The file "TransferDemo.tar" contains a demonstration version of
Pinnacle Transfer. This demo version will allow you to connect to
a remote computer and browse the contents of your mailboxes (new
and NeXTmail) as well as the remote filesystem. Transfer of files
and e-mail messages to the local computer are disabled.
It is currently on cs.orst.edu in

Pinnacle Transfer(TM) v1.0
Introduction
------------
Pinnacle Transfer is a connectivity solution that provides a way
to connect computers via modem and share electronic mail, files
and output from remote command execution.
Transfer's many features allow you to connect a stand-alone machine
to a remote server and perform actions as if you were at the remote
machine. This includes:
- reading your electronic mail on the server
- sending outgoing mail to users accessible by the
remote server
- copying files from the remote server
- executing commands on the remote server and viewing
the output on the local machine
All you need to use Transfer is a NEXTSTEP computer with a modem
and an account on another machine that you can use as a mail, file
and remote command server.
Electronic Mail
---------------
Transfer provides the following functions to help you access
electronic mail messages stored on a remote machine:
- header listing of newly received mail messages
- listing of NeXTmail mailboxes
- header listings of messages residing in NeXTmail mailboxes
- selective retrieval of mail messages (new or in
NeXTmail mailboxes)
- sending of outgoing mail composed on the local machine
- deletion of messages
Mail Message Listing and Retrieval
Transfer provides a listing of the new mail messages you
have received on a remote server when you establish a
connection. Each message is listed in a format very similar
to that found in the NEXTSTEP Mail application, including
information such as:
- the date the message was received
- the size of the message
- the sender of the message
- the message subject
- content type (NeXTmail format, ascii mail)
- message status (unread, read)
You can select items from the message listing and have them
transferred to the local machine. Once a message is received
on the local machine, it appears as a new message in Mail.app
(or any of the standard UNIX mail readers).
Sending Messages
Transfer works along with the NEXTSTEP Mail application to
allow you to compose messages on the local machine and have
them sent to the remote server. This is done transparently
- all you need do is compose messages in Mail.app and press
``Deliver''. Transfer does the work of accumulating these
messages and forwarding them to the remote server when you
connect.
Message Deletion
Transfer also allows you to delete incoming messages. This
is useful for freeing up disk space on the remote server
once you have transferred messages to the local machine.
File Access
-----------
Transfer provides a familiar drag-and-drop interface to sharing
files between the remote server and the local machine. The remote
file system is displayed in a browser similar to the one found in
the NEXTSTEP Workspace Manager. Files and folders can be copied
from the remote system and dragged from Transfer to another NEXTSTEP
application such as Workspace Manager.
Command Execution
-----------------
The command execution module allows you to type a command and have
it executed on the remote server. Output generated by the command
will be sent back to the local machine and displayed in a text
window. This output can be copied from Transfer and pasted into
any other NEXTSTEP application.
Customization
-------------
Transfer was designed to be extended to provide custom functionality
such as interfacing to databases or custom applications residing
on a NEXTSTEP or UNIX server. Contact Pinnacle Research if you
are interested in custom extensions to Transfer to meet your specific
needs.
Architecture Independence
-------------------------
The remote server portion of the Transfer system is portable to
UNIX environments other than NEXTSTEP. This architecture independence
of the Transfer server allows NEXTSTEP users to enjoy the benefits
of Transfer, even if the remote machine they connect to is not
running NEXTSTEP. Contact Pinnacle Research, Inc. for information
on obtaining Transfer servers for other UNIX environments.
Multi-Architecture Support
--------------------------
The standard release version of Transfer can be run on the following
system configurations:
NeXT hardware running NEXTSTEP 3.0 or greater
iNTEL hardware running NEXTSTEP 3.1 or greater
Pricing and Availability
------------------------
Pinnacle Transfer is priced at $249. Educational, student and bulk
purchase discounts are available, contact Pinnacle Research for
more information. Transfer is scheduled to ship on October 1,
1993. To order Transfer, send a check, money-order or
