This is Mathematica,-memory,-1.0 in view mode; [Up]

Date: Sun 20-Sep-1989 22:56:24 From: Unknown Subject: Mathematica, memory, 1.0 I have discovered several unsavory things about Mathematica (1.0 software). For one thing, it handles memory in a very curious fashion. I just finished a big compute (big for mathematica...maple 4.2 did the same thing in a tenth of the time without a groan...I want my mac back??) and logged off the machine. When I got back on, the machine gave me a message to the effect that I had limited space left and should select "destroy deleted files" in utilities (of course this wasn't even highlighted so no soap there). I checked swapfile and found it had grown to 28 meg or so. I had to turn off the power to recover space in ram....WEIRD , no? I have found one thing has improved... the *algorithm failed* notices come up much faster in 1.0 than in 0.9...! But they still happen in all the same places!!! Something to be said for consistency... Advice to NeXT: Dump Wolfram and get Maple or something that actually works without killing the machine. Besides this, I am in love with 1.0. The NeXT in house stuff works good. And yes, I have reported this to WRI...no response except to say that they get the same problem...wow. Bill Smith smithw@byuvax OR smithw@yvax.byu.edu P.S. When will Terminal get scroll bars and full vt100 emulation? >From: ali@polya.Stanford.EDU (Ali T. Ozer)
