If you are like me, about to buy (or already own) a NeXTstation because you don't have some huge pile of cash to fund a loaded NeXTcube, then check this out! The big problem was that if you wanted a large amount of internal storage, you had to get a cube which was an extra $2,000. With no solution in site I decided to bite the bullet and get a monochrome NeXTstation. A friend suggested that I get the 4,995 station and get 3rd party memory and drives (since NeXT makes quite a profit on memory and drives [i.e. $800 of memory for 2,995]). In my quest for a good drive buy, I came across this drive from Micropolis. After checking into it and comparing against other drives, this drive is really something!!! According to the data sheet, is should fit into a NeXTstation. Some of you may recall my posting regarding noise levels of drives. According to the data sheets this drive is as quiet as the 105 Quantum (which most seem to think is quiet ~35db). However, the drive isn't available until the end of this year. Micropolis Sales told me that engineering samples for ~$2000 will start shipping Sept. The middle of October is when they start full production and will sell for <$1000 (prob. $999.95). So for 1/2 the price of getting a 340MB instead of a 105MB, you get 1GB + 105MB. You can get the 105 a case, power supply, & cable and use it as a portable hard disk (for taking your work home [or home to work]). So if you're like me an want a sh_tload of disk space, but have little cash, then this is for you. The only thing is that you have to suffer until October or November with the system you buy. Either that or wait until October to buy. ------------- Steve Hoffman All opinions are my own, big corporations have none.
