Date: Sun 09-Nov-1989 19:18:26 From: Unknown Subject: Do I have a Bad Optical Drive??? I have been having lots of trouble with optical disks on my Next lately. The same optical disks work fine on the Next here at school. Both systems are running 1.0. After having an optical crash, workspace says "this disk needs to be initialized", disk label print says "disk has no label". I reformatted the disk on the next at school. While using the disk at home, the disk spins down and up many times. The messages in /private/adm/messages write respin (tracking servo failure) and some block numbers. write respin (invalid instruction???) and the same block numbers. repeat many times. My question is, Do I have one of the bad drives that were going around? Can someone give me a range of drives that had this problem so I can find out without hauling my computer back to caltech? Thanks in advance. Robert >From: massimo@jungfrau.UUCP (Massimo Arnoldi)
