I have the following problem: When I turn on my color NeXTstation in the morning - no UPS yet, so I turn off at night - it goes through the normal starup procedure and then just keeps going on displaying the message box: "Loading Disk" - forever! I can power off or go into the monitor and halt, power off and start again, and everything loads just fine. If I turn off the computer and AC power during the day for some minutes or so and start again I am still ok. Only the overnight situation causes the machine to hang. I do not know how to show the console during loading so I don't know what is really happening. This has happened for two mornings now. The day before I started having problems, I tried to install SoftPC and futzed around with permissions on /dev/rfd0b to get the floppy working with SoftPC. Before I finally called Insignia to find out that I needed to change permissions of rfd0b, I think I messed it up somehow as it has a modification date from that afternoon. My impression is that the system is having trouble with the floppy upon startup and hanging due to a damaged rfd0b but I really don't know. NeXT and DOS floppies mount just fine as long as the computer is running. Can anyone help with this problem - I am really very worried and have few people in this area to turn to. (By the way, thanks to all those who helped with a previous problem - Dig. Lib.'s problem with man indexes!) Thomas J. Herbert University of Miami therbert@umiami.ir.miami.edu (p.s. - If I need a new rfd0b, could someone send it to me - uuencoded to therbert@miavax.ir.miami.edu? I really do not understand /dev files as they seem to be something special - 0k files which really are synonyms for the device?)
