Date: Sun 24-Oct-1989 22:47:57 From: Unknown Subject: 40 meg hard drive? I have seen postings on the net about NeXT distributing 40 meg hard drives with new machines to speed up swapping. My brother just bought a cube from MIT, and he hasn't heard a thing, nor does he believe me. So. . . could someone, preferably from NeXT, tell me what is supposed to be going on, i.e. should he get one and how? Thanks very much, Daniel Mark Gessel

I'm currently staring at a release from NEXT. It's titled FOR IMMEDIEATE RELEASE. NeXT introduces news, low-cost network configuration. The contact person is Allison Tomas Allison Thomas Associates (818) 981-1520 They also list the fax, and phone numbers for NeXT, Inc 415 780 3714 (fax) 415 366 0900 (phone) Dated October, 17, 1989 the first paragraph is "ANN ARBOR, Mich., October 17, 1989 -- NeXT, Inc. today announced a new low-cost network user system configured with a 40MB (megabyte) accelerator drive. The computer, which does not include an optical drive, will cost $4,995 for highter education. The announcement was made at Educom's annual meeting here." It later goes on to say "NeXT will also be including the 40MB hard drive in its standalone computer system which sells for $6500 to higher education and developers. In this configuration the NeXT optical drive is used as the startup drive, application drive, and data drive. The 40MB hard disk drive is used as a "swap" drive. Current users of optical disk-only NeXT Computer Systems can add the 40MB hard disk at no charge through NeXT." There is also an announcement about a reduction in the price of the 4MB memory modules and a final paragraph stating that the 40MB drive option will be available November 1, 1989.
