Well, its fixed now, although I have NO idea why. All I did was reboot the machine! Actually, the whole rebooting process was a little weird. My computer started making very strange noises last night; higher pitched and much louder than normal... loud enough to wake me up!! (Okay, so the computer is in my bedroom and I'm a bit of a light sleeper, but still!) I listened for a minute or so and then decided to power it down. This morning when I rebooted not only was the sound problem fixed, but I had an extra 3.3MB on my HD! No, the swapfile size did not change. No, there was nothing to be recycled. Strange stuff - any explanations? Neal fowler@math.berkeley.edu

You know, the little elves that come in the middle of the night and cobble together all the shoes they can for the poor old shoemaker. Maybe there is something to all this Middle Earth fantasy stuff after all.
