This is a very powerful way of modifying and customizing system behavior. Does anyone have a list of these important variables for the Workspace, etc? If not, I volunteer to make a compendium of these handy things and publish them here on the net as soon as we got a few. a couple of years ago i put together a gdb hack that can be used to determine all the default variables read by a given application, and posted it here a couple of times. i believe it's now in the FAQ. i expect it would take a little cleverness to apply it to Workspace, however...

I applied it to /usr/lib/NextStep/Workspace.app/Workspace under 2.0. The workspace failed to launch, but not before giving the following output. What the names mean is another matter...
