So, I'm about to get a laser printer; either a NeXT or a third-party one. Does anyone have a lightly used NeXt laser printer (s)he is willing to sell? If not, should I buy a NeXT laserprinter now (and wait very patiently for the Computer Emporium to get it in), wait until after the NeXT expo in January or buy a new or used third-party PostScript printer? A brand new NEC SilentWriter II/90 costs $1,298, which is a bit less than what a NeXT laserprinter w/ toner and paper tray costs *WITH* educational discount.

It is true that there are some third party laser printers in the same price range, but they are 300dpi, not 400. NeXT's printer is a great deal. I doubt that it will change either in performance or in price at EXPO. M Carling

I looked into the third party printer options and decided to get a NeXT printer for the following reasons. 1. $1333 educational price - $100 = $1233 until Jan. 31, 1992 2. 400 DPI which is better than any other low cost solution. 3. Speed. any other printer will be attached to the serial port and *WILL* be slower. 4. Don't need to worry about version of Postscript because if a new version comes out it will probably be rolled in to the next OS release. I haven't seen a printer yet that you could upgrade, except a printer that uses a Postcript cart. 5. It's black and matches the computer. > >Does anyone have a lightly used NeXt laser printer (s)he is willing to >sell? My total price for the printer last week incl. Ca. tax was $1334. Add another $70 for the toner and you get a little over $1400. Also I have one complaint. Why is NeXT the only company that does not provide a toner cart. with the printer? A NeXT printer is $1400 not the $1300 they claim because you still need toner to operate.

Maybe because they know you can get toner cheaper on the open market (If that is the case, the why don't they let us by 0mb slabs). Anyway. there is a part number for toner, N2001, which lists at $125. At discount, this is over $80, and we get our toner at $60-70 dollars, depending what the Chicago Mercantile toner futures are doing that day. For most accounting environments, not paying for toner up front is a good thing. Toner is a 'consumable', hence an operating expense, whereas the printer is an asset, therefore a capital investment. Often times, capital budgets are looked at very carefully, whereas expense bugdets are usually hand-waved to the check-writer. In my last large order, this saved me enough to get copies of Improv and FrameMaker, and the toner was ordered with the paper. Same thing with Maintenance costs. You may say this ain't reality, but once you lived in this rathole long enough, this becomes reality... (We sometimes lease stuff for up to a year, like dumb terminals, because lease items are expense items. We then 'buy' them in the next capital funding cycle. Dumb dollar wise, but we get our work done.) - Geoff (all opinions my own). --------------------------------------------------------------- Geoffrey Brunkhorst brunkhorst@Mayo.edu Research Computing Facility (507) 284-1805 Mayo Foundation, Rochester MN, 55905 USA fax (507) 284-5231

I wonder if my school store just had a bunch lying around and decided to give me one :)

I think all printer manufacturers should be required to sell their new printers with rechargeable toner cartridges. <off the soap box> Joe
