This is NeXT-Optical-Disk-Update in view mode; [Up]
Date: Sun 22-Jan-1991 10:05:03 From: turing@saturn.ucsc.edu (Brad Gulko) Subject: NeXT Optical Disk Update Due to several recent messages from people indicating that they are having trouble obtaining NeXT compatible optical disks, I am posting this in- formation. I am sorry if this is repetitions to some. On December 14, I ordered a large quantity of NeXT optical disks from an authorized NeXT distributor (guess who....) in the hopes of obtaining a quantity discount. They promised a delivery date of December 23 +/- a few days for the Christmas rush. On December 26, this delivery date was changed to Janu- ary 7 (does this sound familiar?) and on January 8'th the delivery date was changed to March 31. In hopes of actually obtaining disks before the end of the millennium, I called Cannon and played telephone tag until I found that the NeXT optical disks are made under exclusive contract for NeXT and they are not getting many from Cannon. Furthermore, the agent in charge of the NeXT account is not part of the regular Cannon optical disk group and is current unreach- able. However, Cannon indicated that they had a double sided optical disk that was compatible with the NeXT and was available in arbitrarily large quan- tities immediately. I ordered one and tested it and it worked just fine. Just unmount the current side, eject the disk, flip it over and reinsert it for an additional 256 Meg of data storage. While the price for these disks was somewhat higher then the original student discount price for disks ($ 50 per disk), it was significantly less ex- pensive then the "new and improved" price for the disks. As a result I am dis- tributing these double sided disks as inexpensively as I can manage as a ser- vice to the NeXT community. 2 Sided disk prices (512 Meg per disk) Available Now (less then 1 week processing time) Quantity Price @ -------------------------------- 1-4 $172 ( sales tax for CA residents ) 5-9 $169 ( is NOT included and is typically ) 10+ $160 ( 6 - 7 % ) --------------------------------- + shipping costs depending on what type of shipping you want, all disks are unopened and warranted for 90 days. If there is any problem with the disks within the warranty period, re- turn the disk(s) to me and I'll replace them immediately if I have any in stock. If not, I will order a replacement along with my next shipment. I'll deal with getting new ones from the manufacturer.
