Date: Sun 31-Oct-1989 04:07:30 From: Unknown Subject: Serial Printers on the next This is my first posting on the network, so please do not flame me too badly if i blunder. All opinions are mine. I am one of the few students that have actually bought the computer Jobs sent out to academia. Make no mistake, I love my NeXT. No other computer comes close to it. But after spending $7500+ on just the cube itself, I didn't have another $2000+ for a Laser Printer. So I bought an Epson Lx810 with a serial interface. That's where my problem begins. The printer connected ok. I managed to make the cable right (I believe), my breakout box reports normal signals. I can get great printouts in NLQ (no postscript, though, of course). But there is no handshaking. When the printer's buffer is full, it lets down DTR which I connected to pin 2 of Serial B. It also sends out XOFF to the cube via RXD for good luck. Yet the cube keeps on sending out data. (This is all through csh interaction). Why? stty reports that tandem is set. There shouldn't be any reason why the cube refuses to acknowledge the handshake. Anyone got any ideas? - jiro nakamura - ac6y@vax5.cit.cornell.edu ps. thank you in advance! >From: seth@cunixc.cc.columbia.edu (Seth Strumph)
