Date: Sun 07-Jul-1991 16:28:32 From: kaul@bionette.cgrb.orst.edu (Lothar Kaul) Subject: cs.orst.edu archive notices This note has two purposes. One is to make a request of submitters to the archive so I (the NeXT archive administrator) can provide the best possible service. The other is to announce a new directory on cs.orst.edu. For submitters. When you submit a file, please include, preferably as part of the tar file, a README, preferably in ASCII format (definitely not in WriteNow format). The README should include: a short description of the submission for inclusion in the INDEX the author's email addr, in case the file doesn't come out OK installation instructions any special notes A README makes it easier for newcomers to NeXT's to install programs and figure out what they do. Also it makes it easier for me to figure out how to organize submissions. Please send any comments and suggestions concerning the NeXT archives to next-ftp@cs.orst.edu, instead of to me directly. As to the new directory. Bryce Jasmer thinks it would be a good idea to have a directory set up which contains the tiff's of people's faces, so NeXT users could see what their favorite net personalities look like. I've set up a directory in the cs.orst.edu archive: pub/next/misc/people-tiffs. As I get submissions, I'll put people's faces there. Bryce has a few words to say about those tiffs: TIFFs should be 64x64 and can be any depth (at least 8 bits/pixel is recommended), color is fine, b/w is fine. The file name should be your mailing address with '@' and '!' replaced with '.' and a .tiff tacked on the end. As you can see with my tiff: "bryce_jasmer.next.com.tiff". The filename is rather important for figuring out who the person is. You might be wondering about the replacement scheme for '@' and '!' because mail keeps the '@' and '!' in the filename. I can't tell you why so you'll just have to take my word for the new naming scheme. Lothar Kaul
