Mesa is the leading spreadsheet for NEXTSTEP, and is currently being ported to Apple's new Rhapsody operating system. Alpha versions have already been demonstrated running on Rhapsody, and will be on show at MacWorld Boston. A beta release will be available from shortly after the Rhapsody DR1 release date. "With Mesa we will be addressing one of the main concerns Mac-users will have in transitioning to the Rhapsody environment -- will they be able to access files created with their legacy applications, such as Excel," commented Matt Ware, Sales Manager of P & L, "However we believe that Mesa offers not only a migration path to the Yellow box, but also an enhanced user experience which will make them more productive." The first release of Mesa for Rhapsody will contain the following new features: * Improved Excel compatibility: import and export of Excel(TM) files up to version Excel95; * Workbooks; * A transparent UI for access to any data source supported by Apple's Enterprise Object Foundation (EOF): cell values can be retrieved from corporate databases. Mesa for NEXTSTEP is priced at $375. Academic and bulk discounts are available. All purchasers of Release 2.0 of Mesa will be entitled to a free upgrade to the Rhapsody release. For more information and screenshots, see P & L's WWW pages at http://www.plsys.co.uk/plsys/ P & L Systems is the leading supplier of products and services for NeXTSTEP in the UK. From: Tomas Hurka <tom@hukatronic.cz> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: New version of Multi!Wav Sound Driver Date: 31 Jul 1997 20:38:52 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <5rqt4s$h2e$1@news.digifix.com> Version 1.14 of Multi!Wav Adapter Device Driver for NEXTSTEP Release 3.2 and 3.3 for Intel Processors and OPENSTEP 4.0 /Mach The Harvard Computer Music Center, Rob Poor, and Tomas Hurka announce the first NeXTStep for Intel driver for a professional audio card. Thanks to the amazing work of Tomas Hurka, we have completed a driver for the AdB Digital Multiwav Pro and Multiwav Pro-18 cards. OVERVIEW: Multi!Wav Adapter device driver lets you take advantage of the following adapters: Manufacturer Adapter PC Bus AdB Corp. Multi!Wav Digital PRO ISA AdB Corp. Multi!Wav Digital PRO18 ISA These Multi!Wav ISA cards provide AES/EBU, SPDIF, and TOSLINK input/output to your NeXTStep Intel machine. The Pro-18 card adds an 18 bit digital to analog converter for monitoring. For more information about AdB sound cards see the AdB www home page at http://www.adbdigital.com. Driver supports 32000,44100 and 48000 Hz sampling rates, 16 bit linear sampling in mono or stereo format. The driver makes the card work like a standard audio card, so special software is not needed for digital tranfers, though I recommend Bernhard Scholz's excellent SASound.app for recording. The driver is robust, and provides much better playback that what you might be used to from the Microsoft Sound System, SoundBlaster, or Pro Audio Spectrum. Harvard Computer Music Center are currently using the cards to do direct to DAT transfers, and with Lexicon MXP1s for digital reverberation without leaving the digital realm. They're proven to be a remarkable improvement over our Microsoft Sound System Cards. COPYING: The Multi!Wav adapter device driver is shareware. You can freely distribute without changing or removing any parts of the package. If you found the driver reliable, please, register the driver. For more details see document Registration.rtf inside driver package. Changes between version 1.13 and 1.14: 1. Driver now correctly generate carrier for 48 KHz and 32 KHz sampling rates. Release 1.13 notes: 1. This a first public release of the driver. 2. Only Multi!Wav Digital PRO with XLINK XC4003A is supported. Other two versions (XC4004A and XC4003E) of XLINK can be supported on request. 3. Driver does not use IRQ since Multi!Wav card cannot generate one. The result is this log message when the driver is loaded by Mach OS: "MultiWav at dma channels 6 and 7 irq -268415659" This does no harm, just Sound class does not count with the sound driver without IRQ. AVAILABILITY: The driver has been uploaded to ftp.next.peak.org and placed in the /pub/next/submissions directory. Driver should be moved to the /pub/next/drivers/sound directory. The appropriate files are: ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/drivers/sound/MultiWav.1.14.I.b.README ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/drivers/sound/MultiWav.1.14.I.b.tar.gz For more information on the driver, please contact us at: Tomas Hurka Hukatronic (H.C.C.) OpenStep/NEXTSTEP/Rhapsody Related Usenet Newsgroups ==================================================== COMP.SYS.NEXT.ADVOCACY This is the "why NEXTSTEP is better (or worse) than anything else in the known universe" forum. It was created specifically to divert lengthy flame wars from .misc. COMP.SYS.NEXT.ANNOUNCE Announcements of general interest to the NeXT community (new products, FTP submissions, user group meetings, commercial announcements etc.) This is a moderated newsgroup, meaning that you can't post to it directly. Submissions should be e-mailed to next-announce@digifix.com where the moderator (Scott Anguish) will screen them for suitability. Messages posted to announce should NOT be posted or crossposted to any other comp.sys.next groups. COMP.SYS.NEXT.BUGS A place to report verifiable bugs in NeXT-supplied software. Material e-mailed to Bug_NeXT@NeXT.COM is not published, so this is a place for the net community find out about problems when they're discovered. This newsgroup has a very poor signal/noise ratio--all too often bozos post stuff here that really belongs someplace else. It rarely makes sense to crosspost between this and other c.s.n.* newsgroups, but individual reports may be germane to certain non-NeXT-specific groups as well. COMP.SYS.NEXT.HARDWARE Discussions about NeXT-label hardware and compatible peripherals, and non-NeXT-produced hardware (e.g. Intel) that is compatible with NEXTSTEP. In most cases, questions about Intel hardware are better asked in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware. Questions about SCSI devices belong in comp.periphs.scsi. This isn't the place to buy or sell used NeXTs--that's what .marketplace is for. COMP.SYS.NEXT.MARKETPLACE NeXT stuff for sale/wanted. Material posted here must not be crossposted to any other c.s.n.* newsgroup, but may be crossposted to misc.forsale.computers.workstation or appropriate regional newsgroups. COMP.SYS.NEXT.MISC For stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else. Anything you post here by definition doesn't belong anywhere else in c.s.n.*--i.e. no crossposting!!! COMP.SYS.NEXT.PROGRAMMER Questions and discussions of interest to NEXTSTEP programmers. This is primarily a forum for advanced technical material. Generic UNIX questions belong elsewhere (comp.unix.questions), although specific questions about NeXT's implementation or porting issues are appropriate here. Note that there are several other more "horizontal" newsgroups (comp.lang.objective-c, comp.lang.postscript, comp.os.mach, comp.protocols.tcp-ip, etc.) that may also be of interest. COMP.SYS.NEXT.SOFTWARE This is a place to talk about [third party] software products that run on NEXTSTEP systems. COMP.SYS.NEXT.SYSADMIN Stuff relating to NeXT system administration issues; in rare cases this will spill over into .programmer or .software. ** RELATED NEWSGROUPS ** COMP.SOFT-SYS.NEXTSTEP Like comp.sys.next.software and comp.sys.next.misc combined. Exists because NeXT is a software-only company now, and comp.soft-sys is for discussion of software systems with scope similar to NEXTSTEP. COMP.LANG.OBJECTIVE-C Technical talk about the Objective-C language. Implemetations discussed include NeXT, Gnu, Stepstone, etc. COMP.OBJECT Technical talk about OOP in general. Lots of C++ discussion, but NeXT and Objective-C get quite a bit of attention. At times gets almost philosophical about objects, but then again OOP allows one to be a programmer/philosopher. (The original comp.sys.next no longer exists--do not attempt to post to it.) Exception to the crossposting restrictions: announcements of usenet RFDs or CFVs, when made by the news.announce.newgroups moderator, may be simultaneously crossposted to all c.s.n.* newsgroups. This system allows you to request online technical documents, drivers, and other software, which are then sent to you automatically. You can request documents by fax or Internet electronic mail, read them on the world-wide web, transfer them by anonymous ftp, or download them from the BBS. NeXTanswers is an automated retrieval system. Requests sent to it are answered electronically, and are not read or handled by a human being. NeXTanswers does not answer your questions or forward your requests. USING NEXTANSWERS BY E-MAIL To use NeXTanswers by Internet e-mail, send requests to nextanswers@next.com. Files are sent as NeXTmail attachments by default; you can request they be sent as ASCII text files instead. To request a file, include that file's ID number in the Subject line or the body of the message. You can request several files in a single message. You can also include commands in the Subject line or the body of the message. These commands affect the way that files you request are sent: ASCII causes the requested files to be sent as ASCII text SPLIT splits large files into 95KB chunks, using the MIME Message/Partial specification REPLY-TO address sets the e-mail address NeXTanswers uses These commands return information about the NeXTanswers system: HELP returns this help file INDEX returns the list of all available files INDEX BY DATE returns the list of files, sorted newest to oldest SEARCH keywords lists all files that contain all the keywords you list (ignoring capitalization) For example, a message with the following Subject line requests three files: Subject: 2101 2234 1109 A message with this body requests the same three files be sent as ASCII text files: 2101 2234 1109 ascii This message requests two lists of files, one for each search: Subject: SEARCH Dell SCSI SEARCH NetInfo domain NeXTanswers will reply to the address in your From: line. To use a different address either set your Reply-To: line, or use the NeXTanswers command REPLY-TO If you have any problem with the system or suggestions for improvement, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY FAX To use NeXTanswers by fax, call (415) 780-3990 from a touch-tone phone and follow the instructions. You'll be asked for your fax number, a number to identify your fax (like your phone extension or office number), and the ID numbers of the files you want. You can also request a list of available files. When you finish entering the file numbers, end the call and the files will be faxed to you. If you have problems using this fax system, please call Technical Support at 1-800-848-6398. You cannot use the fax system outside the U.S & Canada. USING NEXTANSWERS VIA THE WORLD-WIDE WEB To use NeXTanswers via the Internet World-Wide Web connect to NeXT's web server at URL http://www.next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY ANONYMOUS FTP To use NeXTanswers by Internet anonymous FTP, connect to FTP.NEXT.COM and read the help file pub/NeXTanswers/README. If you have problems using this, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY MODEM To use NeXTanswers via modem call the NeXTanswers BBS at (415) 780-2965. Log in as the user "guest", and enter the Files section. From there you can download NeXTanswers documents. FOR MORE HELP... If you need technical support for NEXTSTEP beyond the information available from NeXTanswers, call the Support Hotline at 1-800-955-NeXT (outside the U.S. call +1-415-424-8500) to speak to a NEXTSTEP Technical Support Technician. If your site has a NeXT support contract, your site's support contact must make this call to the hotline. Otherwise, hotline support is on a pay-per-call basis. Postings that require editing because they do not contain information in a useable format, or have already been posted to other comp.sys.next.* groups may be delayed, or returned to you. If your posting is rejected, I'll try and make suggestions about what should be changed where possible. Obviously off charter messages (spams, open-letters, etc) may not get a response. If you are announcing software available by FTP, make sure the copy on the archive site is good. Announcement of Product Sales ============================= This is an area of announcement that has caused me terrible grief in the past. The policy is tilted towards the ISV, which has worked out well in the past. Posts that announce sales of products that you are DIRECTLY involved in the development of are OK. Posts from companies trying to sell other products are evaluated on an individual basis. Time Sensitive Announcements ============================ Many times an announcement should coincide with a specific date. Unfortunately, that can be the worst time for you to get access to your internet connection to send the announcements to comp.sys.next.announce. In order to make comp.sys.next.announce as timely as possible, I will accept "post-dated" announcements for release on a specific future date. All information will be kept confidential until the requested release date, and NDAs will be signed where required to ensure this. From: ergo@merlin.stuttgart.netsurf.de (Olaf Foellinger) Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce,rec.games.go Subject: Submission: NeXTGo 2.7 Date: 5 Aug 1997 20:17:50 GMT Organization: none Message-ID: <5s81pe$jg1$1@news.digifix.com> This is a new version (2.7) of the NeXTGo program written by Man L. Li, Wayne Iba, Bob Webber and John Neil (see the original READMEs for details). Further there is some gnu-code inside so the GPL applies. NeXTGo is a free graphical client for the internet go servers. It's for people (like me) who like to play go on the internet (a rare but growing spezies) and wants to use NeXTStep or OpenStep for this purpose (a very rare species I presume). I've uploaded this version for several reasons. Of course there are some new features the most essential of is the client-side time control which is very useful in case of netlag. Further you can begin to type in messages in any window (see what happens) and do not have to activate the one that can receive keyboard input. The GUI changed again a little bit and there might be some new features I forgot til now. Another reason is that i will change to OS 4.2 in the near future so this may be the last version of NeXTGo from me. I'm not sure how complicated it is to port it and if I will have time to try it. The source is included so feel free to try it yourself ;-) . You can find NeXTGo at ftp://peanuts.leo.org/pub/next/Games/network/NeXTGo.2.7.NIHS.bs.gnutar.gz ftp://igs.nuri.net/Go/clients/NeXTGo.2.7.NIHS.bs.gnutar.gz The package has been compiled quad-fat and contains the source too. It works on NexTStep 3.3 PL1 on Intel-processors and may work on 3.2, other architectures as well (sorry, have no possibility to test) and on OpenStep 4.x. Anderson Voice: 215 653 0911 Greg_Anderson@afs.com For Immediate Release ANDERSON FINANCIAL SYSTEMS UNVEILS RHAPSODY APPS MacWorld/Boston intro for PowerPC versions of PasteUp(tm) and WriteUp(tm) Anderson Financial Systems Inc. today announced that it has ported its PasteUp(tm) page layout and WriteUp(tm) word processing applications to an early-access version of Apple Computer Inc.'s PowerPC-based Rhapsody operating system. The popular applications, available for many years on NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP, will be demonstrated at MacWorld/Boston on August 6 and 7, in the Rhapsody pavilion of Apple's Hall A, Bayside Expo Center. "AFS is excited to be among the leaders in adopting Rhapsody as a superb application deployment platform," said Gregory H. Anderson, Founder and CEO. "We know it is possible to go beyond the currently accepted state of the art in productivity application, and the Rhapsody releases of our products will prove that ease of use and sophistication need not be mutually exclusive software goals." One such easy-yet-sophisticated feature in WriteUp is the ability to open any kind of document without worrying about which other word processor originally created it. Filtering from a wide variety of formats is completely automatic, and a preferred save format can be set for foolproof compatibility in heterogeneous environments. Another innovation, scheduled for the Rhapsody Premier Release in January 1998, will be a mechanism to tailor the visible feature set for each user's needs. For example, someone who never requires mail merge operations will be able to simplify the user interface - and reduce runtime memory usage - in their copy of WriteUp by requesting that this feature not be loaded. In this way, the needs of diverse users will be met without creating "bloatware." Further information and complete feature sets can be found in the Third Party Software section of www.stepwise.com, or by emailing <WriteUp@afs.com> and <PasteUp@afs.com>. Demonstration copies of shipping NEXTSTEP releases and OPENSTEP 4.2 beta releases are located at <ftp://ftp.next.peak.org>. ABOUT ANDERSON FINANCIAL SYSTEMS Anderson Financial Systems Inc. is a privately held software development company based in Springhouse, Pennsylvania (suburban Philadelphia). Founded in 1982, the company's primary business has been designing customized trading software for more than 60 Wall Street firms on MSDOS and NEXTSTEP platforms. Representative clients include First National Bank of Chicago, PaineWebber, Dean Witter, Soros Fund Management, Delaware Management Company, Oppenheimer Management Corp. and Texas Commerce Bank. Since adding NeXT to its roster in 1991, AFS has made a substantial commitment to building applications that leverage the unique capabilities of NEXTSTEP, OPENSTEP, and Apple's upcoming Rhapsody operating system. ###

Most go out in less than 24 hours. Postings that require editing because they do not contain information in a useable format, or have already been posted to other comp.sys.next.* groups may be delayed, or returned to you. Hopefully this will make these announcements arrive at users sites as quickly as if you posted them directly to comp.sys.next.whatever. Submissions can be sent to next-announce@digifix.com. From: Dwight Everhart <everhart@alterlife.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: Chronographer 0.96 -- A daily planner application Date: 15 Aug 1997 05:16:26 GMT Organization: Sailor Hardware Message-ID: <5t0ona$ac3$1@news.digifix.com> Chronographer -- A daily planner application Dwight Everhart everhart@alterlife.com August 15, 1997 UPDATE ====== Chronographer version 0.96 has been released. Several major features have been added since the last publicly-announced version, including: o Multiple schedule views: In addition to the day view, Chronographer now also features week, month, and year views. You can select a different view by clicking on the tab for the view. The tabs are located above the schedule view. The week view displays an entire seven days side by side. The top portion of the view displays the to-do list for each day, and the bottom portion displays the schedule for each day. The month view is similar to paper calendars. It displays a box for each day with the to-do items and appointments for the day listed in the box. The view also provides a filter panel that allows you to select which types of appointments or to-do items are displayed. The year view displays an entire year but without appointments or to-do items, since there isn't enough room to display them. Changing schedule dates is very easy. There are seven buttons at the top of the schedule window which display dates near the schedule's date. The day view displays the other days in the week; the week view displays the dates for the previous and next three weeks; the month view displays the previous and next three months; and the year view displays the previous and next three years. Each view has its own to-do list associated with it. The day view's list is for items that need to be done that day. The week view's list is for items that need to be done sometime that week but aren't tied down to a particular day. The month and year views' lists work the same way. o A button has been added to the bottom of the schedule window labeled "Jump To...". Clicking on it opens a panel which allows you to select an arbitrary date to change the schedule to. The panel also includes a control for calculating a new date by adding or subtracting a given number of days, weeks, months, or years. o The fonts used for the week view, day view, to-do list, and task list can now be changed using the Font panel. o When an appointment is dragged over a day or week schedule, the time of the schedule which the appointment is over is displayed in a box to the right of the appointment. o Many optimizations have been made to the way schedules are loaded and displayed. You should notice a significant increase in speed and responsiveness. o Cutting and pasting tasks has been optimized. Previously, if you copied or cut a task, all appointments would be loaded to ensure that all of the task's appointments were copied or cut with it. Now no extra appointments are loaded, even though all of the task's appointments are still moved with the task as before. DESCRIPTION =========== Chronographer is an application designed to help you to organize not only your time but also your priorities in life. Instead of just keeping track of appointments, Chronographer also keeps track of the goals that these appointments further, so you can easily determine if what you are doing today is helping you to accomplish what you want to do this week, this month, this year, and this decade. Instead of just asking yourself, "What needs to be done and when do I need to do it?", Chronographer encourages you to first ask, "What do I want to accomplish in life?" and then ask, "What do I need to do in order to achieve these goals?" Chronographer focuses on the long term as well as the short term. FEATURES ======== o A browser to organize your activities by grouping them into roles and goals. o Schedules for keeping track of appointments. Day, week, month, and year schedule views are available. In the day and week schedules, appointments are displayed in colored boxes. Schedule detail can be set to one line for every 60, 30, 15, or 5 minutes. In the month view, a filter can be used to intelligently control which appointments and to-do items are displayed. o To-do lists for keeping track of appointments that don't have specific times associated with them. Each day, week, month, and year has its own to-do list. To-do items can be filtered so that only certain groups of them are displayed. o A button bar for selecting nearby dates, making navigation easy and fast. o Repeating appointments. They can repeat every day, week, month, or year or a multiple of those periods. o Appointment reminders using either a panel, email, or sound. o A time report that lists, in detail, how you spent your time. This could be a useful tool for consultants who need to keep track of how much time they spend on each of their projects. It could also be useful for employees who have to report their time usage to their managers. o Easy drag-and-drop interface. Once you type in an appointment's title, you never have to type it in again. Just drag the appointment to a schedule or to-do list to schedule it. Appointment durations can be changed by dragging the edges of the appointment. Appointments can be moved easily by dragging them to another location on the schedule or to another day's schedule or to a to-do list. From: "Stephen J. Perkins" <perkins@netmass.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: REQUEST: PPP FTP and HTTP mirror request Date: 16 Aug 1997 03:35:23 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <5t375r$a09$1@news.digifix.com> This is a request for mirror sites for PPP-2.3. The current site, hosted by the Thoughtport Authority, has been superb in all aspects. While I hope that we can maintain our presence at this site, I have been notified that the PPP project should find some mirror sites for its work. To this end I am looking for sites that would like to host anonymous FTP, HTTP, and/or the PPP mailing list. My preference is that sites be willing to host both FTP and HTTP. I will only need one site to host a mailing list. It would be nice to have several sites outside the US. There are several requirements that should be stated upfront. The WWW pages require the use of PERL and several CGI scripts. They also have a server statistic function that requires an entry to crontab. In exchange for the service, I hope to have a mechanism that allows each site to customize a graphic banner that is visible on the top PPP page. This banner could point to the services your institution provides. To aid in mirror setup, I have put together an NeXT pkg that contains version 2.8 of mirror.pl. Installation of the mirror software should consist of installing the package via Installer.app, adding one line to your crontab entry, and dropping a configuration file into a special directory (after you change an email address and path specification for where mirrored files should reside). I will supply the configuration file template preconfigured for PPP. I would sincerely appreciate any support your site may be willing to provide. If you are interested in hosting, please contact me via email. Regards, Steve

Hopefully this will make these announcements arrive at users sites as quickly as if you posted them directly to comp.sys.next.whatever. Submissions can be sent to next-announce@digifix.com. OpenStep/NEXTSTEP/Rhapsody Related Usenet Newsgroups ==================================================== COMP.SYS.NEXT.ADVOCACY This is the "why NEXTSTEP is better (or worse) than anything else in the known universe" forum. (The original comp.sys.next no longer exists--do not attempt to post to it.) From: Dwight Everhart <everhart@alterlife.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: Chronographer 0.96 -- A daily planner application Date: 17 Aug 1997 05:15:51 GMT Organization: Sailor Hardware Message-ID: <5t61e7$buk$1@news.digifix.com> Chronographer -- A daily planner application Dwight Everhart everhart@alterlife.com August 15, 1997 UPDATE ====== Chronographer version 0.96 has been released. AVAILABILITY ============ Chronographer is being distributed in one, quad-fat package: name: Chronographer.0.96.NIHS.b.tar.gz h/w: NeXT, Intel, HP-PA, SPARC size: 2545655 md5: 25c1cc8c56bae0591997eb1cb5c9f191 sum32: 4180230182 Chronographer is available on PEAK: ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/demos/productivity/Chronographer.0.96.NIHS.b.tar.gz Chronographer is also available on Peanuts: ftp://peanuts.leo.org/pub/comp/platforms/next/Tools/calendars/Chronographer.0.96.NIHS.b.tar.gz The release is binary-only and includes software for NeXT, Intel, HP-PA, and SPARC hardware. From: Thomas Engel <tsengel@slivovic.nl.ctp.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: IconKit 4.2.1...with fixed bugs and working FileViewer for OpenStep Date: 18 Aug 1997 03:08:56 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <5t8ec8$9ed$1@news.digifix.com> This is a quick port of IconKit 1.2 to OPENSTEP 4.2 MachOS. Release notes v 4.2.1: I still don't know what H Scott Ray thinks about this port since the original license was not explicitly giving away the source.but since Peter already did most of the boring conversion work...and having a read FileBrowser on Openstep/NT is something I couldn't resist to So I wasted one evening cleaning up and fixing some of the problems to make it behave a little better. 1) Everything at least compiles an Mach and NT 2) Fixed the retain/release problems where I stubled accross them 3) The IKShelf should now work properly 4) The IKIconPath is still not working correctly 5) FileViewer at least now works 90% the way it should. Under NT the shelf does not properly update the colors and we somehow don't get all the icons from the NSWorkspace class...but it works ! The IconKit was using its own GC mechanism and notification system which was good in the 3.x days. However parts of that caused problems under Openstep or at least make the code more complex then necessary. This will either need a major rewrite in a lot of places or we will propably see most of the ideas appear inside the MiscKit 2.x which already support some of the IconKit protocols and ideas. However...enjoy this cool kit. Thanx to Scott for writing it....and Peter for doing the dirty work of converting it. Aloha Tomi Engel (tsengel@cip.informatik.uni-erlangen.de) The package has been uploaded to all three major ftp sites. It might take some time until the submissions: IconKit.4.2.1.sd.README IconKit.4.2.1.sd.tar.gz ...migrate to their final locations. These propably will be: ftp://peanuts.leo.org/next/OpenStep/developer/resources/ ftp://ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de/pub/NeXT/developer/lib/kits/ ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/openstep/multi-platforms/sourcelibrary/ (kits/ ??) Installation instructions: 1) open the PB.project in ./IconKit.4.2.1/Framework 2) make install (the Framework installs to /LocalLibrary/Frameworks 3) open the PB.project in ./IconKit.4.2.1/FileViewer 4) make 5) run, the FileViewer should come up 6) open the PB.project in ./IconKit.4.2./Palette 7) make palette 8) open the Palette in IB... I've tested only a little piece of the entire source. The FileViewer app is runnig, and that's it. Please do not ask for support or any further enhancements. From: sanguish@digifix.com Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: BellSouth Web Enhancements Signal A New Way of Doing Business With Interactive Customer Service Applications Date: 20 Aug 1997 20:08:38 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <5tfis6$815$1@news.digifix.com> BellSouth Web Enhancements Signal A New Way of Doing Business With Interactive Customer Service Applications For Immediate Release: August 18, 1997 ATLANTA ' BellSouth today announced significant expansions to its Internet-based interactive customer service that allow customers to do much more of their business with BellSouth via the Web and put the communications company farther ahead of potential competitors. Part of a strategic move by BellSouth to provide a common look, feel and navigation for all BellSouth Web sites, the interactive customer service applications, found at http://www.bellsouth.com, are available now. The applications, which put BellSouth on the leading edge of interactive online customer support, are useful to both residential and business customers and potential customers. "This is an excellent example of a telco creatively reinventing itself around its customers' requirements," said Traver Kennedy, worldwide director of telecommunications research at Aberdeen Group, a Boston-based industry analyst firm. "By providing this feature-rich Internet solution, BellSouth is delivering improved customer service directly in to the hands of its customers - choice, convenience and control - as it delivers on its corporate strategy and leadership vision." Charlie Coe, group president - Customer Operations for BellSouth said that BellSouth has a rich heritage of providing world-class customer service. "We are simply extending that approach to our Web presence," said Coe. We are providing an interactive way for our customers to do business with us when and where it's convenient for them." Among the new expansions to BellSouth's interactive customer service applications are: Product Catalog. Both business and residential customers can use BellSouth's Web site to obtain a complete catalog of products and services. In addition to detailed product descriptions, the catalog includes instructions for use and location-specific product and pricing information. Bill Review. Business and residential customers can view an exact graphical representation of their BellSouth bill online. Customers may review both current and previous bills. They will also discover useful links to detailed product descriptions, explanations of charges, suggested payment alternatives and answers to their most common billing questions. Solution Advisor. Available initially for small business customers, the Solution Advisor builds on BellSouth's extensive knowledge and experience as a small business consultant. A small business customer can obtain instant recommendations for telecommunications solutions customized for his or her business. Using customer responses to an interactive questionnaire about specific business requirements, BellSouth's online small business specialist recommends specific products for the business. With pricing tailored for each business locale, the recommendations provide both an optimum solution and an alternative. "Most small business operators do not have a lot of telecommunications expertise or support," said Mark Silliman, of Jacksonville, Fla., CFO of The Paragon Group, Inc., a small business that provides customized apparel and other incentive marketing items to customers. "People like me are not able to drive a tractor-trailer rig down the 'Information Superhighway.' We need highly customized solutions parked right on our desks." BellSouth developers addressed significant technological challenges in building the interactive customer service applications. They have received high marks from vendors like Hewlett-Packard, Apple Computer, Oracle and Netscape for rapid deployment of a secure, user-friendly environment that takes advantage of extensive information resources across the enterprise. "BellSouth has done leading-edge engineering with open systems technologies like CORBA, Java, UNIX, and WebObjects to integrate legacy applications and data sources with new valued-added development," said David Kay, Senior Product Line Manager for WebObjects at Apple Computer, Inc. "The result is an extensible, maintainable, open architecture that creates value for their customers. Great customer service comes from delivering the right corporate information to customers in a convenient, easy way. This is exactly what BellSouth has done." BellSouth.net Inc., the company's Internet and electronic commerce subsidiary, developed these breakthrough practical business applications. These capabilities demonstrate BellSouth's effectiveness at using the same high-quality, reliable Internet technology it markets to customers. Dennis Yablonsky, president and CEO of Pittsburgh, Pa.-based Carnegie Group, echoed that view. "Solution Advisor represents the first time a company has used a Web site to advise and make customized recommendations to customers," said Yablonsky, whose company provided knowledge engineering and software development expertise for Solution Advisor. "While other companies spew 'cookie cutter' recommendations via their Web sites, BellSouth's Solution Advisor makes highly customized, individualized recommendations that best meet customers' specific needs. It's just as if customers were speaking with a BellSouth Small Business Specialist on the phone." BellSouth's Coe said that the announcement of the interactive applications is the most recent action in BellSouth's strategy to enhance its relationship with customers by using the Internet. Prior to the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, BellSouth provided a means for customers to place orders for ISDN service online. Last month BellSouth added College Connection, a Web-based application to assist college students living away from home to select and order telephone service via the Web. Upcoming enhancements include extending Solution Advisor-type applications to residential customers, online bill payment and additional online ordering capabilities. BellSouth made its decision to build the new applications and future enhancements based on direct feedback from customers. In a survey of customers who use the Internet, 79 percent of those who responded said they wanted product pricing and availability information on the BellSouth Web site; 75 percent said they wanted the ability to review their monthly bills; 72 percent said they wanted to order products over the Web, and 50 percent said they wanted Solution Advisor-type products. "Our customers have told us that they want to do business on the Web in a big, big way," said Stan Yeatts, director of BellSouth's online presence. "The personal computer is becoming the information appliance of choice for a growing number of consumers and businesses." BellSouth is a $19 billion communications services company. It provides telecommunications, wireless communications, directory advertising and publishing, Internet and information services to more than 28 million customers in 20 countries worldwide. BellSouth's telecommunications operations provide service over one of the most modern telecommunications networks in the world for nearly 23 million telephone lines in a nine-state region that includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

From: Karl Kraft <karl@relada.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: ANNOUNCEMENT: Next/Rhapsody job mailing list Date: 24 Aug 1997 03:39:47 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <5toae3$ku3$1@news.digifix.com> Short Version ------------- A new mailing list for next/rhapsody job opportunities. To subscribe, send email to majordomo@ensuing.com In the body of the message type one of the magic incantations: subscribe nextjobs -or- subscribe nextjobs-digest Long Version ------------ NEXTJOBS is a mailing list that I started in 1995 to help NeXTSTEP programers find companies looking to hire them. At the time I was getting a full news feed via satellite. It ran for about a year before a hard drive crash, followed by a problem with the company feeding the news via satellite and, as a result, it got put on the back burner. Now that Rhapsody has been announced and I have a new dedicated news feed, I've decided to bring it back from the dead. NEXTJOBS is primarily driven by a news scanner that looks in the misc.jobs.* newsgroups for certain keywords like NeXTSTEP, Rhapsody, Objective-C, et cetera. Generally it's pretty good and finding interesting posts. It then forwards these posts via email to all the subscribers of nextjobs. This generates 95% of the traffic to the list. The other 5% is my weekly posting about how to be removed from the list. Occasional repeats happen, as well as multiple job posts from headhunters where only one job is anything interesting. NEXTJOBS is now new and improved with better flavor. Subscriptions take place automatically using majordomo, and there is a digest and non-digest version. There is also support for people to post to the list, although it is not intended as a general discussion list. For more info check out http://www.ensuing.com/nextjobs/index.html

The site provides an informal collection of pointers, references, and starting points for developers who are using the Prelude to Rhapsody bundle, distributed at this year's Worldwide Developer Conference. OpenStep/NEXTSTEP/Rhapsody Related Usenet Newsgroups ==================================================== COMP.SYS.NEXT.ADVOCACY This is the "why NEXTSTEP is better (or worse) than anything else in the known universe" forum. Getting the Newsgroups without getting News =========================================== Thanks to Michael Ross at antigone.com, the main NEXTSTEP groups are now available as a mailing list digest as well. next-nextstep next-advocacy next-announce next-bugs next-hardware next-marketplace next-misc next-programmer next-software next-sysadmin object lang-objective-c (For a full description, send mail to listserv@antigone.com). Most go out in less than 24 hours. Postings that require editing because they do not contain information in a useable format, or have already been posted to other comp.sys.next.* groups may be delayed, or returned to you. If your posting is rejected, I'll try and make suggestions about what should be changed where possible. Obviously off charter messages (spams, open-letters, etc) may not get a response. Hopefully this will make these announcements arrive at users sites as quickly as if you posted them directly to comp.sys.next.whatever. Submissions can be sent to next-announce@digifix.com. It retrieves mail from remote mail servers and forwards it to your local (client) machine's delivery system, so it can then be read by normal mail user agents such as elm(1) or Mail(1). You can find the documentation and examples under doc/fetchmail/. fetchmail supports standard all mail-retrieval protocols in use on the Internet: POP2, POP3 (including POP3 with RFC1938 one-time passwords), RPOP, APOP, KPOP, all flavors of IMAP (including IMAP4rev1 with RFC1731 Kerberos v4 authentication), and ESMTP ETRN. This is the replacement for the old popclient program. From: "B.G. Mahesh" <mahesh@paragon-software.com> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: Paragon Software Announces Release 5.0 of the Oak CORBA Suite for Developing Distributed Applications using CORBA Technology Date: 26 Aug 1997 20:58:03 GMT Organization: Paragon Software, Inc. Message-ID: <5tvg0r$e0t$1@news.digifix.com> PARAGON SOFTWARE ANNOUNCES RELEASE 5.0 OF THE OAK CORBA SUITE FOR DEVELOPING DISTRIBUTED APPLICATIONS USING CORBA TECHNOLOGY A proven CORBA 2.0 IIOP-compatible ORB especially suited to the NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP marketplace VIENNA, VA -- August 18, 1997-- Paragon Software, Inc., a leading provider of custom enterprise application solutions, announces Release 5.0 of its OAK CORBA suite. OAK supports deployment of CORBA-based solutions on a wide variety of UNIX and Windows platforms. The 5.0 release includes full IIOP support and is 100% compatible with other CORBA 2.0 ORB products, including Orbix and VisiBroker. Available platforms include HP-UX, Solaris, Linux, Windows NT, Windows 95, any POSIX-compliant UNIX system, NEXTSTEP 3.X, and OPENSTEP 4.X. OAK 5.0 and the CORBA 2.0 Specification --------------------------------------- OAK is Paragon Software's implementation of the OMG CORBA 2.0 core architecture, as defined in the CORBA 2.0 specification. Release 5.0 implements four main components of the CORBA specification: the Object Request Broker, IIOP interoperability, name services, and OMG IDL language mappings with C++ and Objective-C bindings. Additional components of the CORBA specification are currently being developed, including an Interface Repository and CosEvents. Especially Suited to the NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP Marketplace ---------------------------------------------------------- Developers using Apple's advanced Objective-C development environment can now take advantage of the latest CORBA distributed application technology while developing their applications using familiar Apple tools. A proven tool in its fifth release, the OAK CORBA suite is the only CORBA implementation in the world to support Objective-C language bindings, finally bringing the standards and advanced architecture of CORBA to the OPENSTEP development environment. In addition, IIOP support allows new and existing NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP applications to interoperate in an open, standards-based distributed environment. ``The power and reach of CORBA continues to grow in the technology marketplace, and it will be very important for Apple customers to be positioned to take advantage of this,'' said Jeff Marshall, President of Paragon Software. ``We are very excited to bring CORBA solutions to customers developing OPENSTEP applications. With the combination of Apple Enterprise development tools and the portability and standards support of CORBA, customers can deploy applications using NEXTSTEP or OPENSTEP while ensuring they will interoperate in the emerging distributed environment.'' Give New Life to Legacy NEXTSTEP Applications ---------------------------------------------- With its Objective-C binding support, OAK is the best choice for distributing new and legacy NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP applications with CORBA. OAK isideal for the conversion of existing NEXTSTEP applications using low-risk strategies for interoperability. Developers working with OAK can quickly create a NEXTSTEP CORBA implementation server using business logic from a legacy "fat" client application. A new "thin" CORBA client may then be written with OPENSTEP by leveraging the existing user interface, rewritten in C++ in any of the supported environments, or constructed from Java components for deployment in an IIOP-enabled web browser like Netscape Communicator. OAK allows developers to expand to new platforms, migrate selected components to a more open environment, or leverage an investment in NEXTSTEP technology by moving key processing components to other platforms. New initiatives by Sun Microsystems, Netscape Communications, and other key industry trendsetters ensure that a CORBA-enabled application will provide unparalleled opportunities for integration and interoperability. Availability ------------ OAK Release 5.0 suite is currently shipping. Fully functional evaluation copies of OAK 5.0 are freely available from Paragon's web site. Pricing varies based on quantity and deployment platform. Service contracts and source code licensing are also available.
