I am not exactly sure how he did it, but it worked. Apparently he cut the cable & soldered a new one on. He also split it so he could still hook it up to the Nintendo. He'll be back in about a week, so you can ask him. However, I think he got the instructions on how to do this off of the net, so someone else out there probably knows how to do this.
