On color machines, more bits are used to specify the alpha, either 4 or 8 depending on the hardware capabilities. Eric Ly

Or even R+G+B+A for color systems, since some 16-bit, non-transparency color schemes use 5+6+5+0 bits per pixel. I think this is because the human eye is more sensitive in the green-ish area of the spectrum.
