My NeXT fails to receive mail sent to it by its Internet address. I.e. mail ivo@\[128.97.74.50\] from the shell with text generates the following returned-mail: ----- Transcript of session follows ----- Connected to mailhost: >>> HELO next.agsm.ucla.edu <<< 553 next.agsm.ucla.edu host name configuration error 554 ivo@[128.97.74.50]... Service unavailable ----- Unsent message follows ----- Return-Path: <ivo> Received: by next.agsm.ucla.edu (NeXT-1.0 (From Sendmail 5.52)/NeXT-1.0(KJW-19Apr90)) id AA11140; Fri, 11 May 90 14:11:10 PDT Date: Fri, 11 May 90 14:11:10 PDT From: Ivo Welch <ivo> Message-Id: <9005112111.AA11140@next.agsm.ucla.edu> Errors-To: ivo To: ivo@mailhost Interestingly, my computer translates the numerical address to mailhost. (Sending to ivo@mailhost also fails.) Of course, mailhost is defined (in netinfo, too) as 128.97.74.50 mailhost as is 128.97.74.50 next.agsm.ucla.edu Could someone please hint to me what I am doing wrong? Thanks. /ivo ivo@next.agsm.ucla.edu <-- don't use the numerical address!!

I had a domain agsm.ucla.edu in resolv.conf. Why this would make a difference, I am not sure about (maybe it tried to attach it to mailhost, and couldn't find mailhost.agsm.ucla.edu). /ivo welch ivo@next.agsm.ucla.edu
