Date: Sun 02-Nov-1989 04:20:06 From: Unknown Subject: gethostbyname bug I wrote a little program to hand out nameservice from our NeXT via telnet. In testing it, I discovered that sending it a long string causes the -lresolv routines to cease running anywhere on the system until the machine is rebooted (h_errno == 0). A test program revealed that this happens passing a 247 character string to gethostbyname(). If I had made this server public, someone would have found the bug for me. :-) The behavior is better, but still bad on a BSD VAX: It dies somewhere above 256 characters, with a trace trap. Name resolution still works on subsequent program runs. Joe Stong jst@cca.ucsf.edu >From: nmk@thyme.Princeton.EDU (Nick Katz)
