Date: Sun 16-Dec-1991 21:16:11 From: asm@eecg.toronto.edu (Anees Munshi) Subject: Wanted: Info on SoftPC I'm deciding whether or not to buy SoftPC, so I'd like some feedback from those out there who use it. I'm only interested in running a few, somewhat specialized programs; that is, I don't have a large collection of PC software that would benefit from being able to be run on a NeXT. Hence, I am probably not the typical SoftPC customer. What are your general impressions about SoftPC -- about its robustness, quality of implementation, bugs, speed, etc.? How does it handle common devices such as serial ports, mice, etc. If I run a program that works with a Logitech serial mouse (not under MS Windows), will the NeXT mouse work OK? About PostScript printer, will it work with the NeXT printer? If you have used Orcad Schematic Capture or Orcad Digital Simulator under SoftPC on the NeXT I would very much like to hear from you (as this is one of my intended applications). Also, if you use Quicken 4.0 (the accounting program) under SoftPC, I'd like to hear from you. Thank you for your time and consideration. Actually I think you are the typical customer, I bought my copy for the same reason. >What are your general impressions about SoftPC -- about its >robustness, quality of implementation, bugs, speed, etc.? About >printing: if I have a PC program that will work with a serial >PostScript printer, will it work with the NeXT printer? It's a very solid program and I haven't had any crashes of SoftPC in the 3 months I've owned it. Real intensive graphics are a bit slow but text based applications are better than your typical low end PC. I like it for what it does. I haven't done any printing or used a mouse. I have Orcad but still use my 386 for that. I have a PC and SoftPC. I still have to use my PC for MIDI sequencing since there is no sequencer available for the NeXT. > >If you have used Orcad Schematic Capture or Orcad Digital >Simulator under SoftPC on the NeXT I would very much like to >hear from you (as this is one of my intended applications). >Also, if you use Quicken 4.0 (the accounting program) under >SoftPC, I'd like to hear from you.
