Subject: NeXT Upgrade Questions

I am trying to bring a somewhat sick 030 cube up to current standards.
I know that I need to order the 040 upgrade and the 2.0 software as
a start, but I have a couple of other issues to deal with:

1. The optical drive is broken. I am considering the idea of replacing
   it, especially since I probably won't be able to install the 
   new software without it. As I understand it, the old cubes had a
	 problem with the fan drawing dust through the OD causing it to fail.
	 How can I tell if my machine has this problem? If I buy a new OD,
	 what can I do to ensure that the problem will not reoccur? As
	 an alternative, can I get rid of the OD and install a floppy
	 drive instead?

2. We have thick ethernet cabling. Does anyone know how to connect
	 a cube to thick ethernet? Has anyone heard of a plug-in board that 
	 provides a thick ethernet connector?
