This is a bug fix release. The files are ThreadedApp.1.0.1.s.tar.gz and ThreadedApp.README and should appear in ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next/sourcelibrary/classes By popular demand, ThreadedApp is in the process of being donated to MiscKit. Thanks for the response! --- Chris Roehrig croehrig@House.ORG Neuroscience and Computer Science at University of British Columbia, Vancouver http://www.House.ORG/chris http://www.sns.cs.ubc.ca/chris Here's the README file: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ThreadedApp v 1.0.1 This is a bug-fix release. Chris Roehrig <croehrig@House.ORG> March 1997 Writing multi-threaded applications in NEXTSTEP is not as easy as it could be. I wrote ThreadedApp to make it easy to write multi-threaded applications that use the AppKit. In particular, it provides an easy mechanism for threads to use the AppKit features in a safe and robust way. All source code in this module can be freely distributed and modified providing the copyright notice remains intact. So now there's no excuse not to use threads! Let's make those Apps RESPONSIVE! ThreadedApp Support for multi-threaded applications for NEXTSTEP 3.3. ThreadedApp is a subclass of Application that contains the functionality of the OpenStep NSThread object, but also provides increased support for interaction with the AppKit. The AppKit is not thread-safe and only the main thread can use it. All other threads must message the main thread to perform any functions (drawing, etc) that involve the AppKit. ThreadedApp does this by introducing the notion of callback methods. This is a flexible mechanism whereby a thread can request that the main application thread invoke a method on its behalf. This allows a thread to have virtually full access to the AppKit in a way that is easy to understand and use. The callback mechanism uses Mach messages to make requests to the main AppKit thread. The main thread only receives the messages when it is in an event loop, so it is crucial that the main thread remains responsive to events. (This is only good user-interface design anyways.) ThreadedApp provides support for locking shared data or code via the CJRLock and CJRConditionLock classes. These classes allow the main AppKit thread to "block" while waiting to acquire a lock, but still remain responsive to events so that other threads may still perform callbacks. Send any bug reports, comments, etc. to Chris Roehrig <croehrig@House.ORG> If you find ThreadedApp useful and are using it in an application, send me a note; I'd like to hear about it! Chris

This system allows you to request online technical documents, drivers, and other software, which are then sent to you automatically. You can request documents by fax or Internet electronic mail, read them on the world-wide web, transfer them by anonymous ftp, or download them from the BBS. NeXTanswers is an automated retrieval system. Requests sent to it are answered electronically, and are not read or handled by a human being. NeXTanswers does not answer your questions or forward your requests. USING NEXTANSWERS BY E-MAIL To use NeXTanswers by Internet e-mail, send requests to nextanswers@next.com. Files are sent as NeXTmail attachments by default; you can request they be sent as ASCII text files instead. To request a file, include that file's ID number in the Subject line or the body of the message. You can request several files in a single message. You can also include commands in the Subject line or the body of the message. These commands affect the way that files you request are sent: ASCII causes the requested files to be sent as ASCII text SPLIT splits large files into 95KB chunks, using the MIME Message/Partial specification REPLY-TO address sets the e-mail address NeXTanswers uses These commands return information about the NeXTanswers system: HELP returns this help file INDEX returns the list of all available files INDEX BY DATE returns the list of files, sorted newest to oldest SEARCH keywords lists all files that contain all the keywords you list (ignoring capitalization) For example, a message with the following Subject line requests three files: Subject: 2101 2234 1109 A message with this body requests the same three files be sent as ASCII text files: 2101 2234 1109 ascii This message requests two lists of files, one for each search: Subject: SEARCH Dell SCSI SEARCH NetInfo domain NeXTanswers will reply to the address in your From: line. To use a different address either set your Reply-To: line, or use the NeXTanswers command REPLY-TO If you have any problem with the system or suggestions for improvement, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY FAX To use NeXTanswers by fax, call (415) 780-3990 from a touch-tone phone and follow the instructions. You'll be asked for your fax number, a number to identify your fax (like your phone extension or office number), and the ID numbers of the files you want. You can also request a list of available files. When you finish entering the file numbers, end the call and the files will be faxed to you. If you have problems using this fax system, please call Technical Support at 1-800-848-6398. You cannot use the fax system outside the U.S & Canada. USING NEXTANSWERS VIA THE WORLD-WIDE WEB To use NeXTanswers via the Internet World-Wide Web connect to NeXT's web server at URL http://www.next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY ANONYMOUS FTP To use NeXTanswers by Internet anonymous FTP, connect to FTP.NEXT.COM and read the help file pub/NeXTanswers/README. If you have problems using this, please send mail to nextanswers-request@next.com. USING NEXTANSWERS BY MODEM To use NeXTanswers via modem call the NeXTanswers BBS at (415) 780-2965. Log in as the user "guest", and enter the Files section. From there you can download NeXTanswers documents. FOR MORE HELP... If you need technical support for NEXTSTEP beyond the information available from NeXTanswers, call the Support Hotline at 1-800-955-NeXT (outside the U.S. call +1-415-424-8500) to speak to a NEXTSTEP Technical Support Technician. If your site has a NeXT support contract, your site's support contact must make this call to the hotline. Otherwise, hotline support is on a pay-per-call basis. The good news is that now, I can say with confidence, that the line problems are solved, and that Stepwise and comp.sys.next.announce are both back to full working order. Basically the details are that, after fixing the snafu caused by the inept idiots at my old ISP, MCI kept dropping my routing because the router here was flapping (going up and down). This was caused by occassional, but massive numbers of errors being sent. Bell came out yesterday and started line tests and determined that it was the physical line that was wrong, and early on Tuesday that tracked down the exact location and replaced it with fiber optic cable (oooooo). Now everything is humming again. Really... http://www.stepwise.com Outgoing feeds of comp.sys.next.announce When I asked this the other day I didn't really expect the replies I got. So let me clarify a few things, and update the status. In order to accept an outging comp.sys.next.announce feed, you'd need to be running INN or some other news server software, and be in a position to make the changes to allow me to feed you the messages. Currently, comp.sys.next.announce is fed to - news.blacksmith.com - news.omnigroup.com (thanks Ken!) - istar.ca - xenitec.on.ca - afs.com (thanks Greg!) From here it gets dispersed to their upstream news sites, and spreads. Its probably overkill, but I'd like to get one or two more feeds, either someone just off of bbnplannet or sprintlink and someone off alternet... And I'd also be interested in a European outgoing feed as well. -- Scott Anguish DBS Online - http://www.dbs-online.com/DBS sanguish@digifix.com Stepwise OpenStep WWW - http://www.stepwise.com

So far, however, NEXTTOYOU has been very expensive in the U.S. due to exorbitantly high shipping costs. Because of a new distribution channel we are now able to deliver NEXTTOYOU inside the U.S. at realistic prices. NEXTTOYOU appears quarterly at season's start and costs (including shipping): annual single subscription issue US $ 30 $ 8.50 EU DM 46 DM 13 NEXTTOYOU currently is the only printed NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP magazine worldwide. First published in 1994 to provide the NEXTSTEP community with a platform both for neophytes and professionals, it has enjoyed steady growth since then and right now experiences another leap in interest due to the upcoming new Apple operating system based on OPENSTEP technology. NEXTTOYOU also provides a great advertisement opportunity for those companies that want to position themselves early in the newly emerging OPENSTEP/Rhapsody marketplace.

Message-ID: <5igru7$19f$1@news.digifix.com> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Walt Beisheim Running Start, Inc. 620/661-0805 (5795 FAX) walt@running-start.com http://www.running-start.com RUNNING START DELIVERS ELECTRONIC COMMERCE SOLUTION FOR XTENSION.COM TUCSON AZ., April 9, 1997 Running Start, Inc today announced the deployment of the first website to utilize their on-line catalog and shopping system. The Media-Network site, xtension.com (SM), is a comprehensive sales and information web site for QuarkXTensions and can be accessed via the URL: http://www.xtension.com At xtension.com, customers can browse and view information on a wide selection of QuarkXTensions, add products from multiple vendors to their shopping basket, and make purchases using various forms of payment including on-line credit card transactions. Purchased products are then available for immediate download and/or packaged shipment. Vendors can administer their product offerings and access sales reports remotely using an intuitive web interface. This alleviates the need for extensive content administration by Media-Network. "We are excited by the results of this development effort" said Walt Beisheim, Vice President of Marketing for Running Start. "Our collaboration with the Media-Network has produced a solution focused on solving real-world electronic commerce issues such as multi-vendor support and on-line transaction handling." Running Start?s Commerce System provides a complete underlying framework for the creation of any type of web-based catalog sales application. Its Object-Oriented, modular design based on Apple Computer's WebObjects technology is extensible, scalable and easy to customize and integrate. Applications created using the Commerce System conform to the practices used by an organization instead of forcing the use of new procedures. The system was developed in collaboration with Media-Network to provide a comprehensive set of components to meet all the potential needs of a web commerce application. "Working with Running Start to help define the specifications for their Commerce System was a real benefit for us", said Cloude Porteus, IS Architect at Media-Network. Submissions should be e-mailed to next-announce@digifix.com where the moderator (Scott Anguish) will screen them for suitability. Messages posted to announce should NOT be posted or crossposted to any other comp.sys.next groups. news:comp.sys.next.bugs A place to report verifiable bugs in NeXT-supplied software. Material e-mailed to Bug_NeXT@NeXT.COM is not published, so this is a place for the net community find out about problems when they're discovered. This newsgroup has a very poor signal/noise ratio--all too often bozos post stuff here that really belongs someplace else. It rarely makes sense to crosspost between this and other c.s.n.* newsgroups, but individual reports may be germane to certain non-NeXT- specific groups as well. news:comp.sys.next.hardware Discussions about NeXT-label hardware and compatible peripherals, and non-NeXT-produced hardware (e.g. Intel) that is compatible with NEXTSTEP. In most cases, questions about Intel hardware are better asked in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware. Questions about SCSI devices belong in comp.periphs.scsi. Anything you post here by definition doesn't belong anywhere else in c.s.n.*--i.e. no crossposting!!! news:comp.sys.next.programmer Questions and discussions of interest to NEXTSTEP programmers. This is primarily a forum for advanced technical material. Generic UNIX questions belong elsewhere (comp.unix.questions), although specific questions about NeXT's implementation or porting issues are appropriate here. Note that there are several other more "horizontal" newsgroups (comp.lang.objective-c, comp.lang.postscript, comp.os.mach, comp.protocols.tcp-ip, etc.) that may also be of interest. news:comp.sys.next.software This is a place to talk about [third party] software products that run on NEXTSTEP systems. news:comp.sys.next.sysadmin Stuff relating to NeXT system administration issues; in rare cases this will spill over into .programmer or .software. Related Newsgroups ================== news:comp.soft-sys.nextstep Like comp.sys.next.software and comp.sys.next.misc combined. Exists because NeXT is a software-only company now, and comp.soft-sys is for discussion of software systems with scope similar to NEXTSTEP. news:comp.lang.objective-c Technical talk about the Objective-C language. Implemetations discussed include NeXT, Gnu, Stepstone, etc. news:comp.object Technical talk about OOP in general. Lots of C++ discussion, but NeXT and Objective-C get quite a bit of attention. At times gets almost philosophical about objects, but then again OOP allows one to be a programmer/philosopher. (The original comp.sys.next no longer exists--do not attempt to post to it.) This system allows you to request online technical documents, drivers, and other software, which are then sent to you automatically. Most go out in less than 24 hours. Postings that require editing because they do not contain information in a useable format, or have already been posted to other comp.sys.next.* groups may be delayed, or returned to you. If your posting is rejected, I'll try and make suggestions about what should be changed where possible. Obviously off charter messages (spams, open-letters, etc) may not get a response. Content Guidelines ================== Try to keep submissions short and concise (80-100 lines max). Include full instructions on contacting you (where applicable) All Postings e-mail address, telephone (optional) Press Release toll-free voice phone, toll-free fax, voice phone, fax phone mailing address,info@blahblah.com,retail price, educational price availability Software available ftp site full path to file IN URL FORMAT supported CPU's for binary distributions, OS version requirements Meeting Announcements location of meeting, time of meeting, speakers expected Signatures will be deleted automatically, so please don't rely on your .sig for the contact information Please double check all information you are posting for accuracy. If you are announcing software available by FTP, make sure the copy on the archive site is good. Announcement of Product Sales ============================= This is an area of announcement that has caused me terrible grief in the past. The policy is tilted towards the ISV, which has worked out well in the past. Posts that announce sales of products that you are DIRECTLY involved in the development of are OK. Posts from companies trying to sell other products are evaluated on an individual basis. Time Sensitive Announcements ============================ Many times an announcement should coincide with a specific date. Unfortunately, that can be the worst time for you to get access to your internet connection to send the announcements to comp.sys.next.announce. In order to make comp.sys.next.announce as timely as possible, I will accept "post-dated" announcements for release on a specific future date. All information will be kept confidential until the requested release date, and NDAs will be signed where required to ensure this. Hopefully this will make these announcements arrive at users sites as quickly as if you posted them directly to comp.sys.next.whatever. Submissions can be sent to next-announce@digifix.com. Thanks to the amazing work of Tomas Hurka, we have completed a driver for the AdB Digital Multiwav Pro and Multiwav Pro-18 cards. OVERVIEW: Multi!Wav Adapter device driver lets you take advantage of the following adapters: Manufacturer Adapter PC Bus AdB Corp. Multi!Wav Digital PRO ISA AdB Corp. Multi!Wav Digital PRO18 ISA These Multi!Wav ISA cards provide AES/EBU, SPDIF, and TOSLINK input/output to your NeXTStep Intel machine. The Pro-18 card adds an 18 bit digital to analog converter for monitoring. For more information about AdB sound cards see the AdB www home page at http://www.adbdigital.com. Driver supports 32000,44100 and 48000 Hz sampling rates, 16 bit linear sampling in mono or stereo format. The driver makes the card work like a standard audio card, so special software is not needed for digital tranfers, though I recommend Bernhard Scholz's excellent SASound.app for recording. The driver is robust, and provides much better playback that what you might be used to from the Microsoft Sound System, SoundBlaster, or Pro Audio Spectrum. Harvard Computer Music Center are currently using the cards to do direct to DAT transfers, and with Lexicon MXP1s for digital reverberation without leaving the digital realm. They're proven to be a remarkable improvement over our Microsoft Sound System Cards. COPYING: The Multi!Wav adapter device driver is shareware. You can freely distribute without changing or removing any parts of the package. If you found the driver reliable, please, register the driver. For more details see document Registration.rtf inside driver package. Release 1.13 notes: 1. This a first public release of the driver. 2. Only Multi!Wav Digital PRO with XLINK XC4003A is supported. Other two versions (XC4004A and XC4003E) of XLINK can be supported on request. 3. Driver does not use IRQ since Multi!Wav card cannot generate one. The result is this log message when the driver is loaded by Mach OS: "MultiWav at dma channels 6 and 7 irq -268415659" This does no harm, just Sound class does not count with the sound driver without IRQ. AVAILABILITY: The driver has been uploaded to ftp.next.peak.org and placed in the /pub/next/submissions directory. Driver should be moved to the /pub/next/drivers/sound directory. Siegert, frank@this.net Frank M. Siegert, chief hacker of Area 51 today announced the availability of version 2 of the Minimal Media Player for NEXTSTEP/Intel and OpenStep/Mach on Intel. Minimal Media Player (or MMP in short) is a sound player which can play MPEG I Layer 1, Layer 2 and Layer 3, MIDI, MOD and plain SND files on your local machine or on any NeXT system in your local network. MMP does not need special hardware as all sound file types are 'rendered' to audio data before pumped into your soundcard. It can handle GUS compatible MIDI sound patch files (you can add your own). MMP is a shell for the underlying programs: - 'mpg123' by Michael Hipp, which does the MPEG rendering - 'timidity' by Tuukka Toivonen, which does the MIDI rendering - 'tracker' by Marc Espie, which does the MOD rendering MMP is free for any private or research purpose. Please note the usage guidelines in the application info panel before running the software. As usual you are running at your own risk. PREREQUISITES: You'll need a NeXTSTEP/Intel System (3.3 or OpenStep, untested on 3.1 and 3.2), a soundcard that can handle 16 Bit, 44.1 kHz, Stereo and a fast CPU (at least an AMD 486/133 MHz, Pentium 133 recommended). Maybe a later version will support SPARC and HPPA but the older NeXT m68k hardware is way too slow, sorry. AVAILABILITY: At the moment MMP2.I.b.tar.gz is in the submissions directory on next-ftp.peak.org. It will find its way to the audio player directory and the other NeXT sites in the world in the next days.

From: mhpower@mit.edu (Matt Power) Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce,news.software.nntp,comp.security.unix Subject: IMPORTANT: (updated) Security problem with ucbmail when used with INN news server Date: 16 Apr 1997 20:23:47 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <5j3cgj$16m$1@news.digifix.com> I've found a new security problem with the ucbmail program when used with any version of the INN news server. Please note that this new problem is completely unrelated to the one addressed by the April 4 CERT advisory (ftp://ftp.cert.org/pub/cert_advisories/CA-97.08.innd). Even if you are running INN 1.5.1 and have read and acted on that advisory, your news server may still process certain control messages in a way that allows execution of arbitrary commands by remote users. The problem only affects specific versions of the ucbmail program. The ucbmail behavior that results in the vulnerability has been confirmed only for NEXTSTEP 3.3, NEXTSTEP 3.2, and BSD 4.3 (admittedly it's unlikely that many sites are using BSD 4.3 on their news server). Additionally, on these systems, the vulnerability becomes exploitable if INN's innshellvars file sets the variable MAILCMD to either /usr/ucb/Mail or /usr/ucb/mail. (This is a very common setting.) I think that ISC plans to remove this vulnerability in the next INN release by eliminating INN's dependency on the ucbmail program, or by some other major change to how control messages are processed. In the meantime, those whose news-server machines are currently vulnerable may wish to apply the patch included at the end of this message. This patch is an entirely unsupported temporary workaround. However, I would recommend that anyone using INN on NEXTSTEP apply this patch. I don't know of any harm that would be caused by applying this patch on other platforms, but it hasn't yet been tested on other platforms. The intent of the patch is to prevent any ~ characters from being included in the input that INN's shell scripts present to the ucbmail program. From: uli@tallowcross.uni-frankfurt.de Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: PRESS RELEASE: NEXTTOYOU wants your MailTIFFs Date: 16 Apr 1997 03:10:34 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <5j1fva$a22$1@news.digifix.com> NEXTTOYOU encourages all NEXTSTEP users to submit their MailTIFFs to the NEXTTOYOU MailTIFFs database NEXTTOYOU strongly encourages everybody in the NEXTSTEP community to join its global MailTIFFs database and submit a MailTIFF of her/himself. Your MailTIFF should have a size of 64 x 64 pixel and be LZW compressed. Name it user@address.tiff (where user@address is your email address) and send it via NeXTMail to MailTIFFs@nexttoyou.de If you write from more than one email address, you should also include a so-called aliases file which lists your alternative email addresses. The file must be a plain ASCII file named user@address.aliases (where user@address is exactly the same email address you used to name your MailTIFF). In this file, write your alternative email addresses, one each line, each line finished by Return. If you use no-spam fake addresses in usenet (e.g. user@address.NOSPAM), please remember to include these addresses also as aliases. There is *no* risk for you in doing so, but it allows newsreaders to make use of the MailTIFFS database, too. An example would be: SteveJobs@next.com.tiff SteveJobs@next.com.aliases --> this is an ASCII file including the lines: SteveJobs@advisory.apple.com Steve@microsoft.haters.net SteveJobs@next.com.NOSPAM SteveJobs@advisory.apple.com.NOSPAM Steve@microsoft.haters.net.NOSPAM If you want to update your picture, just send a new MailTIFF of *exactly the same name* to MailTIFFs@nexttoyou.de. It will automatically replace the old one in all people's MailTIFFs databases. If your mail address changes, just send a new aliases file of *exactly the same name* to MailTIFFs@nexttoyou.de. The new aliases it contains will automatically be added to all people's aliases files. The NEXTTOYOU MailTIFFs database consists of a set of programs to be installed on your computer and a global MailTIFFs server provided by NEXTTOYOU. It allows you to automatically administrate MailTIFFs from internet users and get their pictures displayed in Mail.app as well as newsreaders prepared for this mechanism. You can find the programs needed at ftp://ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de/pub/NeXT/misc/NEXTTOYOU/97.1-Fruehjahr/ MailTIFF.database/MailTIFF.database.1.0.1.b.NIHS.tar.gz NEXTTOYOU is a German NEXTSTEP magazine published by WiNG (Wiesbaden NEXTSTEP Group) to provide the NEXTSTEP community with a platform both for neophytes and professionals. From: cmh@tracer.consecol.org (Colin Henein) Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: SkeyCalc v1.0 Released Date: 16 Apr 1997 06:29:23 GMT Organization: Journal of Conservation Ecology Message-ID: <5j1rk3$dpj$1@news.digifix.com> After much procrastination, I've cleaned up the last few details in my S/Key calculator. SkeyCalc is a graphical S/Key calculator for NEXTSTEP. This program was developed under NEXTSTEP 3.3, but should run under OpenStep as well. SkeyCalc is free to use. A Quad-Fat binary (Next, Intel, HP and Sparc) is provided. The calculator provides MD4 and MD5 S/Key responses. It runs both as an application and as a service. For more information you can visit the web page at: http://www.consecol.org/~cmh/SkeyCalc/ I suggest that you download the rtf README file from this website for more information.

From: Serge Thill <serge.thill@coctel.lu> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: New Haven 0.92 Date: 24 Apr 1997 05:01:54 GMT Organization: Digital Fix Development Message-ID: <5jmpg2$3ds$1@news.digifix.com> New Haven 0.92 -- First public BETA release A toolkit to create and operate complex stimuli environments for simulations The operative part provides interactive and simultaneous management of several independant high bandwidth input systems running on a network of computers; the information transmitted within this context consists of dynamic data patterns generated on a set of two dimensional surfaces, each of which is chosen from a range of available topologies. The creative part of New Haven is made of a Nextstep library that helps design these input generators and that describes the interaction protocols between input system, simulation system and the management application. This library also provides specialized support for designing cellular automata, who can be then used as stimuli generators. New Haven has grown out of difficulties to stay in control of my neural net simulations. A (non-exhaustive) list of these include: - make concurrent processes work together - ... over computer boundaries - interactive manipulation of system parameters - running several simulations simultaneously - long execution times and persistance - interactive recombination of system components. - keep track of system evolution New Haven is an attempt to throw these and more into a graphical user interface that avoids the mostly negative stress involved with dealing with these problems, and thus brings more fun and creativity into experimentation through managability. It allows to graphically set up and assist simulation systems with complex input paths without becoming involved in the unromantic work of writing the code that makes these components interact. You can focus the attention to the actual input component functionality and are provided with construction material for dynamic and spatially distributed stimuli structures. It provides a standard means of interaction for all applications that conform to New Haven, as well as a graphical event driven interface application that organizes this interaction and offers a set of management features which can be used by these applications. A list with all the features of New Haven does not fit into this place, so please refer to the README.rtf file and to the help panel of the management application for this information. The package contains several example applications and their sources, Intel binaries for the management application, and Intel binaries plus documentation for the library. New Haven is shareware, and information about source code licenses for the library and the management application is available upon registration. Registration also remains valid for future releases. This software has been developed under Nextstep 3.2 and should require at least 3.0 to run. It is still in BETA testing. Therefore it runs at present only on Intel CPUs. You are invited to play with it and post me your reactions (and/or bug reports ;-) Serge Thill -- Email: serge.thill@coctel.lu --- 21 april 1997. WWW site ============================ http://www.next.com comp.sys.next.* newsgroups ========================== news:comp.sys.next.advocacy This is the "why NEXTSTEP is better (or worse) than anything else in the known universe" forum. It was created specifically to divert lengthy flame wars from .misc. news:comp.sys.next.announce Announcements of general interest to the NeXT community (new products, FTP submissions, user group meetings, commercial announcements etc.) This is a moderated newsgroup, meaning that you can't post to it directly. This isn't the place to buy or sell used NeXTs--that's what .marketplace is for. news:comp.sys.next.marketplace NeXT stuff for sale/wanted. Material posted here must not be crossposted to any other c.s.n.* newsgroup, but may be crossposted to misc.forsale.computers.workstation or appropriate regional newsgroups. news:comp.sys.next.misc For stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else. (The original comp.sys.next no longer exists--do not attempt to post to it.) Exception to the crossposting restrictions: announcements of usenet RFDs or CFVs, when made by the news.announce.newgroups moderator, may be simultaneously crossposted to all c.s.n.* newsgroups. From: Tom Hageman <tom@basil.icce.rug.nl> Newsgroups: comp.sys.next.announce Subject: SUBMISSION: Carl Edman's mailapp-utilities, version 1.8 Date: 30 Apr 1997 03:15:32 GMT Organization: Warty Wolfs Message-ID: <5k6dgk$rlk$1@news.digifix.com> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- This is a maintenance release of Carl Edman's mailapp-utilities. These are some command line tools useful in conjunction with Mail.app. `Nextmail' has a command line interface similar to UCB mail but instead of sending the letter it puts it in a Mail.app compose window. `Appnmail' appends messages to the end of Mail.app mailboxes while taking care to properly handle locks, NeXT mail and the table of contents. `Compactmail' compacts Mail.app mailboxes just like the Compact menu item does. In addition, there is also a small utility called `listmail' which lists Mail.app table_of_contents. What's new: * Fixed mbox-locking race condition that caused appnmail to fail to deliver messages in rare circumstances (reported by Tim Luoma <luomat@peak.org>). * Print informational message when starting to wait for mbox lock. * Compactmail bugfix: Mail.app marks some deleted messages with `D', which wasn't understood by compactmail. * Add `-NXHost host' option to nextmail. This contacts Mail.app on the specified host. * "make install" now will _not_ try to recompile the executables; this is done to make installation of the precompiled executables easier. Use "make all install" instead if you want to compile and install in one fell swoop (generally a bad idea anyway:-p) Source code and quad-fat executables are included. See the accompanying README file for more information.
