WWW site ============================ http://www.next.com comp.sys.next.* newsgroups ========================== news:comp.sys.next.advocacy This is the "why NEXTSTEP is better (or worse) than anything else in the known universe" forum. It was created specifically to divert lengthy flame wars from .misc. news:comp.sys.next.announce Announcements of general interest to the NeXT community (new products, FTP submissions, user group meetings, commercial announcements etc.) This is a moderated newsgroup, meaning that you can't post to it directly. Submissions should be e-mailed to next-announce@digifix.com where the moderator (Scott Anguish) will screen them for suitability. Messages posted to announce should NOT be posted or crossposted to any other comp.sys.next groups. news:comp.sys.next.bugs A place to report verifiable bugs in NeXT-supplied software. Material e-mailed to Bug_NeXT@NeXT.COM is not published, so this is a place for the net community find out about problems when they're discovered. This newsgroup has a very poor signal/noise ratio--all too often bozos post stuff here that really belongs someplace else. It rarely makes sense to crosspost between this and other c.s.n.* newsgroups, but individual reports may be germane to certain non-NeXT- specific groups as well. news:comp.sys.next.hardware Discussions about NeXT-label hardware and compatible peripherals, and non-NeXT-produced hardware (e.g. Intel) that is compatible with NEXTSTEP. In most cases, questions about Intel hardware are better asked in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware. Questions about SCSI devices belong in comp.periphs.scsi. This isn't the place to buy or sell used NeXTs--that's what .marketplace is for. news:comp.sys.next.marketplace NeXT stuff for sale/wanted. Material posted here must not be crossposted to any other c.s.n.* newsgroup, but may be crossposted to misc.forsale.computers.workstation or appropriate regional newsgroups. news:comp.sys.next.misc For stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else. Anything you post here by definition doesn't belong anywhere else in c.s.n.*--i.e. no crossposting!!! news:comp.sys.next.programmer Questions and discussions of interest to NEXTSTEP programmers. This is primarily a forum for advanced technical material. Generic UNIX questions belong elsewhere (comp.unix.questions), although specific questions about NeXT's implementation or porting issues are appropriate here. Note that there are several other more "horizontal" newsgroups (comp.lang.objective-c, comp.lang.postscript, comp.os.mach, comp.protocols.tcp-ip, etc.) that may also be of interest. news:comp.sys.next.software This is a place to talk about [third party] software products that run on NEXTSTEP systems. news:comp.sys.next.sysadmin Stuff relating to NeXT system administration issues; in rare cases this will spill over into .programmer or .software. Related Newsgroups ================== news:comp.soft-sys.nextstep Like comp.sys.next.software and comp.sys.next.misc combined. Exists because NeXT is a software-only company now, and comp.soft-sys is for discussion of software systems with scope similar to NEXTSTEP. news:comp.lang.objective-c Technical talk about the Objective-C language. Implemetations discussed include NeXT, Gnu, Stepstone, etc. news:comp.object Technical talk about OOP in general. Lots of C++ discussion, but NeXT and Objective-C get quite a bit of attention. At times gets almost philosophical about objects, but then again OOP allows one to be a programmer/philosopher. (The original comp.sys.next no longer exists--do not attempt to post to it.) Exception to the crossposting restrictions: announcements of usenet RFDs or CFVs, when made by the news.announce.newgroups moderator, may be simultaneously crossposted to all c.s.n.* newsgroups. This system allows you to request online technical documents, drivers, and other software, which are then sent to you automatically. You can request documents by fax or Internet electronic mail, read them on the world-wide web, transfer them by anonymous ftp, or download them from the BBS. NeXTanswers is an automated retrieval system. Requests sent to it are answered electronically, and are not read or handled by a human being. NeXTanswers does not answer your questions or forward your requests. USING NEXTANSWERS BY E-MAIL To use NeXTanswers by Internet e-mail, send requests to nextanswers@next.com. Files are sent as NeXTmail attachments by default; you can request they be sent as ASCII text files instead. To request a file, include that file's ID number in the Subject line or the body of the message. You can request several files in a single message. You can also include commands in the Subject line or the body of the message. These commands affect the way that files you request are sent: ASCII causes the requested files to be sent as ASCII text SPLIT splits large files into 95KB chunks, using the MIME Message/Partial specification REPLY-TO address sets the e-mail address NeXTanswers uses These commands return information about the NeXTanswers system: HELP returns this help file INDEX returns the list of all available files INDEX BY DATE returns the list of files, sorted newest to oldest SEARCH keywords lists all files that contain all the keywords you list (ignoring capitalization) For example, a message with the following Subject line requests three files: Subject: 2101 2234 1109 A message with this body requests the same three files be sent as ASCII text files: 2101 2234 1109 ascii This message requests two lists of files, one for each search: Subject: SEARCH Dell SCSI SEARCH NetInfo domain NeXTanswers will reply to the address in your From: line. To use a different address either set your Reply-To: line, or use the NeXTanswers command REPLY-TO If you have any problem with the system or suggestions for improvement, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY FAX To use NeXTanswers by fax, call (415) 780-3990 from a touch-tone phone and follow the instructions. You'll be asked for your fax number, a number to identify your fax (like your phone extension or office number), and the ID numbers of the files you want. You can also request a list of available files. When you finish entering the file numbers, end the call and the files will be faxed to you. If you have problems using this fax system, please call Technical Support at 1-800-848-6398. You cannot use the fax system outside the U.S & Canada. USING NEXTANSWERS VIA THE WORLD-WIDE WEB To use NeXTanswers via the Internet World-Wide Web connect to NeXT's web server at URL http://www.next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY ANONYMOUS FTP To use NeXTanswers by Internet anonymous FTP, connect to FTP.NEXT.COM and read the help file pub/NeXTanswers/README. If you have problems using this, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY MODEM To use NeXTanswers via modem call the NeXTanswers BBS at (415) 780-2965. Log in as the user "guest", and enter the Files section. From there you can download NeXTanswers documents. FOR MORE HELP... If you need technical support for NEXTSTEP beyond the information available from NeXTanswers, call the Support Hotline at 1-800-955-NeXT (outside the U.S. call +1-415-424-8500) to speak to a NEXTSTEP Technical Support Technician. If your site has a NeXT support contract, your site's support contact must make this call to the hotline. Otherwise, hotline support is on a pay-per-call basis. Thanks for using NeXTanswers! _________________________________________________________________ Written by: Eric P. Most go out in less than 24 hours. Postings that require editing because they do not contain information in a useable format, or have already been posted to other comp.sys.next.* groups may be delayed, or returned to you. If your posting is rejected, I'll try and make suggestions about what should be changed where possible. Obviously off charter messages (spams, open-letters, etc) may not get a response. Content Guidelines ================== Try to keep submissions short and concise (80-100 lines max). Include full instructions on contacting you (where applicable) All Postings e-mail address, telephone (optional) Press Release toll-free voice phone, toll-free fax, voice phone, fax phone mailing address,info@blahblah.com,retail price, educational price availability Software available ftp site full path to file IN URL FORMAT supported CPU's for binary distributions, OS version requirements Meeting Announcements location of meeting, time of meeting, speakers expected Signatures will be deleted automatically, so please don't rely on your .sig for the contact information Please double check all information you are posting for accuracy. If you are announcing software available by FTP, make sure the copy on the archive site is good. Announcement of Product Sales ============================= This is an area of announcement that has caused me terrible grief in the past. The policy is tilted towards the ISV, which has worked out well in the past. Posts that announce sales of products that you are DIRECTLY involved in the development of are OK. Posts from companies trying to sell other products are evaluated on an individual basis. Time Sensitive Announcements ============================ Many times an announcement should coincide with a specific date. Unfortunately, that can be the worst time for you to get access to your internet connection to send the announcements to comp.sys.next.announce. In order to make comp.sys.next.announce as timely as possible, I will accept "post-dated" announcements for release on a specific future date. All information will be kept confidential until the requested release date, and NDAs will be signed where required to ensure this. Hopefully this will make these announcements arrive at users sites as quickly as if you posted them directly to comp.sys.next.whatever. Submissions can be sent to next-announce@digifix.com. OICTableView is a subclass of the NSTableView. With this class it is possible to change the sort order of the TableColumns - in the running program or in the IB test mode - with a simple mouse click. I included a simple inspector for the InterfaceBuilder so that you can change the default sort order and the data Cell (NSTextFieldCell, NSImageCell, NSComboBoxCell) of the TableColumns. There is also an inspector for the data Cell itself included. Btw. this project is also an example for an inspector via the class IBInspectorManager. This software comes without any warranty of any kind. I am not responsible for any damage that may occur as a result of using this software. Please keep in mind that this is a work in progress, and bear with the incomplete nature of this software. The software is currently available via anonymous ftp at: ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/openstep/mach/sourcelibrary/OICTableView.1.0.m.NIS.bs.tar.gz or ftp://ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de/pub/NeXT/developer/libs/classes/OICTableView.1.0.NIS.bs.tar.gz Source code =========== The source code is included, so if you modify the source code, please send a copy of the modifications to me <jm@oic.de>. For the Copyright see below. The source code is - maybe - a little bit ugly, but please remember it is a "quick and dirty" hack... :-)... Architectures ============= ALL Architectures (INTEL, MOTOROLA and SUN). Documentation ============= Sorry, but in the moment I'm to busy to write documentation :-), but I guess the classes are easy to handle :-). From: support@Radical.Com (Radical Product Support) Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: MIME Compliant RadicalNews.0.9.1 Date: 3 Jun 1997 05:36:38 GMT Organization: Radical System Solutions, Inc. Message-ID: <5n0ah6$95$1@news.digifix.com> June 2, 1997 - Anaheim Hills, California. Radical System Solutions, a long-time provider of object oriented expertise to the professional market, is proud to release the latest free beta version of RadicalNews. RadicalNews is an advanced object-oriented newsreader, designed for the discriminating NEXTSTEP marketplace. RadicalNews 0.9.1 provides MIME compliant USENET news reading and posting and in-line image displaying of both MIME images and "ordinary" UUENCODED images. Non-image binary data is displayed as an icon and launched on a double-click. To display images other than tiff, you will need to install an appropriate image filter such as OmniImage or ImageViewer. New Features: MIME SUPPORT: - The following MIME types/subtypes are supported on reading: text/plain text/enriched text/html (displayed as icon -- launched via double-click in your web browser) image/<image-type> (displayed in-line if proper image filter is installed) application/<application-type> (displayed as icon) audio/<audio-type> (displayed as icon) video/<video-type> (displayed as icon) multipart/mixed multipart/alternative (message/rfc822 and message/partial will be supported in a future release) - The following MIME types/subtypes are supported for posting: text/plain (with appropriate character set indication) - The following MIME transfer encoding types are supported: base64 quoted-printable x-uuencode 7bit 8bit - The following MIME character sets are supported: us-ascii iso-8859-1 iso-2022-jp (requires RadicalNews-J for Japanese character display) IMAGE DISPLAYING: - UUENCODED or BASE64 images are now displayed in-line if the entire image is contained within one post. - Drag & Drop Images -- Images can be dragged from the news display directly, or launched into your favorite image application with a double-click. - Images are automatically removed on Follow-ups, email forwards, or email replies and replaced with "[***<Image Removed>***]". PROBLEMS FIXED: - Find panel now works properly with MIME and "ordinary" articles. - Article headers are now decoded properly when archived. - "Post and Reply" now encodes email into the character set indicated in the Post Viewer window. KNOWN PROBLEMS: - Printing news articles with embedded images does not print the image. (Work-around: double-click on the image and print it from an image viewer). - Text viewer does not scroll horizontally when image exceeds right text boundary (Work-around: double-click on the image to launch it into an image viewer). RadicalNews is built quad-fat, running on Motorola, Intel, Sparc, and HP platforms with NEXTSTEP 3.2 or later. (NEXTSTEP 3.0/3.1 will work, but are not supported.) The J version requires NEXTSTEP-J. The beta version is free, and will run until December 31, 1997. After the beta period, a license may be purchased. The beta version may be available via anonymous ftp at: ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/demos/news/RadicalNews.0.9.1.NIHS.b.tar.gz ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/demos/news/RadicalNewsJ.0.9.1.NIHS.b.tar.gz ftp://peanuts.leo.org/pub/next/Network/news/RadicalNews.0.9.1.NIHS.b.tar.gz ftp://peanuts.leo.org/pub/next/Network/news/RadicalNewsJ.0.9.1.NIHS.b.tar.gz Our web site will have updated information and links to the most current version: http://www.radical.com/ For further information, contact: Radical System Solutions, Inc. mailto:RadicalNews@Radical.Com

Other versions of NEXTSTEP are untested, but 3.x and 4.x should work. Other hardware platforms (sparc and hppa) are untested too, but they should als work. Squid doesn't come with any documentation worth mentioning, but /usr/local/squid/bin/squid -h will give the options and http://squid.nlanr.net has some links to a bit of documentation. Squid-1.1.9 compiles out of the box, Squid-1.1.10 needs a small patch, which is submitted to the developers and should turn up in the next release. All information will be kept confidential until the requested release date, and NDAs will be signed where required to ensure this. From: Tom Hageman <tom@basil.icce.rug.nl> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: Carl Edman's mailapp-utilities, version 2.0 Date: 10 Jun 1997 02:41:25 GMT Organization: Warty Wolfs Message-ID: <5niesl$ki8$1@news.digifix.com> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- This is a release of Carl Edman's mailapp-utilities. These are some command line tools useful in conjunction with Mail.app. `Nextmail' has a command line interface similar to UCB mail but instead of sending the letter it puts it in a Mail.app compose window. `Appnmail' appends messages to the end of Mail.app mailboxes while taking care to properly handle locks, NeXT mail and the table of contents. `Compactmail' compacts Mail.app mailboxes just like the Compact menu item does. In addition, there is also a small utility called `listmail' which lists Mail.app table_of_contents. New features since 1.8: * appnmail now knows how to incorporate messages into a mailbox while it is open in Mail.app -- no need to close and re-open the mailbox in order to let appnmail do its job anymore! (This may not work with earlier versions of Mail.app; I think it should work with all 3.x versions, but it is tested only with 3.3 and 4.[012]) * appnmail has been made more robust: it now saves its message to disk as soon as possible, to a temporary mbox if need be, to minimize the chance of losing messages in a system crash. * Installables are now distributed in an Installer package. Source code and quad-fat executables are included. See the accompanying README file for more information. It can be found at: <ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/mail/mailapp-utilities.2.0.NIHS.bs.tar.gz> <ftp://ftp.next.peak.org/pub/next/apps/mail/mailapp-utilities.2.0.README> [It should turn up at ftp://peanuts.leo.org/ in a few days...] Please report any bugs or suggestions to <mailapp-utilities@basil.icce.rug.nl>. From: Eric Tremblay <ericet@CAM.ORG> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: EmptyQ OpenStep Version 2.0 (The mail utility) Date: 10 Jun 1997 03:00:29 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <5nig0d$kui$1@news.digifix.com> EmptyQ Version 2.0 by Eric Tremblay (ericet@cam.org) Submitted to: ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/openstep/submissions Should end up in: ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/openstep/apps/mail Intro: ====== EmptyQ is an application that will empty your mail queue. Which is usually located at /usr/spool/mqueue. Please note that you need to be "connected" to your internet service provider in order for the mail to be sent. (Your ppp link needs to be active.) EmptyQ simply sends a /usr/lib/sendmail -q command. Which can be also done in a terminal shell. The reason I made this program is that several non-technical people use my computer. This program makes it easy for them to make sure that thier e-mail was sent instantly, once they log on to the ISP. This OpenStep Version was greatly fixed up and simplified compared to Version 1.0 running on NEXTSTEP. As you can see from the source code, the program itself is ONLY 4 lines of code!!! Special thanks to Samy Toutai for his help. I hope that this program will be useful for other people out there in NEXTSTEP/OpenStep land. The Package: ============ Version 2.0 comes complete in a tar.gz package. Which includes: - EmptyQ.app A FAT OpenStep binary for NeXT, Intel and Sparc hardware - README.TXT This file - SpecialOffer Information about a special offer for the Nebula CDROM - Includes Full Source Code - FAT OpenStep binary, NeXT, Intel and SPARC. Compiling: ========== This version includes all the source code necessary to recompile the program from scratch on OpenStep 4.0+ systems. From: cs@hal.kph.tuwien.ac.at Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: vmount 0.6a Date: 12 Jun 1997 21:00:08 GMT Organization: Vienna University of Technology, Austria Message-ID: <5npo0o$bqp$1@news.digifix.com> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Version 0.6a of vmount is now available from ftp://peanuts.leo.org/pub/comp/platforms/next/Unix/disk/vmount* ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/apps/utils/disk/vmount* ftp://hal.kph.tuwien.ac.at/pub/NeXT/tools/vmount/ The files "vmount-Linux-2.0.25.s.gnutar.gz" and "vmount-ntfs-cs.s.gnutar.gz" have not changed! There is no need to waste bandwidth if you have already fetched them with a previous version. * What does vmount do? ====================== vmount allows you to mount non-NeXT filesystems on your NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP machine (Mach/Intel only). You can mount disks formatted with Windows VFAT (long filenames on DOS filesystem), NTFS, Linux EXT 2 and several other filesystems. It also handles multi-session CDs better than NeXT's iso9660 implementation. For integration with Workspace's autmounting mechanism, there is a GUI frontend available. It's called MountMe.app and you can download a time-limited beta version from our web-page at http://www.ObjectiveD.co.at/ObjectiveD/commercial/mountme.htm * What has changed? =================== Changes from 0.4 to 0.5 - Made interface more mount-like (vmount goes to background now) - Added vumount utility to unmount things - Use syslog for error logging because we run as daemon now - Added fixed uid mode - Option -i scans for filesystem types Changes from 0.5 to 0.6 - fixed bug with "fixed UID mode": chmod and chown did not work Changes from 0.6 to 0.6a - increased NFS timeout from 5s to 20s (necessary for floppies) * What do I need to run vmount? =============================== To run vmount: 1.) An i386 based machine (i386 is the CPU-class, not the actual processor). 2.) NEXTSTEP 3.2 or higher (I have only tested on 4.0, however). To compile from the sources: 1.) NEXTSTEP 3.3 Developer or higher. I have also tested with gcc 2.7.2 and NEXTSTEP 3.2 Developer, this works too. gcc 2.2.2, which comes with 3.2 Developer, complains about prototype mismatches for built in functions. This can probably be solved easily, but I have not tried. You should edit the Makefile to reflect the compiler you intend to use. 2.) GNU-make. Openstep 4.0 and higher comes with GNU-make, it is available under the name "gnumake". And, of course, you need the vmount distribution: vmount.0.6a.I.b.gnutar.gz for the binary only distribution vmount.0.6a.I.s.gnutar.gz for the vmount sources vmount-Linux-2.0.25.s.gnutar.gz for the Linux filesystem sources You only need it if you want to build from the sources. This directory contains the "fs" and "include" hierarchy of the Linux kernel sources. "fs" contains only the filesystem specific subdirectories. vmount-ntfs-cs.s.gnutar.gz for the modified ntfs sources * Copyright =========== Vmount is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. From: cs@hal.kph.tuwien.ac.at Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: BETA TEST: MountMe.app -- free until Sep. 1st, 1997 Date: 12 Jun 1997 21:04:09 GMT Organization: Vienna University of Technology, Austria Message-ID: <5npo89$c1s$1@news.digifix.com> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ObjectiveD announces the availability of MountMe.app beta. WHAT IS IT? Let me explain it with a simple scenario: You have a drive for removable media, maybe a ZIP or JAZ drive or simply your floppy, you insert an NTFS, EXT2 or VFAT formatted medium and it is automatically mounted by the Workspace Manager. The icon appears in the File Viewer, you perform some file operations on the medium, select Disk/Eject in the Workspace menu and the medium is ejected. That's what MountMe.app (together with vmount) can do for you. Supported filesystems (among others) are: Windows VFAT (long filenames on DOS disks), NTFS (read only), Linux EXT2, Minix, iso9660 (with improved multi-session support) and HPFS (read only). AVAILABILITY Installer packages for both, MountMe.app and vmount, are available from our web site: http://www.ObjectiveD.co.at/ObjectiveD/commercial/mountme.htm Both are compiled for Intel architecture only (_not_ quad fat), because vmount is not available for other architectures (and MountMe requires vmount). You need NEXTSTEP 3.X/Intel or OPENSTEP 4.X/Mach/Intel to run MountMe.app. If you already have vmount, be sure to use at least version 0.6a. PRICE The beta version is free until September 1st, 1997. Licenses will be available for US$49 (but you can always request a free time-limited key for evaluation). Information about ordering and payment will be available from our web site before the expiry date. This version was released 6 June 1997. It was compiled for NeXT on 13 Jun 1997. Needless to say, it has not been all that well tested. Actually I have not got the configuration done at my own machine. But I was thinking that whoever might be interested in helping me figure it out would want to know it themselves as well :-) (As with any beta program, there may be bugs, and a new version could be released at any time... However the previous version was 6 mos ago so hopefully this one will be around for awhile!) COMPILING FOR NS: There was only one change necessary to make it work: In 'extensions.c' in the 'src' directory Change this: #ifdef HAVE_REGEX_H #include <regex.h> #endif to this: /*#ifdef HAVE_REGEX_H #include <regex.h> #endif */ (Thanks to Rex Dieter <rdieter@math.unl.edu> who told me how to fix that!) Anyone who gets this up and running, please let me know and you can help me too :-? TjL <luomat@peak.org> ps -- the compiled binaries are in the 'bin' folder. The rest of the distribution is the same as you would get it from ftp://wuarchive.wustl.edu/packages/wuarchive-ftpd/academ-betas/wu-ftpd-2.4.2-beta-13.tar.gz EXCEPT the 'extensions.c' has been modified as above (the original version has been saved as 'extensions.c.ORIG') You can find them here: ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/apps/internet/ftp/wu-ftpd.2.4.2-beta-13.NIHS.bs.tar.gz ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/apps/internet/ftp/wu-ftpd.2.4.2-beta-13.README and linked to ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/new_arrivals/wu-ftpd.2.4.2-beta-13.NIHS.bs.tar.gz ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/new_arrivals/wu-ftpd.2.4.2-beta-13.README -- TjL <luomat@peak.org> / http://www.peak.org/~luomat/next/ NeXT bookmarks: http://www.peak.org/~luomat/next/bookmarks.html sed 's/End\ of\ sig/pithy\ quotation/g'

June 12, 1997 San Diego, CA: Starr.Com, a leading software innovator, today announced a security extension for Apple's WebObjects 3.0 with WOAccess 1.0. Corporate-wide use of WebObjects over the Internet is strengthened through a well integrated authentication and access-control framework. WOAccess provides users seamless and transparent login, authentication and certification services for WebObjects applications. WOAccess addresses WebObjects customer's security needs by: - Dynamic authentication of components (i.e. objects). WebObjects generates "pages" as on-screen elements composed from multiple components. User's requests for access to "pages" returns data built in the form of components. Authenticating WebObject "request components" and "response components" protects who can have access, to what. - Smart Redirects use metadata to intelligently route access denials to more appropriate pages. - Authentication of machines and users. manages unauthorized user access by enforcing mutual authentication on IP address (incl. netmask) or domain name and/or "users" and "groups" files. Authentication is available for access to the application or components. - Certification through WebObject components force user's to identify and authenticate for the application or individual components. - Open API (Application Programming Interface). an extensible framework to integrate WebObjects with legacy systems, databases, etc... The security framework has been well received by systems integrators during the beta test. Online documentation includes programming examples for authenticating from user files, a user database or Apache server file. Example implementations also demonstrate authentication using http or WebObjects components. "Clients need us to look at all the alternatives (RadNet, Sapphire/Web, DynaWeb, ColdFusion, WebObjects) and make a recommendation. The fact that there are add-ons to WebObjects, like WOAccess, will score big points, by proving that the framework is open." --Dave Coyle PhD Cambridge Technology Partners, Frankfurt, Germany Starr.Com will custom develop components for WOAccess to meet customer's requirements. WOAccess is one component from Starr.Com's several WebObjects products developed for secure and confidential Internet use. "Starr.Com is proving the extensibility of WebObjects with their WOAccess product. WOAccess components give customers functionality their web-based applications need, available off-the-shelf." --David Kay, WebObjects Product Line Manager Apple Computer WOAccess 1.0 is available for all WebObjects supported platforms. WOAccess requires a Developer license to program and Machine licenses for deployment. Developer priced at $4950 for unlimited-development includes one (1) Machine license. Deployment pricing is: Machines $/each 1 $ 0 2-10 $ 400 10-25 $ 299 25-50 $ 189 SITE LICENSE $ quote UNLIMITED MACHINES $ call WOAccess 1.0 is available now for Windows NT, Sun Solaris, HP-UX and OPENSTEP 'Mach' platforms. Exception to the crossposting restrictions: announcements of usenet RFDs or CFVs, when made by the news.announce.newgroups moderator, may be simultaneously crossposted to all c.s.n.* newsgroups. I am only filling in for two months while the "real" Product Manager is on sabbatical, after which I intend to resume my normal life of management consultant by day, computer groupie by night. However, before I disappear behind the Silicon Curtain, before I am an Official Apple Employee, I just wanted to share with you my vision of the world I would like to help create. Or rather, a world that I would like you to help create. I am not a professional programmer or computer scientist. I am just a guy who believes computers can be a powerful tool which people can use to change the world. And I want to do what I can to help computers reach their potential, primarily by helping computer -users- reach their potential. Computers are amazing devices in their ability to perform a wide variety of tasks, but all too often this comes at the expense of failing to perform a single task very well - the task that you want it to do! There are many reasons for this mismatch between technology and user needs, but let me focus on one key area where I hope that I - and you - can make a difference. Software development has traditionally been such an expensive, arduous and time consuming process that a) developers had to be experts on technology, not on human problems b) products were designed to satisfy static requirements, not dynamic communities c) the development process largely excluded user involvement Rhapsody, as the only mass-market operating system designed from the ground-up to support object-oriented software development, has the potential to break these compromises and change the rules of software development. If it succeeds, it should provide incredible power and ease of use to end users, developers, and system administrators. I believe Apple has assembled one of the greatest teams of engineers, scientists, and design specialists ever seen in the software industry. I believe they have the tools, support, and vision to pull it off. However, they lack one thing, the one thing that makes the crucial difference between a product that revolutionizes the world and one that merely looks impressive. It is the one thing I most want to give to Apple: You. You, the guy who fights with his mail application, or labors over updating web pages, or dreams of writing a "killer app" that crushes the Big Guys, or merely wants to transform her little corner of the world. I want Rhapsody, along with the tools, programs, and community it engenders, to be the vehicle for making your dreams come true. Not just a dream of how a computer should work, but dreams of community, freedom, learning, love - the stuff people live and die for all over the world. Apple has always been about helping people realize their dreams, and it has made many dreams come true. But in all honesty, Apple was hampered both by its technology, and its culture. Like most great insitutions, it lost sight of its original focus - you, the ultimate consumer - and got caught up in esoteric dreams of greatness. That's changed. Apple has been humbled, and it is reaching out. The acquisition of NeXT, and Apple's commitment to Java and open systems are the signs of a sea change. In a tiny way, bringing in an outsider like myself to work alongside marketing is also a sign of that change. I am no Silicon Valley insider, or hot shot programmer. I'm just like you. I use a computer to balance my checkbook, write love letters, and send email. I've written games for my friends, technical analyses as a student, and mission critical custom apps for a multinational corporation. I've lugged notebooks across the world to share presentations and datafiles with clients, and I've setup PPP and Ethernet networks in my home. And all along, I've often thought: there has to be a better way. If I could, I'd love to sit down with each and every one of you, to hear your dreams for your life and the world, and figure out what small part a computer might play in helping you realize them. But I can't. Even if I had the time, my loyalty is to Apple, to be part of their Voice. I can't be your voice. But, what I can do, what I hope to do, is help you find your voice. To bring people together, where they can fight through the tradeoffs and priorities that are an inevitable part of any democratic community. And then, to be Apple's Eyes and Ears, to see your concerns, hear what you're saying, feel your pain. And then to do whatever I can within Apple, to make sure your voices are heard. To do this, I have asked some friends of mine to setup two mail aliases For developers, devideas@stepwise.com by Don Yacktman, of The Object Foundation For users, userideas@nula.com by Tim Byars of NeXT Users Los Angeles These two have committed to sorting through all the mail that is sent to these lists, and identifying the biggest concerns in those communities. Whether it is a matter of technology, communication, or business. And I have gauranteed them my time and attention to understand those concerns, and my passion and energy to communicate those to the Apple community. I have to be honest with you. Product Managers have no real authority, and as a short-termer and outsider I could very well have less than usual. I am also a realist and a capitalist: Apple has to make money, and soon, and that means shipping a product as quickly as possible, not catering to everyone's hopes and dreams. However, I am enough of an idealist to believe that a company like Apple can only survive if it succeeds in truly understanding its customers. More than almost any other American company, Apple isn't about products, it is about people. It is about changing the world. It did it once with the Apple II, then again with the Macintosh. WIth your help, I believe it may yet have one more revolution in it. I don't know for sure if I can do anything, or even if you can do anything. But I know I have to try. Will you join me? FILES GSPrintFilter.1.30.tar.gz: REQUIRED Setup instructions and documentation to install ghostscript as a NEXTSTEP/OpenStep printer filter. ghostscript.5.00.NIHS.b.tar.gz: REQUIRED Aladdin ghostscript version 5.00 binary and associated files. Installation of this package is optional if you already have homebrewed gs binaries, but you will need to modify the setup instructions appropriately to reflect the different installation and locations of files. Includes all output targets/drivers. ghostscriptMin.5.00.NIHS.b.tar.gz: OPTIONAL A minimal build of Aladdin ghostscript version 5.00 and associated files. Includes most printer output targets/drivers and no documentation or examples. ghostscriptPSFonts.5.00.tar.gz OPTIONAL Aladdin ghostscript fonts: CenturySchoolBook, CharterBT, Nimbus*, Shareware-Cyrillic, URW*, Utopia. Extracted from font packages distributed with ghostscript, and translated into native NEXTSTEP-style (.font wrapper) PS fonts. ghostscriptFonts.5.00.tar.gz OPTIONAL Aladdin ghostscript fonts (non-postscript): Hershey. CHANGES 1.30 - Split distribution AGAIN. Sorry. But splitting the ghostscript port from GSPrintFilter makes sense. - Upgrade to Aladdin Ghostscript 5.0. - ghostscript supports file descriptor-based streamed I/O, which should magically cure the "Parallel port driver losing data" problem. - Updated to v1.1 of cdj850 driver. - lpd.filter automatically recognizes and implements device aliases and their corresponding hacks and driver configurations. - Fontmap defs have been split intelligently across separate packages. - Rebuilt most of ghostscript's ps fonts into NeXTSTEP ps fonts. SUPPORTED PRINTERS This version of ghostscript supports primarily Epson, Canon BubbleJet, HP DeskJet, HP LaserJet, HP PaintJet printers. Any printer capable of emulating these types of printers is also naturally supported. From: stephan@onevision.de Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: JOB: OneVision is looking for software engineers Date: 20 Jun 1997 22:21:11 GMT Organization: OneVision Vertriebs-GmbH, Regensburg, Germany Message-ID: <5oevon$1o4$1@news.digifix.com> The german company OneVision Vertriebs-GmbH is looking for skilled software developers to augment their development team. We are in search of people who enjoy developing software and who like to work in a team. What is OneVision doing ? OneVision is a software company that specialized in digital PrePress and the publishing market. With our products for editing PS and PDF we are one step ahead. Our development division is working with the OpenStep development environment. All new products are meant to work both on Windows/NT and Apple s Rhapsody as a matter of priority. At the moment OneVision employs 40 people, ten of whom are working in the R & D department. Presently, OneVision offers three products:OV-DigiScript, OV-DigiServer, and OV-Imposition. DigiScript allows the import of PDF and PostScript in any form. The content of the document can be edited with publishing tools and afterwards a clean and optimized PostScript or PDF can be produced. DigiServer allows automated processing of PDF, PostScript, etc. With our imposition software OV-Imposition the pages of a document can be arranged on sheets; please also refer to our web page www.onevision.de. OneVision GmbH is based in Regensburg, about 120 km north of Munich. Regensburg has approximately 140.000 inhabitants and the old part of the town is really picturesque. Presently, we are offering the following jobs: Typesetting/word processing: Production and maintenance of typesetting software for our integrated publishing system. PostScript or PDF: Programming regarding every aspect of PostScript and PDF. Technical Documentation: Production of small example programs and technical documentation in English language (for an API) has first priority. For this position native speakers are preferred. Previous experience in one of the above mentioned areas and/or in OpenStep-programming are desirable. As mentioned above, we are looking for motivated team players and not for individual fighters. Presently, we are neither looking for people working freelance nor for developers preferring to work externally. Besides our requirements we also have a lot to offer: OneVision shows an extraordinary working atmosphere. For us, software development in the graphic area means an interesting and challenging job. Our company offers independent work and flexible working hours. We are looking forward to your application. The site provides an informal collection of pointers, references, and starting points for developers who are using the Prelude to Rhapsody bundle, distributed at this year's Worldwide Developer Conference. OpenStep/NEXTSTEP/Rhapsody Related Usenet Newsgroups ==================================================== COMP.SYS.NEXT.ADVOCACY This is the "why NEXTSTEP is better (or worse) than anything else in the known universe" forum. It was created specifically to divert lengthy flame wars from .misc. COMP.SYS.NEXT.ANNOUNCE Announcements of general interest to the NeXT community (new products, FTP submissions, user group meetings, commercial announcements etc.) This is a moderated newsgroup, meaning that you can't post to it directly. Submissions should be e-mailed to next-announce@digifix.com where the moderator (Scott Anguish) will screen them for suitability. Messages posted to announce should NOT be posted or crossposted to any other comp.sys.next groups. COMP.SYS.NEXT.BUGS A place to report verifiable bugs in NeXT-supplied software. Material e-mailed to Bug_NeXT@NeXT.COM is not published, so this is a place for the net community find out about problems when they're discovered. This newsgroup has a very poor signal/noise ratio--all too often bozos post stuff here that really belongs someplace else. It rarely makes sense to crosspost between this and other c.s.n.* newsgroups, but individual reports may be germane to certain non-NeXT-specific groups as well. COMP.SYS.NEXT.HARDWARE Discussions about NeXT-label hardware and compatible peripherals, and non-NeXT-produced hardware (e.g. COMP.SYS.NEXT.MARKETPLACE NeXT stuff for sale/wanted. Material posted here must not be crossposted to any other c.s.n.* newsgroup, but may be crossposted to misc.forsale.computers.workstation or appropriate regional newsgroups. COMP.SYS.NEXT.MISC For stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else. Anything you post here by definition doesn't belong anywhere else in c.s.n.*--i.e. no crossposting!!! COMP.SYS.NEXT.PROGRAMMER Questions and discussions of interest to NEXTSTEP programmers. COMP.SYS.NEXT.SOFTWARE This is a place to talk about [third party] software products that run on NEXTSTEP systems. COMP.SYS.NEXT.SYSADMIN Stuff relating to NeXT system administration issues; in rare cases this will spill over into .programmer or .software. ** RELATED NEWSGROUPS ** COMP.SOFT-SYS.NEXTSTEP Like comp.sys.next.software and comp.sys.next.misc combined. Exists because NeXT is a software-only company now, and comp.soft-sys is for discussion of software systems with scope similar to NEXTSTEP. COMP.LANG.OBJECTIVE-C Technical talk about the Objective-C language. Implemetations discussed include NeXT, Gnu, Stepstone, etc. COMP.OBJECT Technical talk about OOP in general. Getting the Newsgroups without getting News =========================================== Thanks to Michael Ross at antigone.com, the main NEXTSTEP groups are now available as a mailing list digest as well. next-nextstep next-advocacy next-announce next-bugs next-hardware next-marketplace next-misc next-programmer next-software next-sysadmin object lang-objective-c (For a full description, send mail to listserv@antigone.com). Therefore, all users of the MailTIFFs database programs are strongly encouraged to update. NOTE: if this version proves reliable, it will probably be the last release for the users of *NEXTSTEP 3.2* and earlier versions. ----------------------- Applications that are compatible with the NEXTTOYOU MailTIFFs database right now are: Mail.app Alexandra.app (version 0.82.mod) HNNews.app (version >= 0.96) ----------------------- >From the README: The NEXTTOYOU MailTIFFs database consists of a set of programs to be installed on your computer and a global MailTIFFs server provided by NEXTTOYOU. In addition to MailTIFF.database.1.1.b.NIHS.tar.gz, if * you use NEXTSTEP <3.3 and you don't already have installed the Z shell zsh, you'll need zsh.3.0.2.NIHS.bs.tar.gz * you want to use the MailTIFFs mechanism also for usenet but your current newsreader does not already support the NEXTTOYOU MailTIFFs database format, you'll need either the compiled Alexandra.0.82.mod.NIHS.b.tar.gz or, if you want to recompile Alexandra yourself, Alexandra.TiffPatch.s.tar.gz. If at the time you install the programs there are already archives in ftp://ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de/pub/NeXT/misc/NEXTTOYOU/MailTIFFs/Archiv, be sure to retrieve them (either the global archive or all quarterly archives) and copy the MailTIFFs they contain into LocalLibrary/Images/People. MailTIFFs in these archives are not accessible separately and cannot be retrieved by fetchMailTIFFs. Even if you don't use the NEXTTOYOU MailTIFFs database mechanism yourself, please contribute to our effort to make the usenet a less anonymous place and submit your MailTIFF to our database !!! Your MailTIFF should have a size of 64 x 64 pixel and be LZW compressed. Name it user@address.tiff (where user@address is your email address) and send it via NeXTMail to MailTIFFs@nexttoyou.de If you write from more than one email address, you should also include a so-called aliases file which lists your alternative email addresses. The file must be a plain ASCII file named user@address.aliases (where user@address is exactly the same email address you used to name your MailTIFF). In this file, write your alternative email addresses, one each line, each line finished by Return. If you use no-spam fake addresses in usenet (e.g. user@address.NOSPAM), please remember to also include these addresses as aliases. There is *no* risk for you in doing so, but it allows newsreaders to make use of the MailTIFFs database, too. An example for a submission would be: SteveJobs@next.com.tiff SteveJobs@next.com.aliases --> this is an ASCII file including the lines: SteveJobs@advisory.apple.com Steve@microsoft.haters.net SteveJobs@next.com.NOSPAM SteveJobs@advisory.apple.com.NOSPAM Steve@microsoft.haters.net.NOSPAM If you want to update your picture, just send a new MailTIFF of *exactly the same name* to MailTIFFs@nexttoyou.de. It will automatically replace the old one in all people's MailTIFFs databases. If your mail address changes, just send a new aliases file of *exactly the same name* to MailTIFFs@nexttoyou.de. The new aliases it contains will automatically be added to all people's aliases files. It was made to give everyone another safety tool to fight fraud. This OpenStep application is based on the cc_cksum.c program that appeared in the 2600 magazine. (Which issue? I don't know...) All credit card numbers have a checksum number which permits you to verify if the number actually makes sense. Meaning if the number that you have is a possible number. Even if the number passes the checksum test it does not mean it's an actual valid number. So if you can, please verify with the proper authorities for the validity of the number. If you cannot, hopefully this application will help you a bit, but don't count on it... This program is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but without any warranty; without even the implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
