I'm planning on buying an 8/105, after which I intend to purchase a 3rd-party 3.5" drive to replace the 105. I need some input on what drives are available. The drive should give at least 400MB formatted and (of course) I should be able to boot from it. Ideally, it shouldn't cost more than $1300. Is there such a drive out there? -alan -alanlb@csgrad.cs.vt.edu

Although, I will give it credit for being fast. At the time, my only other choice was a Quantum drive (the Pro-425). I have been pretty happy with it and had no problems. I just put it in a temporary enclosure, built an extended system on it, and swapped it with my internal drive. Works great. I can hear it seek, though this is much better than having it whine. These days I'm waiting for a decent 3.5" 1 Gig drive. You'd be suprised how quickly you will eat up 425 megs :-) -Brian

This is a 520MB (formatted 512byte/sectors) 3.5" half-height. The specs on this drive are quite good. 12ms average access, 3.0MB/s asynch, 4.8MB/s synch, SCSI-2 interface, 4400 rpm spindle, 240kB read-ahead cache. The drive is quieter than the Quantum 105 internal. It is also noticeably faster for day-to-day work (probably due to the larger on-board cache). Doing the "standard" sequential disk(8) low level read, the drive maintains over 1.0MB/s transfer rate. Now if there was a real benchmark available, I would certainly be interested in posting the results. Unfortunately, I doubt it will fit inside the NeXTstation. If you're thinking about buying a 660MB drive, take a look at the 2624. It costs the same as the Fujitsu 2263, but it's 520MB and fast-fast-fast-quiet-quiet-quiet. (No doubt other vendors will introduce 3.5" drives with the same or better performance in the near future though.) Stuart
