I have studied the NeXT computer line and have decided to order a color NeXTDimension. I have put together three purchase plans and would like some feedback/evaluation. I understand the minimum memory configuration delivered with color stations is 12 Mb. However, these are delivered as 2 X 4Mb SIMMS and 4 X 1 Mb SIMMS and and that the 4 X 1 Mb SIMMS have no salvage value. Therefore, I'm considering the 16 Mb 4 X 4 Mb SIMMS configuration to be minimal. Plan A - the third party solution Purchase minimal system (16Mb/105Mb). Do not purchase NeXT monitor but pick up high quality third party monitor (see monitor questions below). Remove and sell 105Mb disk. Buy large internal disk and install extended software release 2.0. Buy additional third party memory. Plan B - the "no hassle" third party solution Purchase minimal system (16Mb/105Mb) with a 21" NeXT color monitor. Purchase a large *external* third party disk and configure the internal disk as a swap device. Buy additional third party memory. Plan C - the NeXT solution Purchase larger system (16Mb/400Mb) with a 21" NeXT color monitor. Buy additional third party memory. Upgrade rest of system later. I am leaning towards Plan B. Additional questions 1. Memory - I understand there is *one* supplier of NeXT color memory, South Coast Eletronics. Correct? Has anyone ordered from them? Can you install them yourself with out voiding the waranty? If not, will the NeXT service rep. install them? How long does delivery take? 2. Monitors - Has anyone actually connected a third party monitor? I understand you need a custom cabling. Where do you get a cable? What is the best monitor (Sony?), why, who sells them, and what's the delivery time? Was this worth the additional effort? 3. Furniture - does anyone sell furniture tailored to the NeXT? Who, what delivery time, etc.? Any furniture vendor recommendation welcome. 4. Waranty - is it worth preserving? what's covered? Thank you to those who supported my previous request for information.
