Date: Sun 15-Feb-1991 07:40:01 From: zimmer@calvin.stanford.edu (Andrew Zimmerman) Subject: cables, tar cables - NeXT connection does have cables for the 68040 available for $19. Unfortunately, these cables are 'prototypes' and are not black. But, if you need a cable, and don't want to waste time making one, they were able to ship them next day. tar - Does the man page for tar and tar actually match on the NeXT, or did NeXT 'fix' tar? :-) During the process of bringing 2.0 standard up to 2.0 extended, I was bit by the 100 char limit on pathnames in tar on a DECstation 3100. It seemed that the NeXT was able to handle it pretty well though. (Why was I doing the tar on a DECstation? Why was rrestore on my NeXT thinking my NFS disk was read only? Why do people want their NeXT cables and mouse pads to be black? What is the meaning of life? Why do I have so many unaswered questions?) A more serious question, what is the difference between the 'Standard' Webster Dictionary and the 'Extended' Webster Dictionary? I know about the pictures, but there is also a difference in the dictionary file (.nxfd extension or something) One is called Compact, the other is not. How does Webster know which to use? Although I have had a couple of Apps core dump, I must say that NeXT has done a nice job on the OS. Very solid. Setting up for use on a net is still not trivial, but much easier then other unixes. The manuals explain things pretty well, and give useful examples. Andrew zimmer@calvin.stanford.edu PS. I have recieved great service from NeXT connection, Pencom, and Lighthouse.
