" St. Follow them south, crossing the Spree River via the Gotzkowsky Bridge until Ernst-Reuter-Platz. Drive around the roundabout traffic and leave the place to Strasse des 17. Juni. No. 135 is located on the right side. - all other directions: Head for Ernst-Reuter-Platz via Bismarckst. or Hardenbergst. (from the West-Berlin city center/Zoo) or "Strasse des 17. Juni"/Grosser Stern. From the roundabout Ernst-Reuter-Platz, take the "Strasse des 17. Juni". exit. After 200 m you see No. 135 at right side. There is a limited number of parking lots near the building. From: "Paul J. Sanchez" <paul@spectrum.SLU.EDU> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: Blue Sky Postcript AMS fonts for TeX Date: 10 Nov 1997 04:33:43 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <6462r7$5uu$1@news.digifix.com> 09-Nov-1997 Blue Sky Research has made their high quality postscript versions of the Computer Modern and AMS fonts for TeX freely available for general use (as described in the excerpt from their READ.ME file included below). I have packaged these as NeXT style .font directories and put them into .pkg files for easy installation. I have done so for the convenience of the NeXTstep/OpenStep community. No warranty is expressed or implied. The full distribution consists of three files. I anticipate they will wind up in: ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/fonts/tex/BlueSkyFonts.README ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/fonts/tex/BlueSkyCM.tar.gz ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/fonts/tex/BlueSkyAMS.tar.gz Both .tar.gz files will create their own subdirectory with an installer package, the original READ.ME file from the CTAN sources, and a file called README.NeXT containing installation instructions for NextStep/OpenStep. The CM directory also contains two test files which are further explained in the installation instructions. Many thanks to Blue Sky Research, Y&Y Inc., and the AMS for making these available. Enjoy! --Paul J. Sanchez Associate Professor Parks College of St. Louis University paul@spectrum.slu.edu Note1 - I am aware that the space character is not properly mapped for use in other NeXT applications, such as Edit.app. You're free to correct this on your copy if you wish, but I wanted to make sure that I wasn't violating the copyright with this distribution. Note2 - The original distribution of the CM fonts had a problem with lcircle10 - the name had been truncated to lcircle1 for DOS compatibility, and I didn't catch that until after the package was on the ftp site. The updated BlueSkyCM.tar.gz package fixes the problem. If you already installed the CM fonts, you fix this manually by renaming (in /LocalLibrary/Fonts): LCIRCLE1.font ==> LCIRCLE10.font LCIRCLE1.font/LCIRCLE1 ==> LCIRCLE10.font/LCIRCLE10 LCIRCLE1.font/LCIRCLE1.afm ==> LCIRCLE10.font/LCIRCLE10.afm Then edit /usr/lib/tex/ps/psfonts.cm and add 0's at the end of "lcircle1" and "LCIRCLE1" (which are both on the same line). =============== Excerpt from the READ.ME file =================== The PostScript Type 1 implementation of the Computer Modern fonts produced by and previously distributed by Blue Sky Research and Y&Y, Inc. are now freely available for general use. This has been accomplished through the cooperation of a consortium of scientific publishers with Blue Sky Research and Y&Y. Members of this consortium include: Elsevier Science IBM Corporation Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Springer-Verlag American Mathematical Society (AMS) In order to assure the authenticity of these fonts, copyright will be held by the American Mathematical Society. This is not meant to restrict in any way the legitimate use of the fonts, such as (but not limited to) electronic distribution of documents containing these fonts, inclusion of these fonts into other public domain or commercial font collections or computer applications, use of the outline data to create derivative fonts and/or faces, etc. However, the AMS does require that the AMS copyright notice be removed from any derivative versions of the fonts which have been altered in any way. In addition, to ensure the fidelity of TeX documents using Computer Modern fonts, Professor Donald Knuth, creator of the Computer Modern faces, has requested that any alterations which yield different font metrics be given a different name.

From: frank@ifi.unibas.ch Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: Samba 1.9.17p4 with NetInfo Date: 10 Nov 1997 21:25:56 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <647u54$9e$1@news.digifix.com> Hello everybody. As a site with a very heterogeneous computer environment, I ran into the problem of wanting to share our NEXTSTEP partitions with the NT machines we also have. Samba was first delivered with OS4, so I used that. Then came the service pack 3 on the NT machines and nothing worked anymore. The new version of Samba, however took care of that BUT: now I had to maintain a passwd file - ugh: nidump periodically, properly update the passwd file and .... Just a bit too much. I thought of modifying Samba such that it would read NetInfo rather than flat files ... and now I've done it. This version of Samba reads NetInfo for its configuration, printers, passwords, and lmhosts data (traversing the hierarchy as necessary). It will automatically revert to the flat files (except for the passwords) if NetInfo is not configured or valid file names are supplied. For the time beeing, you will have to make the entries in NetInfo manually (with NetInfoManager.app or the ni-utils). But stay tuned, the SambaManager.app is on its way ... I have also tried (but failed) to install a new character set (NeXT). It currently doesn't correctly map the characters yet, though. This still needs more work. This version has compiled fine under NEXTSTEP3.3 and OPENSTEP4.0. I have only tested the NS3.3 binaries (both under NS3.3 and OS4.0, NeXT and Intel) and they seem to work, although the log files do show a lot of error messages and I failed to automatically mount the user's home directories (perhaps a configuration problem). The modified sources are available from: ftp://ftp.ifi.unibas.ch/unix/next-3.3/samba-1.9.17p4.s.tar.gz You will need to grab the libdes sources if you must use the service pack 3 compatible security mode: ftp://ftp.ifi.unibas.ch/unix/general/libdes-4.00.tar.gz The precompiled binaries (they include libdes, beware of restrictions of use!): ftp://ftp.ifi.unibas.ch/unix/next-3.3/samba-1.9.17p4.NIHS.tar.gz ftp://ftp.ifi.unibas.ch/unix/openstep_mach/samba-1.9.17p4.NIS.tar.gz As this still needs more work, and I havn't sent the changes to the original authors, I will currently not put the sources onto any other server, but if you wish to do so, don't hesitate. -Robert -- Institut fuer Informatik tel +41 (0)61 321 99 67 Universitaet Basel fax. +41 (0)61 321 99 15 Robert Frank Mittlere Strasse 142 rfc822: frank@ifi.unibas.ch (NeXT,MIME mail ok) CH-4056 Basel X400: S=frank;OU=ifi;O=unibas;P=switch;A=arcom;C=ch Switzerland

Yes, the mythical commercial version has finally been let lose upon the Earth. It was released on Saturday, November 15, 1997. I apologize for the lateness of this release and for any interruption in service that you may have experienced when the previous version expired. Features added: o You can now pay for what you've been using, but you don't have to until February 1, 1998. Of course, the author would appreciate earlier payments if it's convenient for you. You may pay over the web (securely), by phone, fax, email, or postal mail. You may pay by credit card, U.S. check, EuroCheque, money order, or wire transfer. See the License help file page for details about how to pay. o The file format used to store your roles, goals, tasks, and appointments has been changed from a NeXT-specific binary one (typed streams) to a text format, ensuring portability to Rhapsody, Windows 95/NT, and Mac OS. Note however that, although the files can now be viewed in any text editor, they are not meant to be human readable or writable. Tweaking them will probably cause Chronographer to fail when trying to load them, so try to resist the temptation. The first time you start the new version of Chronographer, it will convert all of your files to the new format. Just to be safe, your old files will be renamed to "filename.old", if you should need to go back to them. If you wish to delete them later, feel free to. o As a side effect of the new file format, saving is now significantly faster. Unfortunately, loading is slower - for this release, at least. I'll see if I can optimize it. o Chronographer now has its own domain on the Internet. You can now find its web site at http://www.chronographer.com/. The mailing list has also moved to the new domain. Responses to requests to the list server will be much faster, since the list is now being hosted on a dedicated server connected to the net with dual T3 lines, instead of through a polled UUCP connection over a 14.4 Kbps modem without hardware error correction. Bugs fixed: o Nine mostly minor ones. See the release notes for details. These new features and fixed bugs are also described in Chronographer's release notes. Choose the Info-->Release Notes command to see them. AVAILABILITY ============ Chronographer is being distributed in one, quad-fat package: name: Chronographer.1.00.NIHS.b.tar.gz h/w: NeXT, Intel, HP-PA, SPARC size: 2755613 md5: 4f22325073defd1ff6a97f5ba4a44f6d sum32: 3508639707 You can download Chronographer from its new web page at http://www.chronographer.com/download.html. The page lists the sites where Chronographer is available. Just click on the site nearest you. The release is binary-only and includes software for NeXT, Intel, HP-PA, and SPARC hardware. It will run on NEXTSTEP versions 3.2 and later and on all versions of OPENSTEP for Mach. Please note the new address for this mailing list. Instead of chronographer-announce@alterlife.com, it is now announce-list@chronographer.com. Subscription and unsubscription requests should be sent to announce-list-request@chronographer.com. Include either "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" in the subject of the message. Of course, you can use the new version of Chronographer to handle the requests for you. Also, I will be changing my personal email address to everhart@chronographer.com soon, although the old one will continue to work until August 1998. I'd like to thank all of you for supporting Chronographer during these past 20 months of beta testing. Chronographer is a better program due to your comments and bug reports. With your continued support, it'll only get better. -- Dwight Everhart "We live in a society where the buck gets passed, Bella Vista, Arkansas and everyone's claiming to be a victim, and no everhart@alterlife.com one's responsible for their actions. Unfortunately, that can be the worst time for you to get access to your internet connection to send the announcements to comp.sys.next.announce. Thanks for using NeXTanswers! _________________________________________________________________ Written by: Eric P. In the qpopper directory I have included the libgdbm.a, which can be found in the qpopper.2.4.NIHS.bs/gnu directory. The GNU library is also compiled quad-fat (test/conversion programs included). To compile(if desired), install and configure qpopper read the files INSTALL and qpopper-NeXT.rtf in the qpopper.2.4.NIHS.bs directory. While qpopper is compiled quad-fat I have only tested it in my home machine next/motorola running NS3.3. I have no idea if it compiles/runs on OpenStep. Enjoy. Panagiotis Velissariou takis@superior.eng.ohio-state.edu takis@takis2.ee.net Here is the Qpopper README file Welcome to Qpopper, a POP3 server for most versions of UNIX ------------------------------------------------------------ What is Qpopper? ---------------- Qpopper supports the widely used POP3 protocol for downloading Internet e-mail used by many popular e-mail clients. Qopper does not include a message transfer agent or SMTP support and normally works with standard UNIX mail transfer agents such as sendmail or smail. Installing and documentation ---------------------------- The file INSTALL gives detailed install instructions. If you want to get started quickly, usually you can type "configure" to generate the Makefile for your platform, and then type "make". Detailed documentation is available the doc directory. In particular the file doc/Release.Notes describes the changes from one version to the next. Acknowledgments --------------- Qpopper is the work of many individuals and organization around the world. The original work was done at UC Berkeley and many have contributed since. QUALCOMM now maintains and distributes qpopper. While we don't have an accurate collection of the names of all, their contributions are appreciated. Finding out more about Qpopper ----------------------------- The latest release of qpopper is available at QUALCOMM's ftp site, ftp://ftp.qualcomm.com/quest/unix/servers You may also write to qpopper@qualcomm.com. We try to answer as much of the e-mail as possible, but apologize in advance if we are unable to answer your request. In general all messages are read and taken as suggestions for future work. Other QUALCOMM e-mail products ------------------------------ The Eudora Division of QUALCOMM has several e-mail products, some for free and others that are sold. These include the Eudora e-mail client for Windows and Macintosh, and the WorldMail server for Windows NT which implements the POP, IMAP, SMTP, LDAP and ph protocols. You can find out more about by writing e-mail to eudora-rep@eudora.com or at http://www.eudora.com.

TheShelf is a simple demo app which illustrates the ideas of the OS 4.0beta TabbedShelf and the Rhapsody UI study tray concept. It is not perfect...but gives a good impression of the concept. 7599 Nov 19 13:16 TheShelf.0.3.3a.README 180873 Nov 19 13:17 TheShelf.0.3.3a.rdr.P.bd.tgz The app requires the IconKit and MiscKit frameworks which are precompiled in: 602 Nov 19 15:38 MiscKit.2.0.5.rdr.P.b.README 614896 Nov 19 15:40 MiscKit.2.0.5.rdr.P.b.tgz 396 Nov 19 14:56 IconKit.4.2.1.rdr.P.b.README 64028 Nov 19 15:22 IconKit.4.2.1.rdr.P.b.tgz Besides that you can play with some simple 3D until QTML comes along. Osprey.app is a simple demo app that requires the MiscKit and the Mesa GL framework. A second demo app (MesaView) is part of the Mesa package. 2581 Nov 19 13:29 Osprey.0.05.README 249618 Nov 19 13:31 Osprey.0.05.rdr.P.b.tgz 1758 Nov 19 15:03 Mesa.2.0.rdr.P.b.README 307498 Nov 19 15:23 Mesa.2.0.rdr.P.b.tgz (! truncated on first upload please check size) All submissions are binary distributions only since the source code packages are 100% identical to the Openstep releases which already are on the archives. The final location of the files on the peak ftp server is not known yet but all files have been placed in pub/rhapsody/submissions Aloha Tomi P.S. Btw.. it is a pain that peak no longer allows looking into the submissions folders. It is virtually impossible to check if the files have been transfered correctly until someone downloads the corrupted files and complains about them :-( P.P.S: If you can't find the "good" files then you should be able to see them at: http://www9.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/~tsengel/Library/Rhapsody/

From: Pedja Bogdanovich <pedja@TipTop.COM> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: TipTop Software - Objective-Everything Release 5 Date: 24 Nov 1997 21:08:00 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <65cqbg$nnu$1@news.digifix.com> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Objective-Everything Release 5 ============================== Bethesda, Maryland. November 24, 1997. Today, TipTop Software, Inc. proudly announced Release 5 of the Objective-Everything(tm) development system for OpenStep (Rhapsody, Windows, and Mach), including Objective-Python, Objective-Tcl, Objective-Perl, and Objective-Browser. "We are excited to make the Objective-Everything technology widely available" said Pedja Bogdanovich, TipTop President. "Objective-Everything is the preeminent scripting solution for Yellow Box. It augments the Yellow Box development with the power and flexibility of the world's most popular high-level programming languages." Objective-Everything provides true language independence for the OpenStep (Yellow Box) object model. It allows you to develop programs for OpenStep without being restricted by the lack of expressiveness, class libraries, or other limitations of a particular programming language. With Objective-Everything you can use the language best suited for the task at hand, or even mix-and-match languages! Objective-Everything consists of Objective-Python, Objective-Tcl, Objective-Perl, and Objective-Browser. Objective-Everything is an invaluable development tool for anyone who develops under OpenStep, including programmers who just want to program in straight Objective-C. Objective-Everything is ideally suited for rapid application prototyping and development, application scripting, regression testing, exploratory programming, and much more. Specifically, some of the uses and benefits of Objective-Everything include: * Rapid application prototyping and development environment. The Objective-Everything languages, Objective-Python, Tcl, and Perl, provide an interactive interpretive environment. You get immediate feedback to all your programming actions in this environment, so you can prototype and develop much more rapidly. You can define and redefine classes and methods on-the-fly, at runtime. * Exploration and debugging. The dynamic nature of Objective-Everything, and its powerful runtime introspection capabilities make it an ideal tool for exploratory programming and debugging. * Scripting environment. The Objective-Everything runtime library can be linked with any OpenStep application to provide high-level scripting control. * Testing environment. Objective-Everything is ideally suited for regression testing. * True language independence. Classes can have mixed implementation; certain methods can be implemented in Objective-C, other methods can be implemented in Tcl, yet some other methods can be implemented in Python, etc. It is transparent and irrelevant to the sender of a message which language implements the corresponding method---the method looks "native" to the caller. * Augment OpenStep with high-level languages, augment high-level languages with the OpenStep API. Objective-Everything provides Python, Tcl, or Perl programmers with the full access to the powerful OpenStep API from these languages. Symmetrically, it augments the OpenStep environment with powerful high-level languages and associated class libraries. * Cross-platform portability. Programs developed with Objective-Everything, run without any porting and recompilation on all OpenStep platforms (Rhapsody, Windows, Mach). * Objective-Everything is easy! You will be able to use it to explore the OpenStep system and build non-trivial apps in no time. Objective-Browser is a graphical tool which allows you to visualize objects and object-relations in a running program. This is a *must-have* tool for all Apple Macintosh developers getting familiar with the OpenStep development environment! The browser allows you to view live objects within a running application in many object-specific ways. OB allows you to easily investigate the structure and methods of various objects and classes. For example, classes hierarchy, methods, instance variables, and other object information can be viewed and *edited* during execution. OB is extensible. You can provide object-specific browser nodes and custom inspectors for any object in the system. OB is dynamically loaded on demand and can be used from any application. From: info@caffeineSoft.com Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: Caffeine Software Announce Release of PixelNhance for OpenStep Date: 20 Nov 1997 20:35:01 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <6526tl$fmf$1@news.digifix.com> For Immediate Release For further information, please contact: Caffeine Software info@caffeineSoft.com Caffeine Software Announce Release of PixelNhance for OpenStep November 20, 1997 -- Naters, Switzerland -- Caffeine Software, publishers of TIFFany, the renown image editing package for NeXTSTEP and OpenStep, announce the availability of PixelNhance for OpenStep. PixelNhance is a simply to use image manipulation application which allows the user to adjust basic aspects of an image, such as contrast, color balance, and sharpness. All of the operations are performed in realtime and the user can see the original and processed image side by side. PixelNhance PR-1 is available for OpenStep/NT, the three OpenStep 4.2 architectures as well as a twin-fat binary for Apple's new operating system, code-named Rhapsody. This new twin-fat binary runs on Rhapsody Developer Release for Intel and PowerPC processors. In order to achieve simple usage, all of the settings are adjusted with live sliders or similar custom control elements. Because all of the operations are performed in realtime in fully screen-sized windows, the user can experiment with the settings and see the result immediately, thus allowing him/her to find the appropriate parameters without having any prior image processing knowledge. The application contains six modules, allowing to perform brightness, contrast, and midtone adjustment, correcting color balance, changing saturation, increasing sharpness, modifying color tones, and performing noise reduction. In addition to standalone usage, PixelNhance can be used as a realtime preview application for TIFFany3. Sometimes it may be desirable to apply an enhancement only to certain parts of the image. In such a case the user can adjust settings within PixelNhance to his / her liking and drag these parameters into TIFFany3, where it creates a TIFFany3 action, thus allowing the user to use the paint brush with the found settings, apply it to selected areas created with sophisticated marquee tools, or use it for automatic batch processing. PixelNhance PR-1 comes with a one-user full floating license which expires on January 15, 1998. In order to download the application, please visit Caffeine Software's web site at: hhtp://www.caffeineSoft.com/ PixelNhance is the result of combining the imaging power of TIFFany3 and many user's suggestions on how to make the user interface much simpler to allow the non-sophisticated user to enhance scanned or digitally acquired images. Since 1997, Caffeine Software specialize in cusom-made applications for specific imaging and batch processing needs for individual customers. Caffeine Software, PixelNhance and TIFFany are trademarks of Caffeine Software.
From: Tom Hageman <tom@basil.icce.rug.nl> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: Carl Edman's EnhanceMail 2.1 Date: 25 Nov 1997 21:46:46 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <65fh06$rsv$1@news.digifix.com> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- This is a feature/bugfix/maintenance/whatever release of Carl Edman's EnhanceMail bundle. EnhanceMail extends the capabilities of Mail 3.3 / 4.x by adding quoting, signatures, X face support, a distributed, cached user-image database, full-text indices PGP encryption/decryption/signatures and a number of other features. What's new: (*) German online help, contributed by David Andel <david@nexttoyou.de> (*) I am solely responsible for the mutilation, if any, of the Japanese Preferences panels in the base distribution. I don't have NS3.3J, nor do I know a single character of Japanese, so basically I was stumbling in the dark... (*) See the file "hidden-defaults.txt" for a list of `secret' Mail.app user preferences. (*) Pre-compiled bundle is now distributed in an Installer package. (*) EnhanceMail finally has its own logos :-) -- you'll encounter it in the online Help, the Info panel and the Installer package. New Info and Version History help sections. (*) Updated look-and-feel of the Preferences panels. Saving preferences should be a lot faster now. Lazy loading of XImageURL image into preferences panel (which should fix Tomi's "ImageServer not started" due to .jpeg/.gif images, problem.) Add UI for HTTPProxy, and for some future features. (*) Got rid of those pesky PGP alert panels on decryption / signature-check thanks to Gerben. PGP status is now shown in additional X-PGP-{Result,Notice,Warning} headers (even if the decryption / signature check fails.) (*) Workaround braindead exit status reported by pgp (2.6.3i at least) after successfully decoding encrypted, unsigned message (life is ridiculous.) (*) Signatures in Compose windows now switch style according to the format button even after a quote has been inserted. This should (finally) behave exactly as in EM1.3. (*) Smiley substitution now avoids uuencoded text regions. (*) Add periodic mail check in Mailboxes panel. (*) More Mailboxes panel efficiency improvements. (*) Add Smiley-inspector in Preferences. (*) Add unread mail count to Mailreader's status line. (*) Don't auto-compact indexed mailboxes (for now). (*) Add Control-deliver as a means to overrule auto-Spellcheck (this has the side-effect not to archive the message, whereas Alt-Deliver has the side-effect of forcing archival.) Remove the invokation of spell-check on Alt/Ctrl-Deliver if auto-Spellcheck is off. (*) Display silhouette image for failed XImageURL downloads. There's a KNOWN BUG [i.e. I just found out:-] in the installation over/deinstallation of a previously installed package (when _not_ installed as root): due to the readonly-ness of EnhanceMail.bundle/Images/ Installer fails with the alert "You don't have permission to install some of the files in EnhanceMail.pkg.pkg (see the Log view)." [sic] Workaround: either move the old EnhanceMail.bundle out of the way, or issue the command "chmod u+w /where/ever/EnhanceMail.bundle/Images" in a Terminal shell window. Or install as root. Source code and a quad-fat binary are included. See the accompanying README file for more information. It can be found at: <ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/mail/bundles/EnhanceMail.2.1.README> <ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/mail/bundles/EnhanceMail.2.1.NIHS.bs.tar.gz> - Base distribution with English online-help, localized UI for French, German and (partially) Japanese, Installer package with quad-fat precompiled bundle, and source code Additional language add-on packages are available at: <ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/mail/bundles/EnhanceMail_French.lproj.2.1.d.pkg.tar.gz> <ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/mail/bundles/EnhanceMail_German.lproj.2.1.d.pkg.tar.gz> - Installer packages with complete localized UI and online help. and also in <ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/new_arrivals/> for the near future. [I expect it will turn up at ftp://ftp.peanuts.org/ in a few days...] Please report any bugs or suggestions to: <enhancemail@basil.icce.rug.nl> (this is just an alias, _not_ a mailinglist.) Enjoy! From: Hermann Steier <hermann@aaa-plus.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: Free evaluation keys for Joy Date: 25 Nov 1997 22:12:43 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <65figr$sbk$1@news.digifix.com> Joy introductory offer expires this week Vienna, November 25, 1997. Till November 30, Joy, the must-have tool for Rhapsody developers, can be ordered at discounted introductory prices: $49 for Joy Explorer and $299 for Joy Developer. Free evaluation keys are available on request from joy@aaa-plus.com, implying no further obligations. These enable all features of Joy Developer, and can be used with the demo version, which came on the Rhapsody Developer CD. To download it or order Joy go to http://www.aaa-plus.com/joy/order The offer applies to all platforms: Joy for Rhapsody/PPC, Joy for Rhapsody/Intel, Joy for Windows NT/95, Joy for OPENSTEP/MachOS. Typical uses of Joy include: - interactive exploration of Rhapsody frameworks - prototyping solutions - rapid application development - automated testing and debugging of Rhapsody applications Joy Explorer includes a dynamic class browser, embeddable in any application. It allows you to browse the class tree, inspect objects, modify their instance variables and inspect, interactively invoke or override the methods they implement. This is the most enjoyable way to learn the concepts of Rhapsody programming and to master Rhapsody's extensive object frameworks. Joy is ideal for very quick, interactive development of sophisticated applications. It is tightly integrated with Rhapsody's Interface Builder application for graphical GUI construction and includes an object-oriented scripting language to implement the program logic. Testing of new code can be done interactively within IB without recompiling or even restarting the tested program. Joy boosts developer creativity and productivity by enabling programmers to quickly and interactively try out new ideas. Professional applications can thus be developed step by step, through rapid creation of prototypes. Programs developed with Joy run on Rhapsody, Windows 95/NT, and OPENSTEP/MachOS, with no porting and no recompiling required. Regular prices of $69 for Joy Explorer and $399 for Joy Developer will take effect in December.
